You're right, it's unfortunate you can only keep players for 1 year, and next season doesn't actually exist.
Yeah and you would lose that money and pick for what? Some good moments in a losing season? That isn't desperation?
uh, we found a beneficial offensive weapon going forward and are now in a position to definitively judge Geno smith with excuses?
I havent looked at Harvin's contract closely but the Jets were rolling 21 million over. They sacrificed 7 million of it. Still rolling over a lot of money, and this gives the Jets a chance to better evaluate Geno Smith while seeing if Percy Harvin can be a piece for them going forward. I have no problem with this move from a personnel standpoint. The NFL is about acquiring talent and there is no doubt that Harvin is a very talented player.
The problem is that Harvin is a malcontent. The cap ramifications and loss of draft pick are not significant problems here. I was all for bringing in Holmes for the 2010 season because he could help the team that year and the Jets only had to part with a late round pick. During the 2010 season, I wrote that the Jets should not re-sign Holmes because he is a jerk. I can tolerate bringing in a jerk for help in the short-term if it will not cost the team much in regards to draft picks and cap space. Unless the Jets finish 9-7 or 10-6 and sneak into the playoffs, Harvin will not help this season. The hope is that he likes the franchise and gets his anger issues under control so that he can help the team in 2015 and be a positive on and off the field.
This is great. Finally someone who will punch Geno in the mouth every time he does something dumb with the ball.
I don't even think that would be the worst case scenario. Worst case scenario is he goes the fuck off this year, you guys sign him to a new deal and he is still the guy that can't stay on the field I mean why are we talking worst case. Best case is he suddenly never gets hurt, loves playing for the Jets and has no problems with teammates and consistently racks up yards and points. Which seems more likely?
I imagine that the Seattle GM said,"oh you don't like it here Percy, I can take care of that." Owner says, "where is the worst place we can send him?" GM from Seattle,"I got a guy". Percy,"What!? , no I'm good I swear!" "Happy Trails", the FO of Seattle cheered in unison. Owner,"Yep you were right, Idzik isn't GM material".
Classic false dilemma. It's much more likely that we end up somewhere in between these 2 outcomes. The question is, is the risk worth the potential costs/rewards? Since the risk is a 6th freaking rounder and 7 million, I personally think it is.
You're right. I feel like there are a lot more negative outcomes to this situation than positive. Not much more to say about it I guess. Time will tell
Assuming this is a trade that was made with the long term in mind, how will this impact our ability to re-negotiate with Harvin? I've read he's got $48.6 million left on the 3.5 year deal he signed with Seattle. We're not paying that beyond this season unless he absolutely amazes with his on and off field play. When approached, if he says "screw you - honor my contract or I'm going to test the market", which is a likely scenario in my view, we've got to let him go and then how was this not a short term desperation play by a 1-6 team? If he underperforms and/or is a malcontent, we can just cut him, but how was that not a short term desperation play by a 1-6 team? I think there is some measure of desperation in this move. I hope it works out, and I'm excited to see what Percy can bring to our offense, but Idzik and Rex are clearly on the hot seat and this doesn't exactly fit their "Play like a Jet" or "We're building through the draft - Stay the course" mantras. There aren't a lot of 1-6 teams that would do this deal IMO.
Please all this one year rental talk has to stop. We are not going to let him go after this season. My guess is that worst case senario we try to renegotiate his deal after he disappoints. In that case Harvin has zero leverage, he can either take a hike and get less money somewhere else or he can take the guaranteed money here at a lower cap hit. Plus we have so much cap room we can overpay and likely would to keep him around, giving him the best deal possible. Why are we talking about pinching pennies when we couldn't even spend all our cap room if we tried. He is exactly what this team needs and I applaud Idzick for his balls. Screw the 4th round pick, its nothing compared to the potential we got for Harvin.
I wish all you 'fans' who are pissed because we might win more games this year would just sign off and move on to another team. A lot of fans jumped off Brady's ass a few weeks ago so there might still be room on there. Go give it a look.
I think this is the most reasonable "negative" slant a grounded person can have on the deal. Kudos to you.
certainly feeling better about this now more details about the possible compensation are coming out - when it was reported as a potential 2nd rounder it was looking a lot more like desperation
of course we are going to win more games this year as our schedule gets a lot easier after the bye - that would/should happen regardless of this move - given Harvin has to learn the playbook from scratch I don't see him being a huge contributor this year in any event
