That is incredible stuff Staff....After reading both your and Barrys post, I have been googling the history of that time period and its amazing. I truly had no idea. Great day to be posting this stuff. Here is some good reading about that time period: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_history_of_the_Philippines_during_World_War_II
the band of snow currently moving through ny state and penn seems to be holding together pretty well tonight...would not surprise me that rush hour tomorrow gets a bit tricky...not because we will get a deep amount of snow. Seems like the first snows of the year...its like nobody remembers how to drive in it. New learning experience. Would not surprise me that it comes down at a decent pace at some point that it causes a few problems for some tomorrow. The line comes through as snow then transitions to rain closer to nj to start..switching over to snow before 5am..and ends around 9am. Keep that in mind for rush hour.
Thanks jay,,,,yep I will be driving in the A M,,so I will leave myself more time to get to my destination
I was a history minor and WWII was always an area that intrigued me and even I didn't know the importance of that area. It should also be noted that the notorious and corupt Marcos family is from Leyte. Based on what my friend has told me there is now a much better police and military presence in Tacloban so rioting seems to have slowed however there is still a major shortage of food, clean water and medicine. She also told me the USS George Washington is on it's way and US marines are in Tacloban assisting with relief, they cleared the runway enough for a large aircraft full of supplies to land. She will be on her way in a few days to her home. There is a city to the north I mentioned the other day that started with a G, I believe it is called Guolian and they estimate all 50K residents are now homeless and who knows how many more lost their lives. That entire area is full of rural fishing villages so the death toll may never truly be known.
This should give a pretty good idea of the devestation http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-11-12/philippines-typhoon-transforms-tacloban-into-wasteland/5085222 It looks like Japan following the tsunami (which is essentially what hit the city) with a Cat 5 hurricane
Yes, there was a 7.1 quake last month but this morning there was a 4.5. Talk about areas of the world that are just prone to disaster.
Bingo Barry..you hit it on the head. Put that together with the poverty you mentioned and a disaster is multiplied by 100. Those pictures...I mean..my God. How does an area like that even begin to recover. Thanks for all the updates Barry...keep us updated on the family you have mentioned several times.
Throw in 20 active volcanoes including Mt Pinatubo and Mt Mayon which has erupted something like 40 times since the 1600's. My friend is heading to Tacloban in a few days so I don't know how much I'll be able to talk to her but I am worried that the diesease that is begining to spread will begin to kill survivors.
Yeah Barry...the disease stuff is worrisome. The amount of care these people need and are probably getting is slanted poorly Im sure. Keep us updated bud. On the local front here..and it pales to what is going on in that part of the world..the order of the day is cold fronts followed by above average temps...going into the 60's next week...but Im following a possible storm around thanksgiving that was there..then gone..but reappeared with several models. Will keep you updated.
Well apparently they're flying out as many people as can fit in those US jumbo cargo planes to Manilla. Supplies come in, people go out. Tacloban may no longer exist after all this
From what I am hearing apparently people did not understand the issue of storm surge. They are not unfamiliar with typhoons but never anything this large. The government told them storm surge but apparently that term is not a word that is common in the Philippines. Had they used tsunami or described it as a smiliar many many more people would have evacuated. Tacloban sits in between two different large bays and apparently they both met in the center of the city. I finally watched some Anderson Cooper last night and it is unreal what I saw. My friend is leaving Manila tomorrrow and taking a 19 hour bus ride to Tacloban to get her son and parents to take them to where she lives. They have been living in what remains of their house. I talk to her on Viber and FB but I don't know how much contact I'll have with her until she gets back to Manila on Tuesday. She said there is so much contamination with excrement and dead bodies but also dead livestock that she thinks the entire city will just be demolished and they'll have to start from scratch if they choose to rebuild. She said her family has told her it looks like an atomic bomb hit the city.
Sad Barry...very sad. Amazing what you mentioned about the lack of defining "storm surge". These storms..even Sandy that hits us...people get all caught up with wind speed when its the water that kills. Be it flooding or storm surge..its always the water that kills most. Sandy didnt even have wind gusts for the most part over 100 mph. Sustained winds were below hurricane force for the most part. Its almost always the water. Sure they can show buildings inland being destroyed but with notice, most people can protect themselves from winds for the most part. Water is a different animal...and storm surge...the eye coming on land which is about a 15 to 30 minute time frame...rising waters from 7 or 8 feet to over double that in that time frame..its a true killer. Again Barry...keep us updated and our prayers go out to all of the people there...and your friends families too.
Real quick here...for the 2nd straight day, several models are pointing at a possible system hitting our area a week from this Sunday...around the 25th/26th. Something to keep an eye on. I mentioned earlier around Thanksgiving but its probably about 48 hours later.
Fortunately she was able to use her connections to get on a C-130 to Tacloban so at least for now she gets to skip the bus ride. I might not hear from her for a few days though but if I hear anything obviously I'll post. I found it interesting that they don't know storm surge and all of a sudden the government would start using it. Many locals had said had they used tsunami the city would have been a ghost town as they have done many many drills for tsunami evacuations. Amazing to think how many lives might have been spared over a word.
Bolded part...holy crap. Can you imagine if they had just described that? How many people would still be alive. Incredible pick up Barry.
I have gotten my weekends wrong cbg...next weekend the possible storm...and thanksgiving is after that...mental lapse. 24/25..maybe a storm..maybe a strong cold front? Oops...lol..nice catch. Then Thanksgiving.
Thursday storms are always good,,,,I enjoy 3 day weekends  Keep us posted Jay and get your damn weekends straightened out
lol CBG...i keep thinking Thanksgiving is next Thursday. Right now...on the board..we have a possible storm next weekend..around the 25th...and a possible storm around Thanksgiving. I would say less than 30 percent on both...but models are showing something...but too far out to believe.
