Hurricanes feed on themselves by drawing out the heat, energy and water vapor from warm ocean water. Think of it as a whirlpool when water is draining in a sink. A strong Hurricane is like a huge vacuum. It sucks humid hot air on one side and expels it on the opposite. If you see a classic hurricane the storm looks like it is spinning/wobbling. Anyway, not to get too complicated but it takes perfect conditions to create this cyclone effect. Dry air impedes the ability of the storm to absorb the moisture from the water. It will impede the cyclonic nature of the storm and weaken the motion that a storm needs to strengthen. Basically, it is like an athlete not drinking enough water and suffers from dehydration......Same concept in a way.
Actually lmao'ed my self silly on the second paragraph. To answer your first..and MURRELS question about dry air being sucked into this storm..here is what I have read..and pieced together. Going to be careful here because this will still be a wind driven astronomical flooding rain storm. The eye, as you mentioned, has about 10 hours to get its shit together or its not going to happen. As murrell mentioned, dry air is being sucked into this storm as if it made landfall...quite strange. There lies the 100 mph winds currently...and my guess is they really really had to look hard for those winds...probably more like low 90's. From a forecast standpoint..and this is going out on limb and dont listen to me...but this will, to a very small extent...bust. The only way the WIND devastation happens is that eye regains form and you see winds start to climb...even to 110. But the storm is such an abortion right now..so disorganized...I doubt it. I hope what I see...and what I HEAR...are correct. Regardless, millions will lose power...morons will drown...trees will fall on cars...etc..so Im not trying to make light of this...but this category 4 storm coming into NYC as a cat 2 storm? I doubt it now..and thats great news. The next 10 hours will tell the story.
Also, the reason I said the next 10 hours is because the path its on right now is taking it over incredibly warm waters. Anything can happen. To me...looking at the latest radar...for the first time in more than 24 hours..it does seem to getting its crap together a bit more..lets see what happens in the next 4 hours.
..............and no one will ever take the weather channel seriosly again. My family on eastern LI today witnessed long lines at gas stations,fights in the parking lots,fights over food in the supermarket etc. It is a real shame that media is allowed to do this. I was there for Gloria and Bob and numerous trop storms that were worse than this will be. They fucked up how it would hit here in SC on Monday,and now i guarantee they fucked up big time on this "armageddon" they have predicted for the northeast.

Hopefully, it moves inland rather than hug the coast where it can maintain an assemblance of strength..... It is a humongous storm at this point. Reading the blogs, the storm surge is going to be many times what is typical for a normal cat 1-2 storm. I hope those knuckleheads that refuse to leave barrier beaches and such are at a minimum, there is going to be quite a surge. I would think that LIPA and ConED are marshalling up a little army from power companies all across the country to deal wit the inevitable avalanche of power outages.............

LOL FEN...sorry...just stating facts...ty. TYPNEG, It was out of control up here today..and will be tomorrow too. I left work early and did the dumb thing of offering to my wife to get some stuff for the house. I actually, accidentally, got involved in a good ole fashion cat fight...over 1 % milk. I was asked to be a witness..and refused. The one woman gave me a look as if she was ready to rip my dress off. Anyway, I showed her the 11 items I had on my list that would take me..me...about 2 and a half hours to finish up..and that I had my own problems. Its been brutal everywhere you go...incredible lines at gas stations? as if when a hurricane comes..you are supposed to get in your car and drive around for 20 straight hours..then go home. As far as the build up? I cant really come down too hard on WC or any other stations predicting this stuff. The models did say one thing for 3 straight days and not one model screamed bullshit. Sooooo..tough spot to be in. And we could be sitting here in 36 hours saying that this is still a friggin nightmare..and that could still easily be the case up here. Weather Channel, as I mentioned yesterday? is surely guilty of taking this as their Superbowl..and running with it. Im not going to judge them with their forecasts or hysteria until Sunday Night..lets see how this plays out.
I hear you hobbes but when you look at his numbers..and I agree totally with them..65 to 75 is just below on the low side..and a cat 1 storm on the high side..they always thought FOR THE MOST PART, that this storm would be around a CAT 1 storm when hitting up north with gusts to near 100. I do believe when all said and done as I mentioned this afternoon, this will bust by about 10 to 15 MPH. With all the rain.. that much wind...I have no idea how this storm will be judged until tomorrow night at this time.
Yeah,it's not over til it's over. I guess with all the rain the NE has had,that could be a problem on it's own. I guess we'll see. I just can't believe that people will act that way in stores etc,as if LI has never seen a storm before.

Lets look at this logically. (NFL) Game was to take place Saturday aft. While Irene was dancing in North Carolina. The NFL moves the game to Monday, because this is a MFer of a storm, coming Sunday? Whose aftermath will allegedly leave.....Millions without power (to watch the Game) and blocked egress (to get to the game) on Monday?!?!?!

I think the reason is because of mass transit in NYC is shutting down at 5pm. Bloomberg even made a comment about the game saying something like people will be able to get to the game..but will have no way of using mass transit when they return home. Thats probably a small piece to the puzzle and Im sure your point is mixed in the loop also hobbes.
TO all fired up...I like it. When all is said and done...this does have the potential to be a major exaggerated situation. I still believe when you tally up the losses from power outages...major flooding...it will make some sense. But the critics..albeit on the mark if thats the case...will point to the wind baby..wheres the WIND!!
