It doesn't matter if McCown is older than Fitz either because if we view Fitz as a 2-3 year gap filler, wouldn't McCown be the same thing? He had absolute dog crap to work with on offense in Cleveland last year and the guy was putting up really good numbers. Check out his game by game stats. He maybe has 1-2 more years left but isn't that what we need if we're looking at Petty long term or another QB in the draft? He has 2 more years left at about a $5 million cap hit per year. Him or Hoyer would be solid replacements. Trash QBs don't throw for over 800 yards in a 2 successive game period, and over 1,100 yards in a successive 3-game period.
I prefer my QBs to play a 16-game season. I'm sure Geno will rack up at least one good 3-game streak before he's 36.
I think McCown is a better QB than Fitzpatrick, just older and more injury prone. Completed almost 64% of his passes, just 4 int’s and was on pace for a 4200 yard season. While Fitz completed under 60%, 15 int’s, 3900 yards while being surrounded by superior talent. I have no problem signing him and drafting another QB who can develop/battle it out with Petty.
That's understandable. I just think the Jets will want a veteran there with Geno and Petty. The thing is with McCown if he makes it through the first 10-12 games, Petty might be ready to take over the starting job by that point, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if McCown couldn't make it the whole season. I'll have no problems if Mac does decide to go with Geno, Petty and a rookie, but wouldn't hate McCown.
There isn't a QB available that will take us to the Super Bowl this year. I'd rather suffer through a Geno disaster and a Petty trial by fire than another mediocre season with the tease of being a playoff contender. If anything, Fitz gives us the best chance, but I do not want to see Glennon or McCown.
I don't think there's a QB in the NFL (well maybe Aaron Rodgers) who could take this Jets team to the SB this year, and even with him, the Jets would have to really upgrade both OT positions for Rodgers to stay healthy and have a shot.
The other big thing is that it's not normal to go into a competition between players who are unlikely to pan out for the year. Neither Geno nor Petty is likely to play at a high level next year and unless the Jets are trashing the year to rebuild there's no point to setting up a competition between them because the most likely result is they'll have a weak season and deep six the team. If the Jets add McCown or another vet to that they have a much better chance that one of the three gives them a half decent season than if they go with just the two young guys. This also would give them more flexibility in camp to make a decision on which way to go for the year. Hoyer would be another vet they could pursue to give them the "seasoned" element of the mix to maybe give them a chance. I like Geno but his head is not in the right place on the field. He's like a less polished version of David Carr at this point. He took a lot of hard hits early on and he's a bit gun shy now.
What are you talking about?!?! You're saying that a top qb (that's not Rogers) or even a mid range qb like Eli wouldn't make us favorites this year?!? Our ol is too old/too young but last year they played better than they should of. Besides I would put the jets up position to position to any team. I'd definitely lose comp with lb but I'd put our wr, rb, dl, and secondary up against anyone. 4/6 position we're top 5-7
I wouldn't have a problem with it. Its a better option than going with Geno or Petty on Day 1 if Fitz wont re-sign. And I want no part of Hoyer. There could still be a QB competition to play out, but at least there's no pressure on Geno/Petty in TC. McCown's stats (even only 8 games) with no one to throw to except for TE Gary Barnidge werent bad at all, ---- avg 263 yards per game when Fitz was like 244. Big $$ savings.
