Oh my god! Gholston hasn't made 26 sacks yet and we paid him #6 pick money! What the fuck are we gonna do?!? This has Ryan Leaf written all over it! We're fucked!
Yeah, it's nothing special... but if you consider that he was doing nothing against the same talent a couple weeks ago, maybe it IS an indicator of improvement.
just the preseason of his 2nd year he was coached by the wrong guy last year (Belichek is spreading his disciples like a disease through the NFL). Gholston is getting better. The Potential is there, give him this year and next, he could be pretty solid.
Those knocking Gholston after tonight's game are either blind or ridiculously stubborn. He played well tonight. He had an NFL sack and numerous pressures, plus he strung out some runs, made some tackles and was around the ball. He can't win with some of you people. If he did nothing tonight, he sucks. He plays well and he still sucks because it wasn't against the first string O. He improves week to week and all we hear is that he will suck once the season starts or that he might be OK, but not #6 pick OK. How about we give the guy a season to play with a coach that only will put him on the field and give him a chance, but will make him a better player. If Gholston gets a sack every other game, he will be on his way. The way Mangini wasted him last year, this is his rookie year.
we can not change how much he is getting paid or where he was drafted. the only thing we can do is hope he improves (which he has been showing especially the last 2 games). and support him since he is a member of the new york jets. although the latter seems to be really difficult to some of you.
I fear for Sanchez if that is the type of stance you are taking towards an improving player. Lets not forget that the Sutton/Mangini duo didn't do much at all for our defensive stars sans Revis/Jenkins. Given that he has already shown drastic improvement from last year I'll give him a year in a real defensive system.
Well said JWWS. I think if he continues to improve and shows up in his regular season starts most people will lay off. It's difficult to stop the hate train when it's full speed ahead and almost everyone is on board. Sadly, patience isn't something you really see much of when it comes to player development. I'm guilty of it too sometimes.
Also - We can appreciate Gholston coming along AND at the same time love the way Westerman has played. Its all good. The development of both these guys shows us that this coaching staff is good at what they do and that if our guys keep working hard and focussing we can develop a very good Defense. You don't need to have 11 all stars. You need guys who know what their job is and who are able to execute and play with intensity.
Gholston looked good tonight, he looks like a killing machine but doesn't have an outside fire, but after he got ahold of Kolb it looked like a Cannibal that took his first bite, and wants more
Tonight Gholston saw action in 3/4 of the game which was mostly against 2nd & 3rd tier guys. Gholston unmassed 2 tackles, 1 sack and a few QB pressures. Westerman played 1/4 of the game and had 2 tackles, 1 sack and 1 Forced Fumble. Advantage goes to the minimum wage player signed as a FA. I predict that Westerman who will play less time, will have more tackles and sacks this season than the over priced pussy we drafted #6 overall.
One more point from a Gholston hater; All these guys played less time tonight and had better stats, but at least two will be unemployed come saturday. Not to mention if you add all their annual salaries together it wouldn't equal 1/4 of what Gholston will make this season. What a turd, a big Mangini turd. J. Ihedigbo had 8 tackles K. Cummings had 6 tackles and 1 sack D. Coleman had 5 tackles R. Pitoitua had 5 tackles J. Trusnik had 4 tackles and 1 sack M. Kroul had 3 tackles and 1 sack
Both show continuous improvement which is a good thing for depth and the futur. Those who still rip VG when he has a good game should jump off the " popular internet opinion bus" and actually watch the game
Speaking of Westerman - he looks very fluid for a backer. I can see him starting in 2 years if his progress is continuous. He can suffer no setbacks such as injuries or struggling with rising up the depth chart and facing better opponents. his LB versatility is a beautiful thing. I'd like to see him become something for this team because it would balance out the monetary value for him and VG as of right now.
I think Rex is going to develop Westerman and Murrell. Murrell looked great tonight off the edge blitzing. Westerman has that size/speed and like you said he's extremely fluid in the hips for a guy that size. I don't know what they will for the four weeks pace is out, but I expect to see multiple fronts with 4 lineman and things like that.
I have been very critical of Gholston, but to say I'm a 'hater' would be saying that I'll never admit to when he does well - which is pretty much what you are admitting. So it's not surprising that you would collect a bunch of box stats and make such a pathetically weak argument. I would guess that you didn't even watch the game, actually. And I bet I'd be right. Even though VG was playing against a second string defense, I think the second stringers from Philly are probably a bit better than, say, the second stringers from the shitty Rams - the same Rams that kicked Gholston around in PS week 1. Last night I saw him make a lot of good pressures, aggressively fight out of blocks, and apply probably the first very effective pass-rushing move I've ever seen him make. Last night gave me some hope that he will develop into a decent player. That's not to say that he will ever justify the 6th overall pick (kind of like how I like Brick but know he'll never live up to the 4th overall pick) or the amount of money that he's making, but I'm not paying his salary, so I'm not going to cry over his paycheck. If he can be an integral part of a top 5 defensive unit, I don't give a shit where we drafted him. He's certainly not starting caliber right now, so it pisses me off that he's going to be starting, but I have some hope that Ryan knows this and isn't going to rely that heavily on #50 right out of the gate. He has given me some modicum of hope, which is what I have been demanding all offseason.
