If the idea is to bring him in to compete w/ Hill....so be it. And yes it's low risk high reward. My beef is that I don't think it solves the issue w/ our passing game. It's like signing a run stuffing OLB when what we need is a pass rusher. Too many people are just generalizing our overall need at WR & just assume Edwards solves the issue. But the void is more specific than that & Braylon isn't the solution.
I think the vertical passing game is our biggest need, since Hill hasn't come around yet. Our second biggest need is a WR that can out-muscle guys for the ball. Holmes & Kerley have both had success in the slot and in intermediate routes. Edwards is a big guy that can block and he gives us that Plaxico type presence in the red zone, plus he can go deep. I'd like to see more of Mcknight & Kerley running deep routes as well since they are also speedy guys, plus they are good at getting yard after the catch.
I really think we should sign LLoyd to a one year contract. We have the money, he can produce and next year we can sign Cruz
Lots of injury concern yes, but if we're able to head into the season with a healthy Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards, Jeremy Kerley, Kellen Winslow Jr and Stephen Hill... Suddenly our pass catching options aren't as weak as once thought. Especially if we establish a ground game (really looking forward to Ivory's style of rushing attack). Having a motivated Holmes and Edwards on the outside could be nice. Think 2010. Kerley's a slot WR to the 'T'. Fantastic talent. Kellen had zero burn last season behind Gronk and Hernandez but lets not forget that Kellen Winslow put up 218 receptions and 2,377 receiving yards during 2009, 2010 and 2011 with an inexperienced struggling Quarterback down in Tampa (Freeman). That's an average of 72.6 receptions and 792.3 receiving yards per season with a pretty bad quarterback. Having Winslow down the middle of the field could be something else to watch. And say what you say but Stephen Hill was only a rookie last season and yes, dropped some passes but that's the NFL in regards to developing but at the end of the night, he's a physical freak of nature in regards to athletic ability. A very fine young prospect to say the least. Then we have a backfield full of young talent in Ivory, Goodson, Powell and McKnight. Obvious question marks at quarterback, but even with a rookie in Geno under Center, our offense has potential after this Winslow addition along with a potential addition of Braylon on the outside.
"BBB" !!! (not intended for the Better Business Bureau) Bring BACK BRAYLON!!! D@mmit this will be upcoming, nothing more than a transitional season so let's just pull out everything, throw it in the "mix" & see what it makes! Ain't got nuthin' else to lose..............!
It's extremely difficult to win an NFL championship. Which is why our Jets haven't won a championship dating back to Namath in 68-69. Not because we're a jinxed franchise but because it's tough to win an NFL title. It's football. Offensive lines have to be solidified, quarterbacks must be able to read a defense along with run an offense, WR's must be talented threats, backs need to be durable throughout courses of games etc. Then you have the entire defensive aspect of the game. X's and O's. Leadership. Proven talent mixed with untapped potential. Special teams. So hard on a fan year in and year out but it's fun stuff. BBQ's on Sundays with the Jets. A reason to create exciting times. It's never easy but just the thought of Gang-Green becoming super bowl winners, the Jets in a Super Bowl game for the first time in over 40-45-50 years or whatever it may be... The Jets will be the talk of not only the town but also the world. All I ask for, is one Super Bowl weekend. So, when it comes to productive players such as Winslow Jr. and possibly Braylon, why not take a low risk potentially high reward situation? Why wouldn't we, especially coming into the offseason with a plenty question marks and doubts surrounding our pass catching options. Losing Keller was an offseason blow. Winslow Jr. was a must off the open market. Veteran leadership/role player. Heading into the offseason we were only left with an injured Holmes, a second year talent in Hill who's potential ability is sky high but yet still undeveloped and raw and Kerley who most love. Not too many options although we've all been thankful that a young up and coming slot WR in Jeremy Kerley looks to be the real deal. We can build around this kid. Surround him with larger outside WR's such as Holmes, Hill and Edwards. Another pass catching target in Winslow while Cumberland continues to make his emergence. Gronkowski and Hernandez no, but Winslow Jr. and Cumberland have the ability/potential to put in work down the middle of the field. Which both of Geno and Sanchez could use. Especially since they say a pass catching tight end can provide a quarterback with a best friend/helping hand. Any quarterback regardless of jersey number or name needs weapons. Winslow and Edwards can prove to be weapons for our offense. Regardless if we're starting a rookie QB in Geno or a 5th year quarterback in Sanchez out USC, heading into his 5th season with experience and struggles (still haven't gave up on this kid) we need players right. We really have those. Ivory, Goodson, Powell and McKnight are all players. Young backs. All competing against not only one another but also our re-vamped defense outside of #24. It'll pay off on the field. Winslow's a player. Edwards and Holmes both compete on Sundays. Hill and Kerley are young talents we're featuring with Kerley showing Chrebet like route running ability. Cumberland only Jet fans know what to expect. You need talent for your QB and with an addition of Braylon, we'll have that. These types of offseason additions can take an offense/team to the next level. Depth. As J.R Smith collapsed after winning the 6th man of the year award for many of us, Anthony (our quarterback for example) was left with not enough help/offensive scores. If only we had deeper scoring depth/ability. Same situation. Lets not leave our quarterback(s) with limited amount of options. What if Holmes isn't 100%, Braylon and Hill are up next lining up on the outside. If Cumberland goes down once again and/or isn't productive, now, we can consider Cumberland a backup TE while Winslow hopefully dominates the middle of the field. Jr. has became our instant starter and rightfully so. Kellen's previous/back production is proven. Now it's time to see how he recovers upon injury. Could be a nice pickup. Injury concern or not, it's a low risk along with potentially high reward. Look at Tampa. Gave up a first rounder (13th overall), a 4th and most likely a 3rd rounder come next years draft and more importantly $96 million dollars in cap space. Making Revis the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history. For a player coming off a serious ACL injury. For a corner back who's no longer 18-24 years of age he's now 27, 7th year, coming off only one game before getting injured during the second game last season. And look what Tampa gave up. High risk for a potentially high reward. They protected themselves by not attaching guaranteed money into Revis' contract. The Jets had to move Revis and Tampa bit. Who's to say Revis'll ever be the same animal while he's smashing at the L.O.S against Calvin or having to back petal against Dez Bryant? Etc. Will Revis put Tampa into a corner knowing they gave up a 13th overall along with a 3rd rounder (hopefully top 5 of the 3rd) and holdout for guaranteed money come the offseason? Tampa would have to collapse or risk backlash with empty stadiums. Revis will get his due. Good luck to Tampa's front office. Long winded post got myself into thinking Jets football but these signing in Winslow Jr. and possibly Braylon Edwards can help take an offense or quarterback to the next step.
thats how i read it. i bet he would consider santana moss and al toon too... you know if al still played and all.
Braylon is a BIG STRONG receiver that other teams respect. He's beaten them all at one time or another (remember his back flip after knocking the Pats out of the playoffs?). Bray will demand and receive the attention from other defenses that helps open everything else up. Remember Hill last year after waxing the Bills? He couldn't get off the line of scrimmage with press coverage. Bray? He'd pick the DB up and throw him on his head, and not just in beating press coverage, but in the running game too. Bring Braylon back is as close to a no brainer as it gets.
He would literally come back at vet. minimum in a position of need for a team he's familiar with. I have no clue how this hasn't happened yet.
did everyone forget how nobody wanted him last year and then he didnt really produce at all once he was picked up? stop living in 3 years ago land.
I don't understand why Idzik is preaching "competition, competittion, competition" and then at the WEAKEST position on the roster he doesn't do shit. Why is S. Hill the only guy who's not in a competition with someone considering he hasn't proven shit in his NFL career yet?
This is what I don't get. He DID produce when we picked him up last year. He was certainly better than than any other wr except Kerley in the last 3 games of the season.
No, but I do remember him coming onto a bad team with a new OC late in the season and for the 3 games he played was the #1 receiver.
O.K, but, Braylon Edwards only played within three games for us last season but yet still put up 10 receptions for 125 yards. An average of 3.3 receptions along with 41.6 receiving yards per game. He was also thrown into the fire with A.) an awful offensive "coordinator" in Tony Sparano, B.) a struggling quarterback and C.) Without a preseason and/or training camp to gain chemistry with our team. He still came in and put up production without second thought. Those 10 receptions along with 125 receiving yards during only three games would be on pace for 52.8 receptions along with 665.6 receiving yards during a full 16 game schedule despite less than ideal situations. Lets just say that only Kerley put up more than 52 receptions (56) and only Kerley put up more than 665 receiving yards (827). But yet, fans such as yourself and others are acting as if Braylon Edwards wouldn't be an important free agent addition? Mind boggling. Edwards also combined for 88 receptions, 1,445 receiving yards and 11 TD's during 2009-2010 (28 games). Those numbers were put up with a rookie and second year quarterback in Sanchez along with an offense in which ran the ball more than any other team during those two seasons. How quickly some forget. He also averaged 5 receptions and 53.3 receiving yards per game during 6 postseason games. Can also come up with important first down receptions. Signing Braylon Edwards is a no brainer for these Jets. Especially if we wanna utilize our backfield full of young talents in Ivory, Goodson, Powell and McKnight within our run game and/or screen game; Edwards is by far, hands down, one of the strongest run blocking WR's in the game today. No brainer. Having a strong prospect in Hill develop not behind but alongside a larger WR such as Braylon Edwards could pay off moving forward as well.
