This is why Tannenbaum is a great GM. We went from supposedly being in cap hell to having a great cap figure? And what did we sacrifice? Bowens, Barrett, Favre, Baker, and maybe Moore. Of those five, Moore is the only one we'll miss, and hopefully he'll replace him adequately in free agency with all the cap space we have.
'Great'? You've set your sights pretty low. Tanny is an excellent cap manager, and that is very good, but he is far from 'great' as an overall GM.
Cimini says it is at this moment 37M http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/2009/02/six-things-jets-will-do-with-c.html
I think Tanny having Clinkscales down the hall helps out a lot....in regards to the "personnel" portion of his GM duties. It's a nice combo....
Yes, but he recognizes that the actual amount of available cash is about $18 million. If we can sign Scott and Leonhard and give Leon a deal, that will eat up most of it. We're really not in a position for another big free agent splash.
Scott, Leonhard and an extension for Leon would be more than a happy offseason for me... This team won 9 games, it isn't like the'yre some sort of dog trash.
I'd be happy as well. Just trying to slow down some of the speculative threads. It's hopeless, though, judging from the responses on the Anquan Boldin thread.
1 out of 2 first round picks ain't bad when you're spending close to 60 million dollars on 1st round rookie contracts, eh? Justify it all you want, but so far Gholston is a huge black eye for our scouting department.
I don't know who the hell Joey Clinkscales is, but was he around for the 2006 and 2007 drafts? Revis, Ferguson and Mangold come to mind if so.
We have had some good drafts, I don't like to be portrayed as some one-dimensional jackass that can't concede a point. But they have been 'good' and not 'great'. Our FO has made enough mistakes in the past 3-4 years and further back than that when it comes to overall personnel management that I can only rate them doing an 'above average' job.
Gholston sure looks like a big pile of crap right now, but he was a consensus top ten pick from last year and considered a very good pass rushing tweener that the jets badly needed. At the momment the pick looks like its goign to be a bust, but I will wait to see if REx can do anything with him before I competely write him off. We have had very good drafts. I don't think that bashing the FO on that one very bad pick is not warranted.
I'm not writing him off, either, but what consensus we had last year was among draftniks and fans, not teams. Teams don't publicize their ratings before the draft, and rarely do afterwards. We don't know what teams had Gholston rated high or low. What we do know is that plenty of players coughRONDAYNEcough have blown away the competition in college and have fallen on their face in the pros. It's a scouting department's job to determine which players won't. Especially if you're going to give that player a 50 million dollar contract.
This has been beaten to death....but all the opinions on Gholston are moot at this point. This season will be his litmus test. He had had his mulligan last year......If Rex can't squeeze any production out of him....then he's done. Bottom line. Is he worth the 50 million rookie contract?......hell no......in fact, no rookie is.....but that's the nature of the beast in today's NFL.
