I wasn't saying HS QBs couldn't do it, just that they don't have the physical talents of a Petty.

Again, give me someone with talent that can be taught a skill with development and repetition and class work and film study-- over someone who has that skill but not the talent to excell once the skill is learned. Like you can't teach speed or height. You can't teach arm talent.

The NFL waits for no one and his chance could be gone in the blink of an eye. This preseason might be his last shot because Hackenberg is right there and if Petty can't compete in the film room and on the field, Petty will be done.

You could be right. I think Petty has a work ethic and will show he's made gains. I mean, he's KILLING it in Madden :D

Hack needs to show he can be an accurate passer. He's not going anywhere but if he peaked his senior year in HS and his freshman year at PSU (which happens with a LOT of young superstars that have simply matured before the rest of their competitors have matured) and the last 2 years are the real Hack, we're in trouble.

Maybe we can skip training camp and just have a Madden-off between Geno, Petty, and Hack. Get this settled quick!

Speaking of maturing before your competitors, don't forget Petty was a 24 year old playing against some 18 year old freshmen. By the time he's mentally ready to play an NFL game he could be 27 and on the last year of his rookie deal. I think that can help rationalize the front office pursuing a 21 year old who already has that mental experience.

that is amazing. Hackenberg just turned 21 years old and Petty will be 25 in a couple weeks. They enter the draft 1 year apart but thats quite a big difference in age.

So Hackenberg will come into training camp as a 21 year old rookie who started 37 games in college.
Petty came in as a 24 year old rookie who started 15.

He would get a shot somewhere else if the Jets let him go but it would be on the same terms as his shot here: show me.

I winced when I read the quote, because I knew what kind of shite it would stir up. Now Geno007 pops out of the hole to say Geno will be a Jet after Bryce is cut (barf), and now the kid has one more shot before Hack takes over. Its BS.

The Jets have 3 young QB's to develop and either make the franchise QB they always hoped for, or a viable backup/trade bait. At this stage, the best thing that could happen (and my dream scenario) would be Smith starts this year, gets a few wins then gets punched in the jaw again. This way teams may think he has value and the Jets can finally unload his ass for a late round pick. But he doesnt see the field as a Jet again and they can actually extract some value from him. When Geno goes down, they hand the reins to Petty who while he sometimes misfires he also throws the ball a ton and brings the Jets back for some late game heroic wins and a playoff run. Some people liken him to a young Favre... He has that kind of gunslinger mentality. He has several 4 TD/400 yard games.

Next season, Jets trade away Geno for 7th, have Petty as their starter and a 22 yo Hack waiting in the wings.

People need to get over the Madden quote. People say silly things all the time without thinking about it. If Petty was raving about how Madden was going to make him a better player if he studied it closely enough then you have a cause for concern. He just made a silly off-beat comment and that's how we should treat it. Think of it in terms of reaching out to all the 13 year olds out there who are convinced Madden is the last word on the NFL. There are many worse things to do than worship at the altar of John Madden. :)

When I read that quote, it raised my eyebrows (especially since the article I read took a more positive spin using his line of "night and day" improvement as the lede), but I really don't think it's a big deal at all.

However , the first awful day he has in TC or the first piss poor series he has in a preseason game and that quote is gonna come raging back with a massive vengeance.

I think he was just using the Madden game a a frame of reference. He didnt mean for real.

Concur...if that is a depth chart rather than a reference to ability on any given date.

If Mac believes Christian is the future of our franchise, then there is no reason to tank for a top pic. There's nothing huge to be gained by finishing 0-16. We already got our man.

So now's the time to start winning games, building a winning attitude, putting fannies in the stands, selling out of their Made in China jerseys, etc.

Once a team thinks they have their man, it becomes all about winning.

Now that Mac has our 'future' under contract, the last thing he wants is for the team to take steps backwards. It's time to Make the Jets Great Again!

This is why Fitz will be back, to continue our winning ways, and to instill a winning attitude in Hackenberg

It's not tanking. It's about finding out whether Geno is a wasted investment or not. He deserves at least that much.

Rex Ryan didn't care much about the offense after all. Much like his old man.

Or Bowles can use Geno much like how Walsh used DeBerg when he was tutoring Montana.

"Son, that's not how a QB is played. Watch, observe and learn."
