Right now Mahomes is a top 5 QB and Darnold is a bottom 5 QB. Yeah Mahomes has great coaching and a great roster, whereas Darnold has crap, but it would be insane to choose Darnold over Mahomes as things stand now.
It's tough, because we don't know how Mahomes would have done on this roster and with this coaching staff. Most likely, he would be similar to Darnold this year. On the other side, Darnold in Andy Reid's offense, with the weapons the Chiefs have, would probably be unstoppable like Mahomes. Plus Mahomes had the year to learn behind Alex Smith. Your main point is right tough: If the Chiefs offered Mahomes for Darnold, you take it. Going back in time and taking Mahomes over Adams becomes complicated to discuss because it changes so much. You gain Mahomes, lose Adams, don't need to trade up for Darnold so keep your picks. Obviously don't use the #6 overall pick on a QB, so fill another need. Still need a safety though to replace Adams, but it seems like the right decision from a football viewpoint. Many Jets fans are happy with Darnold and Adams, but it is interesting to think about.
You're right that we don't know how Mahomes would've done as a Jets rookie, and we don't know how Darnold would do as a Chiefs sophomore. But since it's near impossible do better than Mahomes has done, my guess is Darnold wouldn't be playing as well as Mahomes is.
Darnold could play in the league 15 years he may never have a 11 game stretch like Mahommes has had so far in 2018. Heck I doubt 99% of HOF or future HOF qbs have. Maybe Brady back in 2007 maybe. He's making a serious run at Manning's single season TD record.
Mahomes would be struggling here too. It's been a tough year, but the Jets have decent pieces. Give Darnold some solid coaching and we will see.
I was so wrong about him. He won me over when I saw him going all out against Buffalo despite the fact the team was getting destroyed. Watching him in the first half against New England all I can say is WOW!! He is becoming everything a team dreams of when they select a player that high in the draft.
If Leonard Williams were in the physical condition Adams is in, if he played with the energy Adams plays with, if he played with the motor Adams plays with he too would've been the guy we hoped we were getting. Sadly that isn't the case.
I wonder how long before he starts agitating for a move away to a team that competes? I could see him slipping his number to Bill at the end of the game "call me"
At this point he seems to be the only player on the defense who gives a damn and is playing with any energy. Whatever else there is to say about him (poor tackling, being overaggressive), that puts him way ahead of everyone else on the defense, including Williams.
he is the ONLY playmaker on the defense. the problem is that safety is not a W-L changing position. jets have picked that high 3 years in a row and the only pick that is a franchise impact pick is darnold. and right now he is just another guy with mayfield being the top performer - at this point..... the other positions that are IMPACT positions for a team are OLB/DE and LT. These are the picks that need to be made near the top of the draft if at all possible.
It would be nice if he'd put all that effort into his tackling. That "attempt" he made near the goalline on one of the Pats' late TDs was just unacceptable. Wrap up like you're taught to and bring the ball carrier down instead of launching yourself at him and trying to make the big highlight reel hit.
