I'm sold on this but: If Harbaugh accepts a position with the Jets, a move I would really like, one needs to assume that either Idzik gets fired or his responsibilities in the area of personnel and draft selection get significantly curtailed a la Tanny. That is the only way a guy like Harbaugh would agree to come yet I can see some major friction forming if Idzik remains. Not a good start. The timing of the selection could present a couple of additional stumbling blocks associated with our leadership demonstrated inability to understand football strategy. Concern #1: To be successful, this move needs to be ironed out right up front and it would require for Woody to make the decisions quickly and swiftly, giving the new regime plenty of time to get their team in place and their draft strategy ready to rock and roll. My biggest concern in this area is the dynamics between Woody's slow and methodical financial approach to change, Idzik role moving forward, and if a new GM is needed how long would that take and how would it play in the face of Harbaugh and his decision making process. Concern #2: Is Harbaugh a better coach than a talent evaluator? Not sold on his current selection of QB at SF, and he did shoot himself in the balls by blackballing a couple of superb players at Stanford like Sherman and Baldwin, now in Seattle kicking the shit out of SF. Jury is still out on this, but his outstanding coach capability is sometimes trumped by his ego. Concern #3: The deal breaker might be the QB selection process. Harbaugh or any savvy coach might want to move up and guarantee that either MM or Winston are there for him to pick, or go to free agency and grab someone he can trust. If Izik is there and pushes the competition mantra with Geno this might be a non starter. Selecting the best coach might turn out to be highly dependent on how we finish the season. As much as I hate to admit it, tanking the rest of the way could be better for us in selecting a coach. Making a change at HC and potentially GM is inevitable, and the strategy as to when and who to fire is paramount to who we can get. A compromise in this area would be totally unacceptable. Woody has his work cut out for him, can he deliver in this most critical area?
I am so fucking sick and tired of hearing that, so done with that canned bush league naive bullshit. If he starts talking about that again I fully intend on sending Woody a strongly worded letter. _
Agree. I was by no means advocating that. Simply reading into the current politics. The concept has its merit in most positions but it's way overblown and ineffective when it comes to building a franchise around a potential star QB. You don't put him on the field to compete for the job, you groom him to develop into the position and help him grow to succeed for the most important job there is in football. Jim Harbaugh would be ideally suited to take M Mariotta under his wing and build him into a star in the NFL in a year or two. We can pick up a "hold the fort guy" till MM is ready to roll and kiss the competition mantra good riddance when it comes to a our future QB.
The question is what really are the problems between Harbaugh and the 49ers GM and owner. Are there just differences on personnel or is it personal. I wonder what Mangini's position on all of this is. He is their tight ends coach. Is he pro Harbaugh or on the side of the front office. He in the past has been known as a rat.
Harbaugh's teams have the same problem the Jets have--great defense but poor offenses. He has a ton of weapons in SF on offense but they can't score. Ryan lost a few AFCCG but Harbaugh has lost a few NFCCG and a SB. If the Jets part with Ryan what we need is an offensive guru like Chip Kelley. Edit: I'm not sure Harbaugh is a better coach than Ryan. Look at the talent that Harbaugh has on both sides of the ball. The Jets have no one like Aldon Smith, Justin Smith or Patrick Willis. On offense Frank Gore and Colin Kaepernick are better than any Jet. Put those players on the Jets and we win a SB.
True but the Niners could've very easily beaten the Giants in that NFCCG and they were within a non-holding call of winning that Super Bowl vs. the Ravens. In short, they were within a whisker of possibly winning 2 SBs.
Harbaugh is 43-16-1. Rex is 44-48. Harbaugh also made three conference championship games (not two) and actually won one of them. They aren't even remotely comparable.
