Not to say Smith is good but there's a big difference between playing with Moore next to him and whoever STL had. Smith will be our 5th if not 4th best Lineman(If he surpasses Slauson).....Smith was at times expected to be THE best lineman in STL and took on the best rusher on the opposing side. Its a much better situation for Smith and if he can't take advantage of this then I don't know what else to say. Sparano is considered one of the better lineman coaches so surely he knows what he's doing with this.
Correct. Smith has no leverage. All thats on the books for him next year is 750k. He had to be on a roster to make 11 million and thats not happening no matter what. He'd renegotiate. Would be nice as a guard as Kurt The Jet Fan suggested. Which is very interesting considering our guard situation after this season.
Exactly. If he plays decent, Tanny will try to keep him around for a while on a cheap deal. But I think he gets cut after 2012 as I don't expect all these busts to work out for the Jets. We got the Gholston Karma in the shape of Maybin.
Releasing Hunter would have required picking up someone to put on the roster anyway and that player would have cost at least the minimum salary of 400K. For the extra 1.1MIL they are taking a shot on seeing how they can coach up Smith whose contract is essentially expiring after this season. After last night you really couldn't trust Hunter on the field anymore.
Slauson has proven himself to be a reliable starter. Not a superstar, of course, but serviceable starter that has improved over time. And I haven't seen much from Howard, but I would still pick him over Smith judging solely on that one Howard start against 20+ Smith starts. And as for playing next to Moore, Hunter had played there and we all know how great that was. Its not like Moore would leave his assignment and help Hunter. Smith will be our #6 OL behind the 5 starters until proven.
WFH was gone after 2012. The way he played, Im sure Jets would have found several better than WFH, who allowed 2.5 sacks in one half of the pre season. It could have been a roster spot better utilized, albeit the minimum contract. It could have been the difference between keeping Danny Woodhead.
Wayne Hunter was the last person to board his flight to St. Louis. All the other passengers blew by him.
The flight marshall was a happy camper when WFH couldn't block the isle as passengers walked by him with ease. No problems were reported by other passengers.
dude you're really starting to piss me off. stop complaining or go like a new team. this trade isn't breaking the bank and it got rid of a guy that everyone in NYC wanted to kill. i dont care if smith is worse (which he isn't statistically), as long as WFH is gone i dont care
Has anyone actually come out and said that Smith is being brought in as the backup as of yet or is it just speculation that Howard is starting at this point?
Speculation, completely. I see Smith competing for the starting RT job. Howard has played 1 good preseason game -- 1. We don't know who is better at this point.
They will compete for the spot. But early word is back up: Manish Mehta @MMehtaNYDN Jets plan to use Jason Smith in the same role as Wayne Hunter (backup), Austin Howard will remain the starting RT. #nyj
We don't know but I would like to see the job stay with Howard until he clearly isn't good enough. We lost a whole season to WFH last year and I'd hate to see Smith come in and play worse than what Howard showed while the organization sticks with the bigger paycheck. If you ask a guy to do the job and he does it for you what else can you ask for besides keep doing it?
i am concerned... who will be the next guy that the ganggreen forum attacks? schotty is gone, smith is hurt, hunter is gone... hmm this will be interesting.
Definitely santonio holmes is next on the scapegoat list. Sent from my VS840 4G using Tapatalk 2 Beta-5
I know all the SOJFs are criticizing this move. I don't even have to read the 10 pages to tell you that. I'm glad he's gone. Hunter sucked against the 2s was flat out terrible against the 1s. This is a good move. There will be more competition and our line will be deeper. Plus we have a backup plan in case Howard gets hurt. Before this, it was back to Hunter, which means we're in trouble.
