I'm not sure that's right. I think if you're not drafted or if you are cut, it's highest bidder. A lot of the news about Demps is saying he's an unrestricted free agent. I think that most times an UDFA will be at minimum, because he would be less than a 7th rounder. But this is an unusual case and I think teams can pay what they want.
I can only guess but I would think the issue was wasting a pick at all. I don't think anyone including Demps knew if he would ever return to football or not. Pro: 1. Fast as hell. 2. Can hit a crease if there is one to hit. 3. Very good on kick returns. 4. Very few people can close on him if he gets a step. 5. Would probably be cheap. 6. Has always described himself as a football player that can run track. Cons: 1. Not really elusive but uses his speed if he has room. 2. Not large and has probably lost some weight for the Olympics. 3. Did have issues with hammy in college. I'm a Gator so I am bias but if he is cheap and can at least contribute early on ST then I say bring him in at least for a look. I know if he were returning kicks against my team I would be worried.
Demps IS an undrafted free agent. I'm not sure that info is correct, but it's the only thing I could find.
The other one was, not the RB. Looks like he was originally projected to go between the 3rd and 5th. Ganaway has been injured a bit - I wonder if the Jets could cut him and hope to sneak him on the practice squad.
If I weren't a better man, I'd point out all the people that gave me crap for suggesting Demps a few days ago telling me it wasn't Jets related, we didn't need him, couldn't use him, claiming me to just be a Gator homer strictly because Demps was a Gator. Of course now that word is out the Jets are actually interested peoples opinions seem to have changed. Good thing I'm a better man......lol. :breakdance:
Gridirion Sports @gridironsports We anticipate Jeff Demps to sign with an NFL team within the next 24 hours. Still talking with teams and finalizing things. @nohemybaltodano
At this point I think we have to assume that the Jets want Demps badly. I can also guarantee that the Patriots are in the mix also - maybe just to block us but they are in the mix. The Jets need to get this guy.
Ben Volin @BenVolinPBP #Gators track star Jeff Demps expects to sign with a team soon, but it won't be the #Dolphins a source said
Jenny Vrentas @JennyVrentas Tebow said Jets asked him about Jeff Demps. Said he'd love to have him with Jets. Won't recruit but may talk to him as a friend. #nyj Manish Mehta @MMehtaNYDN Tim Tebow says that the Jets reached out to him to get his thoughts on Free agent Jeff Demps, who is on team's radar. #nyj Rich Cimini @RichCimini Jeff Demps' agent, Daniel Rose, tells me #Jets are "very interested." JD may visit/work out for couple of teams. No word yet on Jets visit.
There's literally no reason to NOT take a flyer on this kid. He has amazing speed and honestly, if it doesn't pan out you let him ride the pine and develop or you cut him. You aren't going to be spending much money either way, it's not a cap crippling move. Like I said, there's not a single reason to dislike this signing should we actually sign him.
I'm not sure if that's true. If it was, why would college players go through the draft if they can make more money as an UDFA?
They have to go through the draft. Demps did, he just told people he wasn't going to play. But a player can't hit the UDFA market unless he's going through a draft and every team passes on him. Any team could have picked Demps. The players who actually don't go through the draft have to either wait until next year or apply for the supplemental draft (like the one where Terrell Pryor was picked by the Raiders last year).
