It's an interesting attempt by the Jets. I don't now that we've ever seen a team try to convert a DT to OLB. I'm going to give Rex the benefit of the doubt here.
i dont know why everyone is freaking out like this is a project see what the texans did with mario williams 2 years ago our 3-4 is prob going to look like this coples - rush linebacker harris & davis - inside linebackers pace - olb richardson - de ellis or garay - nt mo wilks - de passing downs coples - de wilks & richardson - dt's barnes - de harris & davis - Lbers our 3-4, 4-3, 46 are really the same thing besides some players line up differently
If anything I think Coples will play OLB on run downs. He makes sense there in those situations b/c he's a hard guy to get around w/ his wingspan & closing ability. Additionally when he gets his arms extended & locates the ball he is an awfully hard guy to block. That will serve him well when he plays out in space & is asked to set the edge.On pass rushing situations I think you'll see him used in a lot of 1 & 3 gap situations. I see this more as a base defense move than anything else. Coples hasn't been great in base 5 technique looks. He's at his best in space or in 1 gap situations. Jets need Coples play making ability on 1st & 2nd down..they may have just figured out how. As for Richardson, I think he's gonna be his own guy completely. He's very good at penetration..possibly even better than Wilk. He has the ability to make an impact early. It'll be curious to see how he does in the 5 gap when he's asked to anchor.
I think Coples could excel at rush linebacker. He's quick enough to get upfield, and strong enough to command double teams against lesser offensive tackles.
Be it what it may DT or OLB this is going to be a freakish defense for a long time. Can wait to see them all in action. Go Jets
This seems weird.. Mike pettine will prob be using Mario Williams the same way with the bills like well use coples The same for marcel Darius = mo wilks Many Lawson = calvin pace Anyway, I'm pretty excited on how we're goin to deploy coples, he was really starting to turn up at the end of the season playing very aggressive, if he stays motivated he can become a very freaky player
I'm more excited to see Richardson at NT in the 46 with Wilk and Coples covering the guards. Someone is getting to the QB quick.
I tried moving Kenrick Ellis to linebacker in Madden last year, if that counts for anything. I was thinking since there were a new physics engine, maybe if I got a fat guy running fast enough he'd just bowl over a smaller blocker. Sadly this did not work, and Ellis just fell on his face.
This is awesome, I completely called this months ago and everyone said I was nuts and that Q cant play OLB...look at how big Suggs is and how often Suggs drops in coverage....
Lol, I've been taking Coples into coverage recently on 3rd downs in Madden. I have like 15 career interceptions with him already. If he plays in real life like I use him in Madden he'll be a beast. No but seriously, I know he won't be in coverage, but I do think that he'll excel at OLB, especially if Rex thought of it. Also, I don't want to see Pace on the field. If Coples is one of the OLBs then Barnes better be the other. I think that kid is going to show he's been underused.
It did seem kind of like the OLB position was ignored in the draft. I'm guessing this is the reason why and also the pick of Richardson makes more sense now. Coples can play DE and DT, hopefully he's quick enough for OLB. I could see him being a great run stopper, but I doubt we'll see him in coverage that often.
it'll probably work as well as Gholston's move there. Another idiotic example of Rex trying to fit square pegs into the round holes of HIS system, instead of using a player's strength. Coples, Richardson, and Gholston probably would have better playing in a 4-3.
Per an ESPN bulletin he confirms he is making the change..that doesn't sound like it means only now and then.
You realize Rex wasn't the one who moved Gholston to OLB, right? WTF did you want him to do with that turd?
