Isn't the point of giving him a long term deal instead of just franchising him to help with our cap space ?
We could give him a 5/75 or 6/90 with 12 counting against the cap this year and 18 the next and so on I'm no expert but I'm sure something along those lines would work
If we front loaded Mo like we did with Revis we could splurge during our SB run in a couple years. That would be one approach to get more cap space in the future.
I don't at all. If he was willing to accept $12-$13 million per season, he would have already been re-signed. He's not playing for the Jets for less that $15 million per season imo.
As much as I love Mo, I'm not paying him $18 million next season for his level of play. He's not worth it.
I know, but I don't think he's worth that, either. That's why the Jets are in such a tough cap position now. They're paying top dollar to players who are not tops at their positions. IMO there's no way Revis is worth $17 million this season. That's the one contract for which I fault Mac. IMO there's no way Mo is worth taking up 10% of next season's (2017) cap. Then there's Brick being paid an absolutely insane amount for his level of play. The Jets will never become an elite team and true Lombardi Trophy contender as long as they're overpaying players, especially those on the downside of their careers. Now, I know that Mo is younger, but I just don't see him as being worth what he's evidently asking for.
The more I think about it, the more I think the Jets should try to pay Wilkerson, rather than franchise tag him. The franchise tag is just under $15m. Give Mo a 16m per year deal and structure it the opposite of Revis. Basically he gets 12m this year and then his cap hit rises over the next few years as Revis' cap hits go down. Give Fitz a 2 year contract at 7-8m per year, structured similar to 6m, 10m. That leaves the Jets with around 5m for this year. If Kerly, Breno and Cumberland are cut that gives them about 12m to work with, not yet accounting for draft picks, with their 2 most important players signed. Draft oline and line backers all the way. Resign Powell then sign Forte on a cheap prove it deal or resign Ivory and draft a RB. Bring in the cheap depth players. Unfortunately we lose Harrison in this scenario, but I don't see any other way. Franchise tag for DT is $11m and he already rejected the 6m offer. They'd likely have to give him 8m+, which would mean no Forte and definitely no Ivory. The Jets would have to draft an early RB. That would leave them with a big ? at starting RB, so I just can't see it. I personally feel that they will resign Ivory.
Precisely WC ... with that scenario we end up with 12 mil in space .... plus I'm sure MM pulls another 5 to 7 out from under his sleeve somehow
At first I wanted to trade mo for a 1st and 3rd but the more I think about it the more I think we can keep him... not to mention would he even get us back those picks in a sign and trade... and who says they hit on the picks. Just because we have money tied up in Revis and Brick doesn't mean we should let Mo walk out the door that would be a mistake I think. Revis could be cut after 2016 with far less dead money and Brick can be cut once we draft or find a replacement for him (not that easy lol)
We did it with Moss, Abe, Key, Vilma, Farrior the list goes on... yes some had to be done but it still stings
That could possibly work with some protection for the Jets if Mo gets injured or his play suddenly declines (which is unlikely at his age). It looks as if Harrison could be kept as well, however. He said he wants to stay and that money isn't the most important thing. I'm not saying it would definitely work out, because once agents get involved all bets are off, but it could be possible.
