That part I bolded is right on the money...as is the rest of the post. I guess thats my point. In certain ways its a weird roster that makes me scratch my head. You have high priced free agent pick ups (Jenkins, Pace to name a few) that are truly in their prime and will probably not be there by the time Sanchez hits his stride. That would be fine if the Jets were a patient team that loaded up on draft picks. That hasnt been the case around here lately. This team has been lucky with Mangold and Dbrick and some others on the line not being injured. At some point line A meets up with line B. Not sure if that makes sense. Hey...I realize there is no perfect way to build a team. The Ravens showed last year that you can mix some great veterans with a young qb and go far..but not far enough. Lets face it..by the time their qb is hitting his stride...Lewis...Reed..and some others will be near the end or finished. My main problem is that when I look at this roster on offense..its a wide receiver away from being above average...the kind of offense that holds up well if you have a terrific defense. Perhaps thats next year. I just do not see all of this holding up to a 3 or 4 year plan...but more like a 2 year plan..and will Sanchez be a very solid qb in that time? Who knows.
Add to the lack of stockpiled picks the reality that there will be contract issues with current players. Yeah, that's always true, but I think the Jets will have more than average, and too many holes to fill. This team should have a bench with more players who will step it up in the next couple of years. You don't really see that for the most part on this team. The problem with adding a wideout next year is that meanwhile the OL is a year older, Jones, too. On the OL other than Mangold and Ferguson the others are not on the upside of peaking, that's for sure. It gives me a bad feeling...
I hear you. Its a concern..but in the NFL, rosters arent perfect I guess. Its tough to even get 70% of a starting roster that you can actually say will be set for a 4 year period? Somewhere around there. This trading draft picks to aquire higher picks or trading for a receiver is troubling to me. Then again..everytime they have done it...I liked it. I liked the Revis move...I loved the Sanchez move..and believe it or not..Im all aboard to pulling off a move for Marshall too. Call me a hyporcrite..lol. At some point you want to do a "Patriot" and see the Jets trade down with top picks and have a stellar draft with quantity..not high quality and limited players...but when you are perceived to be a now team, some moves make sense. Just seems like the Jets are constantly making splashes in the draft. Making the Marshall deal puts us in a position to wait for 2011 before you can possibly stockpile for quantity in the youth department. Then again...getting a 25 year old 6'4" 240 stud receiver..with some baggage I understand...dont grow on trees either.
Great post cman..dead on too. I totally agree. When you come in shoutin and saying this team is ready to win, the leash is shorter. Ryan has 3 years. The 3 major players is something we totally agree on too. You too seem concerned about the trading of draft picks. While Im sure it wont be 5 drafts, it seems draft picks will be gone for next year. You have to give this kid a stud at receiver and I would be shocked if thats not accomplished via trading draft picks. This Brandon Marshall has Tanny written all over it. Now I havent read any news reports today..for all I know its off the table...but I would be a bit surprised if he isnt in a Jet uniform this year. If not..it will be someone else for sure next year..and that means draft picks.
Actually, I think it will be a short season - no playoff games to extend the season this year. I'm just being realistic - been a jets fan since the late 60's.
