That guy lost out on a huge pay day. In a world where it costs $600-700 to get a Jeter signed item I'd have no problem selling him that ball for a huge price.

I wouldn't knock you for it, but I wouldn't personally do it. Like Lopez, I feel that's Jeter's ball and I wouldn't hold it ransom.

No doubt in addition to the free stuff that kid got, Jeter is going to pay him out big for his generosity.

My line of thinking is why is he entitled to that ball? every ball that is hit into the stands is free for anyone to catch and keep. This is an era where these players sell their signatures(and game used items) for a a very high price. If I caught it then it would be my ball and I'd sell it. It's pocket change for jeter but the type of money that can be huge for the average fan sitting in the bleachers.

I don't know. He got a pretty sweet package. Whether Jeter does or doesn't give him anything additional, he made out okay.

I don't understand this. People are mad at the kid for not being greedy. He sounds as humble as can be. He said he's young enough with a good degree that he has time to make 250k. He doesn't need to auction the ball off. So willing to be hard working is now equal to "douchebag"? I wonder what is wrong with people these days when people who show nothing but class are considered the douchebags.

Again, I wouldn't knock you for it. I just feel like I'd be a lot more like him. I wouldn't call you out for selling it. Like you said, it's fair game and the money would be a life-changer for the majority of people in those stands. It just wouldn't be what I'd do. But I wouldn't knock anyone for doing it that way.

I'm afraid the kid is going to get hit with a tax bill he can't handle. Someone needs to sort that out.

I think there has only been one poster so far saying the kid is a douchebag. That doesn't seem to be a majority opinion.

I'll just go ahead and assume you're not on Twitter then. It's unbelieveable what people are saying about this kid. Unbelieveable and disgusting.

I'm not a Yankees fan either, but Jets has been a true Yankee since day one.

Hopefully the Yankees send that guy a check worth $20,000. Got to applaud our govt. for punishing those who are not greedy. Now I know Im keeping whatever ball I catch.

They haven't yet, but could. Who knows how it'll shake out. I'm really hoping that the Yankees do the right thing and pay it for him if it happens.

    They will.

Hind sight is 20/20 though, the kid should have went to the media and said

"I intend to give Derek Jeter the ball back without asking for anything in return. Though I do have a feeling my 100,000 in student loans will miraculously disappear because the Yankees are a class act organization."

Put the ball in the Yankees' court and then if they don't get paid off let the media tear the Yankees up.

I only have 20k in loans, and my top priority would be to pay them off under any circumstances.

Well, in hindsight, the kid's not making out too bad. Score one for the good guys!

Miller beer and Modells are chipping in to pay not only the taxes, but some of his student loans as well. So he gets to keep the tickets, gets off with no tax burden, and gets some of his loans paid off.

Plus, Steiner Sports gave him a 2009 Yankees Championship ring.

Not bad for a kid who wanted nothing but to give Jeter the ball he felt Jeter earned.
