Bowles just walked back that he will not be taking over playcalling of the defense. 3 games in the Jets are already dysfunctional. Who is running this team?

To be fair, the team was coming off a short week and there isn't much video out there of Mayfield in a pro style offense. How much time should you really devote to backup QB prep with just 4 days to prepare?

Now that Rosen has been named starter in Arizona, all 4 of the big 4 QB prospects are starting for their teams. Should make for some good drama, especially since the Jets play most of them.

Bowles says it’s a “teachable moment” for the “young player” Adams...

Another example of why Bowles will never win!! When a young player is frustrated with losing and admits they failed, that’s not something to “teach” out of him!!

A winning coach responds with “Adams is frustrated but he’s right, we all need to be better prepared to execute. Players, coaches, everyone.”

I'm sorry, I just don't understand how you don't prepare for all possibilities, and Mayfield coming in to the game WAS a possibility, even before the game. This was the #1 pick, and Taylor had not been doing great. Even if there wasn't much pro video of him there WAS lots of his college career. Moreover, do you build a defense to only play against one type of QB? Of course not, you face lots of different types of QBs, so how much different would facing Mayfield be? Was it SO different that Bowles and Rodgers couldn't make adjustments to stop him? Again, of course not, so the failure to adjust is squarely on Bowles and the CS, and this is supported by Adams's initial comments, despite being walked back later.

taylor is a different QB then mayfield. they had 2 practices to install a gameplan and the gameplan worked. it was made to force tyrod to sit in the pocket and make throws and not be able to use his legs. and it worked dam good. him getting a concussion can't be planned for it. nothing wrong with that. the issue was the lack of halftime adjustments after they knew taylor was out and baker was in

I don't know what the norm is with a short week. Depending on the norm, I may be able to forgive the zero gameplan for Mayfield.

I cannot forgive zero adjustments to Mayfield while he continued to gash the defense.

What you're saying is that they have no capacity to change their game plan if it stops working. That's ludicrous! And this is exactly what I and others have been saying about Bowles all along: he shows no ability to make in-game adjustments. This shouldn't be an issue in his 4th season.

yes that is what i'm saying, i'm also saying it's not just bowles. u replace him and keep the same OC/DC and nothing changes except maybe they get yelled at more behind the scenes.

the HC conundrum is because fans don't understand the game and what coaches do. It also an "easy fix" in a fans eyes. instead of believing the problem runs deeper then 1 person they feel all the failure for a team is tied to 1 person and replacing him makes everything magically better. not only is that 100% wrong and just plain crazy, it's been proven time and time again that teams that take that route get stuck in an endless loop of changing coaches setting the franchise back years and being stuck at the bottom of the barrel. If you watch all the games every sunday you'll see even the best coaches fail at this at times. hell DET made 0 adjustments as we stomped them, NE made 0 adjustments as Det stomped them and Bill is a HOF coach with 5 SB wins. the steelers made 0 adjustments their 1st 2 weeks in a loss/tie and tomilin is considered a great coach. not only that but he has a player holding out and another one skipping practices. 2 of the 3 highest paid players on his team. There is no magically fix or 1 person at fault. It starts with a fundamental change and a rebuild. we are on year 2 of a rebuild. it takes time to make the shift

Don't use "straw man arguments" here. Don't put words in my mouth. I certainly don't think, nor do I think most people feel, that ONE person is at fault, and just replacing him will "make everything magically better". That said, as HC he IS where the "buck stops", and moreover it's impossible to replace all those at fault, so the "efficient" solution is to replace the CS. And BTW: I also never suggested that we simply replace Bowles - the entire CS is up for evaluation. Of course if they fire Bowles during the season they're not going to fire everyone because they have to have SOMEONE to run the team, but at the end of the season the entire CS should be evaluated.

If you're "stuck the the bottom of the barrel for years and years," shouldn't you try everything, including changing HCs to try and escape?

Year Record Finish (Regular / Post Season) Coach
    2017 11-5-0 1st -- NFC West 0-1 - Lost Wild Card Playoffs Sean McVay Roster / Stats
    2016 4-12-0 3rd -- NFC West -- Jeff Fisher,
    John Fassel Roster / Stats
    2015 7-9-0 3rd -- NFC West -- Jeff Fisher Roster / Stats
    2014 6-10-0 4th -- NFC West -- Jeff Fisher Roster / Stats
    2013 7-9-0 4th -- NFC West -- Jeff Fisher Roster / Stats
    2012 7-8-1 3rd -- NFC West -- Jeff Fisher Roster / Stats
    2011 2-14-0 4th -- NFC West -- Steve Spagnuolo Roster / Stats
    2010 7-9-0 2nd -- NFC West -- Steve Spagnuolo Roster / Stats
    2009 1-15-0 4th -- NFC West -- Steve Spagnuolo Roster / Stats
    2008 2-14-0 4th -- NFC West -- Scott Linehan,
    Jim Haslett Roster / Stats
    2007 3-13-0 4th -- NFC West -- Scott Linehan Roster / Stats
    2006 8-8-0 2nd -- NFC West -- Scott Linehan Roster / Stats

Take the Rams for example. In the 10 years prior to last year they sucked - "at the bottom of the barrel". They only had 3 different HCs, I assume trying to follow the "recipe" you prescribe, but what was their reward for that? Continued sucking. Until they changed HCs! Continuity for continuity's sake is no answer.

As to the HC s that also failed to make adjustments, first, Detroit's HC is brand new and I would expect him to be overmatched. BB has often made adjustments, and I doubt he didn't try to do that. Likewise Tomlin. I didn't see those games so I can't say whether they tried, but from what I DID see in the Browns game was no adjustments were made.

But again, this isn't about one game, or even part of one season, it's three full seasons plus what we've seen so far. And also, it's not that I don't hold Macc at fault, or the players. But you're saying that they shouldn't upset the entire apple cart, so wouldn't firing Macc as well be essentially doing that? For my part, I would be okay with that if there was someone who I thought was better than Macc available. If not, at a minimum they should replace Bowles, and possibly hire a Pres. of Football Ops. What they CAN'T do is continue the status quo.

I didn't put words in your mouth at all dude. take a chill pill. i said in general that's how many fans see it. We lose, they get emotional and blame the figurehead thinking if he is replaced all will be better. then that happens over and over again and teams suck for decades. just like the jets have.

you can't take the rams at all. your doing exactly what you say i accused you of which i didn't and applying it to one team. The rams are just stacked with talent. Mcvey is getting the credit but Les Snead (their GM) deserves the credit. and he's been with the team since 2012. You think mcvery would do anything with the browns roster? or the bills roster? I could coach the rams to the playoffs. you probably could too. they are just stacked. Mcvery took over a team with Goff in his 2nd year in the NFL as a 3rd overall QB who is playing great. a top 3 RB in gurley, a good o-line, a good WR group led by brandon cooks now, and a defense that is just stacked. they have talib and peters at CB, donald and suh on the d-line. they likely have 7-8 probowlers this year. so lets look at snead

snead was a scout for the jags in the mid to late 90s when they built a 12-4 team and went to the AFC champ game. Then he was with the falcons as a scout from 1997-2009 a team that was stacked with talent. never made a SB but always made playoffs and competed. then he was promoted to director of pro personal and did that 2 years in ATL. then in 2012 he took the GM job for the rams. it's taken him 6 years to build the team they have now. they are in year 7 and a real SB contender.

so all your doing really is not making any point. lets look at some coaches prematurely fired

coughlin - took the jags to an AFC champ game, they had a down year and they fired him. he went to the giants. about 4 years in he was close to being fired again but they gave him 1 more year, he rewarded them with a SB. he went on to get a 2nd one as well. then they pushed him out the door and he went to jax not as the HC but a front office job. they are now a contender again

Bellichick - do i need to say more? cleveland fired him, now he has 5 SB rings and 8 SB appearances with the pats

Right now the jets are in year 2 of a full rebuild, we have the potential FQB, we have the young talent but we are building. it's that simple. if mac lands a pass rusher and some o-line help in the offseason, then yeah bowles has 1 more year (2019) to get us to the playoffs then i'd say it's ok to move on from the coaching staff but mac has been here since 2015. this is only year 4 for him. it took snead 6 years to build what he has in LA right now. and mac is doing a good job of building this team even though some fans seem to differ. I'm all for a new coach in 2020 if we can't make the playoffs in 2019. but this year is simply a building year and fans getting upset over that need to chill out. Rome wasn't built in a day

McVay put Goff in a position to succeed, Fisher did not. Of course you need talent to win, but utilizing that talent is just as important.

Truth be it should never be an issue.

Todd Bowles is (or was) considered a top flight defensive coach.

The ease in which a rookie qb (in his 1st game!) was able to carve up our defense was brutal...and a pretty revealing indictment on Bowles failure as a head coach.

All the other bullshit surrounding this team points his inability as a leader.

that's not really a fair assessment. fisher had him for 1 year as a rookie and he only stared less then half the season. You can't expect too much of a rookie QB nor can you blame their struggles on a HC.

If the Rams were confident that Fisher could develop Goff, they wouldn't have fired him during the season right after giving him an extension.

maybe maybe not. who knows but it was snead who put him in a position to succeed. not mcvey. You don't think bowles and darnold would be much better off with the rams o-line and gurley? mcvey was given the keys to a ferrari and bowles was given the keys to a civic and people are mad bowles can't win that race.

They'd be better off, but Bowles' tendency of coaching to not lose instead of coaching to win wouldn't change IMO.

i get that. I've been critical of him at times as well but the things people blame bowles for at times here is crazy. as i said IMO he has until 2019 to make a playoff. our 2019 roster should be pretty legit. if he doens't then it's time to move on to a new coach in 2020
