I studied how the salary cap structure worked for an economics project my freshman year of college(my professor thought it was a great idea, because he is just as addicted to football as the rest of us). The reason that we were 26 million over and are significantly under, is simple. All roster bonuses for that year as well as all "likely to be ahieved" incentives automatically count against the cap for that year. If the bonuses aren't achieved a credit is given on next years cap, to an extent (their are clauses so a team can't pad the cap by offering a 20 million dollar incentive, so that it will be credited the following year). Chad did, in fact, count about 15 million against the cap due to his roster bonus and incentives he would easily achieve if he started most of the season. This same situation applied to most of the players who restructed. So by turning roster bonuses into signing bonuses, by not giving certain bonuses, by eliminating incentives, by changing incentives into bonuses, and by cutting players it was rather easy to get to the point where we are, by my estimations about 10-15 million under the cap. The franchise tag does count against our cap while Abe is tagged and hasn't signed it. Once he signs, it counts against our cap whether we trade him or not (even if he never recieves a cent from us). If we trade or release Abe before he signs it then it is removed from the cap. He could sign it to screw us over by signing it, however, he would then be forced to play or hold out and if he holds out it is going to screw him when it come time for him to sign elsewhere. As for the rest of the off-season. With the signing of the new CBA the cap will likely increase atleast 10 million, bringing us to about 20-25 million. If we trade Abe that frees up another 8 million(a 300K salary will take his place in the top 51 that count). So in all, we are looking at likely being over 25 million under the cap, possibly being 32 or 33 million under the cap. We are in good shape and Mike T. is, in fact, a mathematical and salary cap genius.

free agency i think you get a corner. If we get the ninth overall. Draft D'brickashaw ferguson with the fourth pick. ninth pick vernon davis(the guy is a freak of nature) second round if nick mangold is gone draft greg eslinger. He is flying under the radars. The guy is an all american im surprised he hasnt got some interest from jet fans.

Good post, and supplied me with a tidbit I was a bit fuzzy on.... how the 8.3 tag price stays with us if Abraham signs the tender, even if he gets traded. I think he wants out so bad, he won't run the risk of not being traded and having to show up for mini-camps and the preseason.

    Nice job!

That is a shit hot repsonse!..If this holds true the Jets could nab some decent FA pickups and with the draft possibly 2 first rounders if we dump off Abe to another team ...wouldn't be too shabby..

I'm sorry but if Herm was still here, we would be in a mess..

Dah! Dah! Dah! Da! Da!...I'm Loving It.....

Going back a few posts, couldn't Penny have been considered involved in a special teams play if he played for a fourth down conversion? I don't know if that is the case, or even if he actually did, but I would assume that would count wouldn't it?

Its really hard to give an exact number as to how far we'll be under because the exact number of the restructures havn't been released. My best guess is that with a new CBA we will be about 25-28 million under going into free agent signing and without it 15-18 million under(this is without Abe). Free Agents I'd be interested in: TE Chris Baker, TE Justin Peele, OT Tom Ashworth, NT Ma'ake Kemoeatu, WR David Givens, WR Andre' Davis (compete with Cotchery for #3 and brings speed), WR Michael Lewis (same as andra Davis), WR Kevin Curtis (same as Andra Davis), LB Matt Wilhelm (Depth), LB Matt Chatham (depth), LB Nick Greisen, RB/FB Verron Haynes, QB Sage Rossenfells, QB Patrick Ramsey, QB Josh McCown, QB Tommy Maddox, DE Brett Keisel, G Stephen Neal, CB Andre Dyson. Obviously I dont want all of these guys, just throwing a few names out there who would fit well and be relatively cheap with a few exceptions.

Doesn't matter in 2006 anyway... LTBE or NLTBE will need to be accountable on the 2006 cap since 2007 is an uncapped year.

That is not true. Otherwise Penny's incentives this year would be charged against our cap right now, saving us nothing.

I read an article (and posted it) where it said NLTBE incentives do not affect the cap right now, but hit the cap immediately if earned. (which would cause a team to have quite a problem if it put them over the cap mid-season)

    exerpt from http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/5158614

What they are scrambling about are certain limitations in the final capped year. Need an example? Usually when a player reaches an incentive in the season the hit is either pushed to the end of that season or the next season's cap. But in 2006, if no CBA is yet reached, whenever a player achieves his incentive, it would count immediately against the cap. Thus, we could have several players with a bunch of easily achievable incentives that would have to count immediately against a team's cap. So what happens if a team has a player reach $5 million in incentives by November? Good question, one that many teams are going to have to answer.

For the good of the jets lets assume that we sign a vet QB (kitna) that will win the starting job an Penny wont earn any of those incentives, then we can drop him at the end of the year & draft a new QB (Brady Quinn)

I am impressed. You know yer chit, young fella! I just laid out some numbers that I thought were likely savings under the new restructered deals. I guess i also like it because your numbers fall in line with my off the top of the head guesses, which make me look smart, at least to me! LOL.

I also argee with the FA's (and potential FA's) you have targeted as possible signings, with some exceptions..... Dyson (over rated) Maddox (awful) ditto Sage, but I would add Adrian Peterson, as a long shot, and that O lineman, Black, from KC, if he gets released. (unlikely if Shields gets cut).

Actually, I think Dyson would be okay if we brought him in and dropped Barrett. I wouldn't put him ahead of Miller's progress though.

I don't think anyone would complain if we picked up Kitna. He is one of the very few people everyone seems to agree can help the team.

Yeah, and i think dyson would be a good signing...
Hes only 27, and him and miller would be good for starting, and have barret be a 3rd CB
