Yeah because he too is freakin huge. Rex won't line Coleman up one the line every snap, that was to add confusion. When we play a good running team we need the BIG & STRONG guys up front all the time.
The OP is actually 100% right. I don't see why we would ever not draft someone because they can't play a system. Rex has proven he doesn't really have a system - he's adaptable. If the guy can play, he can play.
this isn't right. Ellis played DT in sub packages; they weren't in the 3-4 much but when they were they played Pouha at the nose.
Rex is playing without a definitive system, (maybe, an underlining philosophy) not because he doesn't need it, but because he doesn't have the tools to install a base set. For instance, against Colts and Pats, Rex showed Marquice cole, a freakin' CB, at DE spot - basically daring them to run. Why did he have to pull this shit off? Because he didn't have safeties (or LBs for that matter) that couldn't cover for shit. If they are passing, Cole pulls back in a zone, flooding the passing lane. If he had a legitimate pass rushing threat which could limit the time a QB could have drastically, do you really think Rex would have pulled off that kind of Madden shit? This goes hand in hand with the DL position. If you look at how Jets run was stuffed in the 1st half against the Steelers, you will easily recognize that it is NOT the DL's job to engage them; instead there was always a LB (ILB if running inside, OLB if running outside) waiting to tackle. In Jets case? Jets front 3 does not command double team. That allowed Steelers OLs to advance to the 2nd level, and neutralize the LBs. When Rex went with running defense, Ben never failed to make Rex pay. (See how the last drive killed the Jets.) Since Jets DL didn't contain Ben all day, nor could they open up lanes for pass rush, Ben had a rather comfortable day (his miserable rating notwithstanding).
