very good pickup...started a lot for miami this year, is primarily a blocking back which is perfect since we now have 3 rushers of various sizes otherwise. 3 offseason moves, 3 starters. Awesome
I have a feeling this site is not too reliable. I would think we would have heard about it from at least 1 other source/site. Maybe we will get Barnes, and maybe we are indeed close to signing him, but I can't believe we already signed him and did not hear it from 1 other site.
It's Official - Barnes Signed Done deal - the Jets website is reporting the Barnes signing. Again, what's not to like, assuming he wasn't too costly.
That's right, he's signed, sealed and delivered. We needed a body at FB and got one. I hope the days of spending a 3rd round draft pick on a fullback (Askew) are permanently gone.
Jets signed FB Darian Barnes to an undiscosed contract. Barnes is young at 27 and big at 6-2/241. It still wouldn't be a surprise to see New York add a fullback in the late rounds of April's draft. FB Barnes Added to the Backfield Published: 03-08-07 By Jets PR Department Regular Contributor Article Permalink: http://www.newyorkjets.com/articles/fb-barnes-added-to-the-backfield The New York Jets announced today the signing of fullback Darian Barnes to a contract. The announcement was made by Jets’ General Manager Mike Tannenbaum. Barnes, going into his sixth season in the NFL, played in all 16 games (six starts) for the Miami Dolphins in 2006, recording three receptions for 22 yards. Barnes originally entered the NFL in 2002 as a rookie free agent with the New York Giants out of Hampton University. He has played in 61 games, while making 22 starts in five seasons as a member of the Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Dallas Cowboys.
How is he a starter? He played in 16 games last season but only started 6...and has 5 career carries!! He better be able to block.
He's a decent FB who can block - an improvement over Askew and roughly the same age. As long as the bank wasn't broken (which I'm sure it wasn't), it's a nice signing.......I don't see the Jets drafting FB this year as someone above mentioned
I don't know about that. If there is a Lorenzo Neal in the 3rd round, I say draft him. He is a big reason why LT has the stats he does. Hell if there is a Neal in the draft I wouldn't care if they used a 1st rounder. What I hope is the days of spending and reaching in the 3rd round for a mediocre FB like Askew are over.
http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/articles/show_permalink/fb-barnes-added-to-the-backfield Don't know if its been posted for sure, but don't know why it hasn't been confirmed. I'm never the first to post anything especially when I think I'm the first to hear the news, but here are the details in the link.
Yea, but the point is, Lorenzo Neal was an undrafted rookie before blossoming into who he is today. You can bottom feed from a draft standpoint and get a guy that can open holes for the back.
I can't understand all the hysteria about fullback. It's quite possibly the most marginal position on the field. It's way overblown because the press had a hard-on for Lorenzo Neal this year. Well, Neal is so good that he's been on six teams throughout the course of his storied career. -X-
