From what I've seen, yes. I can't even remember another example of ever hearing another team "backing in."
"backing in" is a term made up by people who's teams didn't make it in to keep then from jumping out of windows.
You can't back into the playoffs. However, it would not be inaccurate to say we are limping into the playoffs.
The last 2 games we faced the #2 seeds from each conference on the road, we one one of the games and lost a very close one in the other. I don't think we are limping. Obviously, winning at Oakland for the 1st time ever in '01 we clearly backed in then beating NE on the road(they wouldn't lose a home game for 3 more years) and crushing 12-3 GB in the final week we clearly backed in as well:rofl2:
yes we have backed into the playoffs. the Phins game was a gimme the way the defense played. and to confidently enter the playoffs it wouldve said alot to have beaten either the Pats or the Bears both legit playoff teams. especially considering the Pats raped both Jets and Bears it would be nice to have at least been 2nd on that totem pole heading into the playoffs. get over it, this is what happens when we actually get the respect and expectations weve wanted. people actually set a bar for you and dump on you when you dont meet said expectations.
We dont back into the playoffs if we win this week in my opinion. I look at backing in as losing your last game or last couple of games and getting in because other teams lost. If we beat Buffalo it doesnt matter what anybody else would have done because none of them would have reached 11 wins anyway. And to be fair as far as record goes for the Jets it doesnt matter if we are 10-6 or 12-4 because 12-4 most likely would have gotten us the 6 seed still anyway.
Backed in? No. The "sick man" of the playoffs? Yes. Nothing short of a blow out Sunday, or this fan base has 0 confidence going in.
If anything would be the opposite of "backing in" it would be the first two Herm years--especially 2002, we steamrolled in.
Backing in? I don't think there is a formal definition of 'backing in,' though I've heard the term off and on for years. If I had to throw out a definition, the term might plausibly be used to describe a team that lost their game the week they clinched a playoff spot. Still, that's lame. If one looses a bunch of games about the time one clinches, it would be a worse omen. One wants to go into the post season playing solid football. Still, the Colts are a speed team that plays well in the early season and often limps into the playoffs with too many injuries. They often earn a big early season lead in the standings, and often don't hold it. But as they have Payton Manning, no one accuses them of backing in. Accuse Payton of choking in big games, yes, but not backing in. Teams have different reputations which might or might not be earned.
The term 'backing in' to the playoffs is just stupid in my opinion. Teams play 16 games a year and winning a lot of games early on in the year gives the team the luxury of losing and still making it to the playoffs later in the year, rather than the teams who need to win out to make it in. It's a way to make it seem like a team doesn't belong in the playoffs but any educated fan would know that once the playoffs start, all bets are off as the Jets showed last year. There is no such thing as backing into the playoffs
Sorry, losing 3 out of 4 (regardless of opponent) is limping. And if we lose this week (even if the game doesn't matter) dropping 4 out of 5 does not bode well.
I agree that we're limping, but I really don't think tomorrows game should be considered into that idea. We're playing our JV squad.
I herad Hub Arkish (who is a certified Jets hater) on the radio last night use the term "backed in". I have never heard of a team backing into the playoffs in week 16. You either win enough games or don't. So did the Dolphins and Jags back out of the playoffs by losing as well?
I am glad we are in... so long as you are in, anything can happen. We can play great. This team has it in them to do it. Whether they will or not is another story. I'm not gonna hold my breath. I will likely wake up after passing out from lack of oxygen. All that said. I was wondering what that horrifically beeping sound was. Sounds like something was... backing up.
Waaaait.. wait a minutes. Am I confused? Because I thought backing in was a legitimate catch-phrase for the Jets making the playoffs? At least it seemed to be Gold Standard during the Herm years.
That's a bunch of bullshit. Normally, I wouldn't be against resting some guys, but they apparently really need the work. A creme-puff type opponent like Buffalo is a good time to get the teams confidence back before the real work begins. And I just heard Brady saying nobody was resting on the Pats, especially him, because they have to, ya know, get better. I mean, this guys not happy until he's throwing 8 TDs a game. That is a winning attitude there!! (hopefully he doesn't like, break a knee or something). :breakdance:
What is bullshit, the fact that we're resting guys or the idea that if we lose with our JV squad it shouldn't be frowned on?
