There's been a lot of talk about how much cap trouble we're in this season and how we have to pick and choose between re-signing some important guys. Obviously we're discussing something that has no concrete rules defined with the current CBA issues, but let's forget about that for a second and pretend the 2011 salary cap is $140,000,000 - which many would agree is a reasonable number. It almost certainly won't be the exact number but let's make that assumption so we can draw a box around this thing and see what we can do.

As of right now, our cap would be at $120,919,788. By releasing the following guys, we can get it down to $101,263,122.
    Jenkins
    Tomlinson
    Gholston
    Brunell
    Woody
    Thomas
    Taylor
    Hartsock

Our current scheduled free agents are as follows:
    Kellen Clemens
    Braylon Edwards
    Santonio Holmes
    Brad Smith
    Antonio Cromartie
    Wayne Hunter
    Shaun Ellis
    Trevor Pryce
    David Harris
    Lance Laury
    Drew Coleman
    Eric Smith
    Brodney Pool
    James Ihedegbo
    Nick Folk
    Steve Weatherford

If we were to let Clemens and Folk go and keep all the rest at these salaries we would still be under the cap. Obviously these are just some educated guesses, feel free to note if I'm way off base on any but I hope that doesn't become the primary conversation. Regarding Harris, I know the tag value is actually about $10MM but I think we can work out a long term deal with him at a better price after we tag him. The tag just prevents anyone else from sniffing around for now.
    Code:
    Braylon Edwards 6,000,000
    Santonio Holmes 7,500,000
    Antonio Cromartie	4,500,000
    Wayne Hunter 1,500,000
    Shaun Ellis 3,000,000
    Trevor Pryce 1,000,000
    David Harris 8,000,000
    Lance Laury 750,000
    Drew Coleman 1,000,000
    Eric Smith 1,000,000
    Brodney Pool 1,500,000
    James Ihedegbo 1,000,000
    Steve Weatherford	1,000,000

That would put us at $139,013,122.00. We could probably shave another 3-4 million off by restructuring Sanchez' salary and extending him leaving us with a cap somewhere in the neighborhood of $135MM.

The rookies will likely cost around $3MM, leaving us $2MM to play with and a pretty solid roster.

(didn't change Sanchez' salary to reflect projected change)

We may not be able to go out and sign any big FA's, but we can probably keep most of our talent, especially the young guys.

I got the numbers that weren't my own estimates from www.nyjetscap.com.

Nice. You could probably take that $1 million off for Trevor Pryce whom looks like he will retire.

If Sanchez restructures his contract that could make way for 1 "Major" FA move, and that being possibly Wimbley.

We'd also have the option to re-sign Jenkins at about $1MM in this scenario.

You really think Shaun Ellis is still worth three million?

Cromartie will get more then 4.5 million for sure and brad smith will get more then 2 million since some team will think they can turn him into a star instead of using him as a gadget player pike the jets do

I also don't think they'll cut woody I think they'll prolly restructure since no teams gonna break the bank for a old lineman coming off a torn achilles

^ellis prob could go for little north of 2 million, and i think brodney pool would require more money than 1.5mil

we could give him brad smith's 2 million.

Your numbers are off. We're currently at $120 million, but those players only save us $15 million off the cap, not $25 million. Puts us at $105 million, or about $110 million with rookies factored in. Assuming a $140 million cap, we'd have $30 million to work with. Remember also that each of those cuts creates an additional hole, so every one of our drafted rookies would have to contribute immediately.

    Not necessarily.

We'll more than likely bring in a few vets - specifically at safety and on the defensive line.

I highly doubt anyone we get outside of the fifth round will contribute immediately. The front office has to bring in some experienced players to fill certain roles.

I agree we will, but not under the situation Willie is proposing.

There's no possible way we can bring back everyone that WSW is proposing, but I like the way he's looking at this.

This team has a lot of dead weight that needs to be cut loose. It wouldn't hurt us to scrap players like Woody, Thomas, and Taylor.

Brad Smith's gone - the guy's in for an unnecessarily big payday. McKnight or Wilson can take his spot as a return man...Westhoff's never had a problem finding guys to return kicks.

I'm thinking the same. I'd say vet min ($880k?) + incentives. I also think Cro will play for a little less, maybe $3.5. Not that he's not worth the $4.5, but he's undervalued by a lot of teams because he looked to be the "weak link" and his off the field issues.

WSW - nice job on the write up. Thanks.

Son of a bitch, I used the Cap Value column instead of the cap savings if cut column. Fail - I'm about $7 million off.

I'm not sure how much more either of those guys will demand, but I can't imagine it would be too much more for either. Maybe I'm wrong.

Maybe not, maybe he's more of a $2 MM guy?

As for the additional holes, let's look at them:
Jenkins - We've already replaced that hole.
Gholston - Any UDFA can contribute what he has.
Woody - We have 2 guys that can fill that spot already
Thomas - I'm assuming we're going OLB in round 1.
Taylor - I'd rather see a younger guy with speed in his role. If we do go OLB round 1, that would probably cover most of what Thomas/Taylor are good for and we can use an UDFA for depth.
    Hartsock - Mulligan?

Yep. The players he listed are all expendable, provided Callahan is certain Ducasse can step in at RT and we plan to retain Hunter. I'm sure that's a reason why he was denied a chance to interview.

Agreed as well that Smith is gone, and with a running game that suddenly moves from 2-2 to 3-1, there's little need for us to run out of the wildcat. $30 million just doesn't give us the money to sign everyone AND get veteran depth. If I'm looking at it and what's ideal, I resign:

Edwards - $6 million per, $5 million hit in the first year
Holmes - $7.5 million per, $6 million hit in the first year
    Hunter - $1.5 million
    Ellis - $1.5 - 2 million
    Laury - $750k
    Coleman - $1 million
    Pool - $1.5 million
    Weatherford - $1 million
    Turner - $750k
    Ihedigbo - $1 million

Value against the cap: Roughly $19.5 million for that season. I take $3 - 5 million for rookie signings, and I have $5.5 - 7.5 million to try to build SOLID depth. I don't think it's likely that we'll be able to re-sign Cro or Harris unless we give up on one of the receivers, and I'd rather have them. In this situation, we've lost 14 players. If all 6 of our drafted rookies make the roster, that leaves 8 spaces to fill with that money. I like that situation.

^ Lance Laury doesn't really matter anymore. Josh Mauga was a beast of special teams.

I would like to see everyone else you listed re-signed.

I'm talking about roster spaces, not holes in that sense. Also, should mention that if any of our PSers can jump up, that leaves us some cash for higher grade FAs.

And Jenkins has been replaced with Pouha, but we need better depth behind him, which will likely come from the draft.

I'm not going to redo the numbers right now, but I'm sure that with some tweaking I could arrive at a similar conclusion. Maybe we lose Brad Smith, LT and Brunell to make it happen.

interesting take, I'm going to sleep better now. I'd ben assuming one of the following would not be resigned: Cro, Tone, Braylon, Hitman. I still think Cro is the odd man out if it came to that, but I like thinking we might be able to keep all of them.

In reply to the initial post...Don't forget.. just because Holmes could have a 7.5 million dollar average doesn't mean his cap number this year will be that. Tannenbaum is a cap master, he will make the pieces fit.

    Very nice write up though.

Yea I mean if I can get close in half an hour, Tanny can make it happen. I did fuck up my numbers, but with some tweaking I'm sure we could keep all of the big guns.
