To me, backing in can only occur the last week of the season. The Jets made the playoffs in Week 16, therefore, they did not back in.

It's best to just let him be. You won't be getting a logical response, assuming you get one at all.

I agree never heard anyone on TV last week say the Steerers backed in after the Jets beat them. I still think its part of the anti Jet take the media has had with them this year. I dont see how you are 10-4 then lose a tough game on the road and you back in. If they win against Buffalo they should take that back because theyd be in the playoffs anyway.

Only person that I heard that said the Jets didnt back in was Boomer on WFAN yesterday. You win 10 games you will put your team in a position to make the playoffs and that is exactly what happened.

I obviously have no personal motivation to side with the majority here, and I call BS on the "backed in" comments along with the rest of you.

Backing in implies that your last and only hope rests on other teams winning or losing. Even if the Jags had won on Sunday, the Jets would still be in the driver's seat.

It's just not correct use of the phrase, IMO. And it doesn't account for a team having 10 wins heading into the last two weeks of the season. It's crap. I don't like to admit it, but the Jets earned their postseason berth this time around.

The Bills could drafted a clone made from the DNA of Manning, Brady and Montana and the guy would lose his starting job in 8 games.

really who cares how they got there? now i could see if the jets lost again this week, then i guess they could say they backed into the playoffs. however if the jags won and the jets won this week we would have been in anyway.

i think its just fun for them to get guys like you all riled up over nothing. and it worked.

Well, actually if the Jets lose to Buffalo, they needed Jacksonville to lose last week to get in. If they lose to the Bills and Jax did not win last week, they would need someone else to lose. technically, you can't back into the playoffs in week 16,but so far they did not go in on their own.

Theres no such thing as backing into the playoffs. Whoever wins nfc west didnt back in because they did enough to win their division. Theres 20 teams who would love to "back in" to a playoff spot.

GoPats, the more time you spend on this site, and the less time you spend on Pats*fans.com, the more sense you make. Go figure. :)

Jets have been in a funk lately but they earned their spot, just like everyone else.

It's comical, there is no such thing as backing in. You either win the games required to get in or you don't. Whether we won them through the first 11 games of the season like 1986 or we won it on the last weekend like last year.

One very interesting note. Thjis is only the 3rd time we have clinched a playoff berth before the final week of the reg season since 1981(and only 2nd non strike shortened season)

    1981: last week
1982: strike season, had wrapped up before final game
    1985: last week
    1986: last week
    1991: last week
1998:Clinched playoff spot week 15, div week 16
    2001: last week
    2002: last week
    2004: last week
    2006: last week
    2009: last week
    2010: week 16

    Fickility

'The Media' is as fickle as the fans, and Rex Ryan's boastful attitude early in the season just upped the stakes. It's not limited to New York. A few wins, and any team seems Super Bowl bound. A few losses, and it's time to spend a draft pick on a quarterback. Heck, after the Browns loss, half of Patriots Planet had convinced themselves that Tom Brady lost it with his injury and would never return to what he used to be.

But I don't know that there is an official definition of 'backed in' any more than there is one for 'Dynasty.'
