During a culture change in most settings (not just football), I think most human beings maintain previous cultures almost subconsciously, like muscle memory. The process of change gets slowed because of that resistance. What this looks like is a really effective way to instill a culture quickly in a team without a lot of influence from other regimes. A bunch of first and second term players with just enough veterans to illustrate the difference - and improvement - between the cultures of different organizations and this one. And also the difference in personnel. Saleh may have a very loose method of coaching techniques but he has very strict requirements for the type of players he needs on both sides of the ball and many of them are polar opposite of what we had on the roster, even in last year's draft class. I really do think that Joe was planning to go in a different direction as far as hiring a coach, his 2020 draft class speaks to that. But he probably fell in love with Saleh and plans changed in terms of personnel. No way around it.
I believe this is the reason for the turnover, previous Jets HC’s have all been 3-4 heavy blitz defense oriented, now it’s a 4-3 cover 3 zone defense. The offensive line was disregarded by Macagnan and now Joe is addressing the LOS on both sides of the ball. That being said, Jets have good pieces in place, Wilson (QB), Elija Moore(WR), Corey Davis(WR), Crowder(WR), Maye(S), Mosley(LB), Hall(CB), Becton(LT), AVT(LG), Quinnen(DT), Shaq Lawson(DE). We also have to hope some of the guys that are going into their second year step up and start being more productive. One more good draft should round out this team.
I totally agree with your first paragraph, but not your second. I am very optimistic about the Jets' future with JD as our GM and Saleh and company as our CS, but I think that realistically, our record is probably going to be bad this season, and there will still be a pretty high degree of turnover next season. We added a lot of players on D this offseason, some via FA, but most via low-round draft picks or UDFAs. How often do those really pay off? To not still have major turnover again next offseason means that most likely both Lawsons, Rankins, Kroft, Hardee, both Davises, McGovern, and maybe Moses and GVR, are back and healthy. It means that most of Huff, Zuniga, Wilson, both Carters, Nasirildeen, Sherwood, Hall, Echols, Dunn, Marshall, Jackson, Guidry, Pinnock, Becton, AVT, Mims, Moore, Clark, Mann, Ammendola, and maybe a few others I've forgotten pan out. Do you really think that JD could have been THAT great and that we could be that lucky? We still have roster holes, and need to upgrade depth. Our roster was in horrible shape. I think it could have been better than we thought, but probably not by much. IMO it's going to take another year or two to really build a roster that's a true contender. We can have a losing record this year (winning only 4-6 games), still have a lot of roster turnover next year, and still be on the right track and have taken great strides forward.
If all goes according to plan and we suffer no more serious injuries,I think we should definitely be much more competitive next season and have a real shot at the playoffs. I'm not so optimistic that one more draft should "round out this team," however. I guess it depends upon what you mean by "rounding out." If you mean just a playoff contender, then I agree, but if you're talking about a true contender for the Lombardi Trophy, then I disagree. I think it may take two more offseasons to get to that point.
I think the roster turnover was needed….not like we lost a bunch of great players…I’m concerned about our defense honestly as it’s not realistic to expect a bunch of late round and undrafted players to develop into a very good secondary. One or two may hit…probably not more than that. We are also starting two safeties at LB right? And young players at that. We lost our best pass rusher on a defense that relies on front four pressure for success. Saleh is going to coach his ass off for this defense to be competitive I think. Lawsons injury was a HUGE blow. I’m actually more optimistic on the offensive side as our WR group is strong, our RB group should be decent, our OL should be improved, and I’m high on Zach. I think our OL still needs work in next years draft…not done by any means, but should be better.
You’re going to think I’m nuts but I see this team winning 7or 8 games this season. The scheme alone is going to contribute more than we imagine. One of our RB’s is going to shine in this offensive scheme, I’m hoping it’s Carter but he will probably need a year to blossom. There is not going to be pressure on one guy to do all the work on offense. If Wilson can take care of the ball and stay healthy, this offense has 4 good receivers that are going to be a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. The defensive scheme will not leave the young DBs alone anymore like Greg Williams would do. The Jets will be in a lot of games this year because of their scheme and the players they have, this roster is not bare of talent like a lot of Jet fans think. I also believe 4 more quality picks by Joe will have this team in SB contention, if the Titans can play in the championship game with Derick Henry, Ryan Tanehill, and Corey Davis as their top 3 offensive weapons why can’t Jets do it next year with 2, 1st round picks and 2, 2nd round picks in the upcoming draft? I’m of the opinion that it will happen faster than people expect.
WOW! No, I don't think you're nuts. I actually LOVE it!!! I thought I was one of the most optimistic guys on this site, but you have me beat. If Lawson hadn't gotten hurt, I definitely thought that 7-8 games was doable. Now, I'm much less certain, but I certainly hope that you are right!!! I think keep Wilson healthy is key. I agree that our offense has a ton of potential from LaFleur to Wilson to our WRs, to our OL to our RBs. I think our D will be better than many here do, but I still think they'll have their ups and downs, youthful mistakes, even though I think the team will be well coached, well prepared each week and will be competitive. I hope that you're right about the schemes giving us a boost. I definitely think they will next year when the players know the schemes better and have a year's experience in them, much like Rodgers did his 2nd year with Matt LaFleur in GB. I would be absolutely ecstatic if we could be a SB conrtender next season.
Well I knew you couldn't be DWC because most of your other posts you were able to make your point in just a few sentences. I think some of the others were just kidding around though, DWC always liked to list just about the entire roster in multiple posts whether it was needed or not. Sometimes it's needed to show something like in your post, sometimes it's just just to fill space like DWC's posts
I think my optimistic guess was 7-9 wins and my more realistic guess was 5-6. I'm thinking with the loss of Lawson they'll be closer to the 5 but the schedule is not that rough so 8 wouldn't be that big a reach. 10 of the games the D faces Darnold, Jones X 2, Lock/Bridgewater, Burrow?, Tua X2, Hurts, Winston/Hill, and Lawrence with not much help and a good number of games the Jets don't have top D's to go up against so it could just mean they get a few wins we ordinarily wouldn't expect them to get.
Pretty sure that is just the 2019 roster so you can see who is no longer on the team, you just need to know who is left to see who is gone
While this season our defense might not look great, I am much less concerned that about since I think we easily be a top 5-10 defense in 2022. Lawson coming back plus 2022 being a supposedly epic cornerback class in puts us in a good position. Not to mention the $60 million or so we have to sign veterans. The offense on the other hand will need a year to gel. We got a new wide zone scheme and new additions to the OL, rookie QB, and a completely different receiver group all coming together for the first time. Next year we only need to add pieces like probably a tight end and possibly another offensive linemen or two, but the foundation will already be there. I am SO glad we didn't get a typical defensive coordinator that had to build "his defense" by blowing all of our best draft picks on defensive players when the offense has been a dumpster fire for the better part of decade.
Achilles can be tough…there is a chance Lawson may not be as good as he was, and there is also a chance he may never come back it was a huge blow…and we’ll need to go get a pass rusher and some corners next year, along with a right guard…can’t go into next year banking on a DE coming back from Achilles
