I haven't seen an official announcement yet regarding Patton. Did the kid get excited/overeager and make the announcement, but the Jets not sign him yet?
Jets just signed Patton. The Jets announced the signing of former 49ers WR Quinton Patton. He will be reunited with his former 49ers position coach, John Morton, now the Jets' offensive coordinator. Patton set career highs last season in catches (37) and yards (408). The deal had been in the works since Patton visited last Saturday.
Patton was the #2 receiver for the niners last year behind old friend Jeremy Kerley who had 64 catches for 670 yards. So maybe there is more to this guy than a special teamer. He can run a Jet sweep anyway...
The following is from an article at ganggreennation.com and Patton's nfl.com draft profile: Sounds like a decent signing for competion, depth and STs.
Weaknesses Extends his hands from his frame, but doesnt snatch and secure the ball, making him struggle coming down with the ball when the defensive back contests him. As such, does not always find the ball downfield or come up with catchable passes when adjusting to it in the air. Inconsistent catching punts as a returner, makes some tough grabs running towards the sideline.
Thanks for adding this. The ganggreennation article didn't have the weaknesses, and I didn't have time to look them up earlier.
Solid upside type of signing that gives us veteran depth. We now have one proven receiver and a bunch of youth at the position. I'm excited to see this position group *hopefully* grow into something special. I'd like to see a Quincy Enunwa extension before he has a really good season and his value skyrockets. Our shitty quarterbacks might prevent him from putting up the numbers I think he's capable of though. I see a ton of Anquan Boldin in him.
good signing, i know everyone loves the wrs right now but this was necessary. a lot of potential with the youngsters, but a lot of raw potential. he fits nicely as a young vet.
Agreed. The hiring of Morton as OC also supports that the Jets are invested in bringing out the best of our young talented WR core. Morton has worked and has been credited with bringing out the best of some of the most talented wide receiver groups in the game. Patton's signing could very well mean the end of Decker once he's physically cleared. In order to let the young talented offensive players on the roster build chemistry and grow together, the majority of the reps need to go their way. 2017 is the year in which they can do so. I can see Maccagnan drafting a 6'4" WR in the draft or picking one up via the undrafted free agent market. We have guys who can stretch out the field and while Robbie Anderson can go up for balls, he's not your prototypical possession receiver and lightning rod thin. Perhaps Charone Peake can fill that roll or a TE. Yeah it's 50/50 for me but if we're all in on the youth movement he should go once deemed healthy .. a couple things that have me intrigued: 1. Was Jalin Marshall using performance enhancers or was it pot? If the kid was using PED's, it will be a disappointment. 2. Will Devin Smith return back to full form athleticly? Smith had potential and will also be a let down/bust .. Smith, Jennings, J.Marshall and Patton, IMO are players of the same mold. Like you said, it's going to be a battle, definitely will be a camp story this summer.
Decker is the only really proven receiver currently on the roster besides Enunwa, I don't see them getting rid of him. 4 of the other 7 have less than 200 career rcvg yards. While I like what Anderson showed last season he did drop a decent amount of balls, hopefully working with Ocho Cinco helps and he can follow up with a strong 2nd year. Sure if they all come into camp and clearly beat out Decker go with all the youngsters but for now I don't see him getting cut.
