hmm. you really see Brad Smith in the RB rotation in the future? i guess it's not farfetched if we use him the way Bush is used: minimal amount of carries, splitting wide to exploit mismatches, and reverses, etc. but i have a hard time envisioning him as a featured back. i'm not sure he's built to take that kind of beating week in and week out. as for QB, i don't think they'll want him there because it may hinder his big-play-downfield capabilities, whether that's catching passes or however else they want to get him the ball. i guess the Jets don't even know what lies ahead for Smith which is why they're using him at every Offensive skill position -- to see where he is most effective. cheers
now i agree brad smith wont e starting at qb.. but are you serious thats slot wr spot is gonna be smith by next year.. in fact if Jmac keeps playing lik a girl he could have by the end of the seson.
also makes you wonder where are all the people who were crying over the Santana Moss/ Coles trade AFTER Moss had a breakout year and Coles had a subpar one. How bout the people who wanted Deion Branch because Coles was all washed up?
I do not see Brad Smith becoming our 3rd/Slot reciever or Tailback. Infact He has a few QB runs but i dont think hes ever been handed the ball by Chad yet. (He gotten catches and direct snaps.) I see Brad Smith beeing our 4th WR and our (Just for Emergency) 4th String QB (behind Chad, Kellen, and whoever else we pick up after we trade or cut Ramsey.) He will also stay as our Top Gunner on PR. Hopefully Mangini will even use him on Kickoffs as a gunner.
actually, i think he got a handoff against the Packers. just because he isn't regularly involved in these roles doesn't mean he's a career backup. like i said, i think they're easing him into the Offense by trying to get him the ball in various ways, seeing how he's most effective. it's too early to slate him at any one position. cheers
This post makes me smile. I remember when ESPN was doing the team rankings by position over the summer they had the Jets receiving corps ranked somewhere in the bottom fourth. Little did they know that Cotcherty would be that good, and they underrated Coles due to him not having a qb last season.
I thought Cotchery would finish with about 50-55 receptions this season and I was OK with that. His production has been beyond anything I expected. And the great thing about this combo is, if one doesn't have a good day, the other will. When teams focus on shutting down Coles, Cotchery puts up numbers. They've been fun to watch.
The Cincy similarity is the closest. Everyone has been talking about Coles (even if he is a step behind Johnson) and the Cotch comes out of nowhere (ala Whosyourmomma).
Yes they do. They make catches, they do it over the middle, and they make plays. They aren't flashy but they are not flaky(see TO over the middle, see CJ first half of the season). If you look at most of the Jets offensive sets, they pretty much only use two receivers. This means that if its a pass, the defensive knows its probably going to Coles and Cotch and they still can't stop them. I doubt there are many tougher receivers in the league than Coles. He's probably playing with like four injuries we don't know about too.
Let me show this again to put their production into perspective. TOP 3 Receptions: 1. Bengals-137 2. Jets-131 3. Colts-131 Yards: 1. Colts-2,012 2. Bengals-1,922 3. Jets-1,619 TDs: 1. Colts-14 2. Bengals-14 3. Cowboys-14 --------------- 4. Carolina-10 5. Jets-9 Speaks volumes.
Phil Simms has the brain power of a used bed pan, I'd try not to use anything he says as a positive... for every one thing he says that seems to make sense, he says 4 to 5 things that just confirm he's brain dead Ellis
I hope you're not implying that this is one of the 4 to 5 things that confirms he's brain dead....but whatever, people are taking this topic off focus. After looking at the numbers does the Jets combo belong?
