Its not very likely at all that snow or a blizzard will be the big story here...that will be a Chicago thing..they will set records with this storm. The main problem with this storm for the nyc metro area will first be snow..but then ICE...and a lot of it. Combine the Ice, as TBJ mentioned, with a heavy snow pack, clogged drains...gutters that cant handle anymore...and throw some rain at it afterwards... This is going to be a friggin nightmare for my area at least. You cant find a sewer in my town. Everything is buried with snow. There has been little melting from the big blizzard and the last two storms. My front yard has almost 2 feet of snow and its solid. Long event..comes in two stages..starts off overnight Monday/Tuesday morning with snow...about 4-6...then a break...then heavy sleet...then heavy freezing rain..and for some..plain rain. Followed by an arctic blast that will last 2 days. This aint going to be pretty.
how far north is the rain/snow line? i'm in poughkeepsie.do you think i will get more snow than rain?
I'm in the bullseye of disaster. I love the snow and winter in general but an ice storm like this is making me nervous
Lately the thaw and re-freeze has been great for sledding. Have taken the kids out over the course of the last few weeks and the layer we're looking at now is pretty much hard-pack. Good times!
Looks like I'm going to start getting it at midnight here (central NY) and it's only going to get worse after that.
I love this weather chick. Ava Dinges, describing the latest hellstorm. http://www.accuweather.com/video/771399343001/winter-storm-to-cause-widespre.asp
I'm no jaywayne but this is what I've been seeing/hearing: There is a major cut off in the NYC metro area regarding rain, sleet, ice, and snow. Areas south and east of NYC will be seeing warmer temps so a wetter precipitation and majority of sleet. NYC and areas ~50 miles north/northwest will be seeing an ice storm once all of it is done. Monday night => Tuesday morning there will be an initial wave of snow. Roughly 3-6" across the tri-state, with higher amounts north of the city. There will then be a lull until about Tuesday night when the second, larger storm will hit. This storm will bring higher temperatures and about 1-2" of precipitation depending on your location. With snow ratios being about an inch of rain = foot of snow, people will see some kind of combination of rain, ice, snow, or sleet. It looks like a half foot of snow Tuesday night followed by a half inch of ice to cap the event off in my neck of the woods. I'm 10 miles northwest of NYC, so that's my forecast in a nutshell. edit: pics
So it looks like NyC will get some bad driving weather, but no school cancelations or anything. Just an annoying commute.
I think there will be severe local area flooding in and around NYC on Wednesday. We have a lot of standing snow and ice. On LI, Hicksville specifically, we have almost 3 feet of standing snow when you figure in the plowed stuff. That=3 inches of rain. Add another 1 to 2 inches of rain, near 40 degree temps, that's almost five inches of water with no where to go since the storm drains are clogged with ice and snow. Figure the LIRR will shut down on the evening commute, some subways will flood. The parkways which often flood may be OK... depends on if the storm drains remain clear. I suspect they will also get flooded. You could find a quarter inch of ice on your vehicle on Wednesday morning. Biggest issue for me is the concern over standing water with no where to go... except for my basement.
