    PFF Grade Comparison:
    2011:
    Hunter:
Pass Block: Ranked 73 out of 76 tackles, graded -20.6
Run Block: Ranked 58 out of 76 tackles, graded -6.4

    Smith (6 games):
Pass Block: Ranked 42 out of 76 tackles, graded -3.2
Run Block: Ranked 34 out of 76 tackles, graded -1.5

    ~~

You tell me that's not average or, at the very worst, slightly below average.

And these stats are for total OL, not just RTs

Realistically though, how does this solve our depth issue? I mean I'm happy that Hunter is gone but how does Smith give us the depth we need if something happens to Howard who let's admit has never played every down in an NFL season before. I still think we need a veteran here...

I love this deal, not because I love Smith, but because I hate Hunter. I don't think this is a case where we just solved our RT position, but Smith does have talent, and maybe we can coach him up, maybe we can't. But we already knew we couldn't do anything with Hunter, so might as well try with Smith, and hope that it might be the scheme that was holding him back.

Great trade, just to see Hunter off the team.

I guess I should clarify, because I did assume Rex was straight up lying.

IMO, the reason I assumed Rex was lying was because of the diminished return he got in the trade. I could understand if a great trade came along that Rex couldnt refuse, so he had to pull the trigger. But that is not what happened.

He swapped this guy for someone who also shares the moniker of "one of the worst RT's in the league." That leads me to believe Rex was willing to swap the guy basically for a bag of footballs. If you believe what Rex said in his press conference about the role Hunter would play this year, that role (with Hunter in it) would seem to be much more valuable to the Jets than a backup, bust RT who has twice the amount of guaranteed money.

You are right. It doesn't mean Rex was lying. I just have a hard time believing he was not, based on the value he was willing to accept in return.

I don't know the grades show Smith was better than Hunter so there is that. Also, the Jets after the game realized they would rather have some OL depth than an extra blocking TE since Brick was limping. There are a lot of options. Now if Tanny said what Rex said, straight up lie. Tanny lies through his teeth. Rex was probably stretching the truth to keep Hunter's morale up, but I doubt he was straight lying.

You better read the whole comment Ryan made before you call someone a liar. He did say they would continue to evaluate available talent at right tackle. I don't think he said anything out of the norm.
Are you naively thinking he should use the "I am unhappy with Hunter and we are looking to trade him line?" This is the NFL not Sunday Church.
Or perhaps the Bills line "we are very happy with our QB group"

Couldn't care but most teams do this. They say oh I expect this person to start just incase they can't get a replacement and they do stay and start. Its better than saying this person is a problem we are looking for a replacement and then when you can't find a replacement you have a disgruntled player who feels like you just settled for him.

You guys are crazy we just traded an old terrible tackle that everyone wanted cut two days ago for a former #2 overall pick.... Straight up!!! This is a great trade Jason smith might do wonders in our simplified blocking system and the kid has a ton of potential. Perhaps a change of scenery is all he needed to be successful. And it seems like a one year deal so if it doesn't work out we will get our replacement next offseason.

Perhaps this was the reason why he is traded, even though JETS are paying more for Smith:

Last straw? Unruly fans got on Hunter late in last night's game; he was restrained by Ducasse, according to source. #Jets

Smith sucks, but we just watched Wayne Hunter get dominated by the Panthers fucking backups last night. We could trade Hunter for my 300 pound cousin and it would be an upgrade.

I feel bad for Rams fans.

I'm happy about the trade but still think Howard deserves a legitimate shot at the starting position.

It's a game because this guy has a concussion history and he's played i think 26? out like 46 games or something. Also maybe a change in scenery will help

All these Jets fans that are talking about Rex not telling the truth are trolling. Everyone knows that every coach in the NFL lies.

Trading Hunter for anything more than a used condom is a deal we couldn't refuse.
