It's not right because they need a right guard, not another tackle. The OL has been fine since they benched GVR and the QBs are getting the ball out quicker. Fant is one of the best pass protecting LTs in football right now and is 29 years old with not much mileage on him since he spent most of his career as a swing tackle. Move Becton to RT and he'll be fine. But yes, let's keep dumping high picks into OT when the Jets don't need one. The Jets need playmakers on offense and defense, not more offensive tackles.
You're right we need a RG most. I was hoping we could get vet FA G or 2, for the experience helping the younger OL. theres a OL In this draft that plays G too, at a high level...cant remember his name. We just need that Dallas type OL . I got you on the sentiment. Fant has injury issues too , I know, but....
Agree with this - would like to see Moses back next year too. It'll be very interesting to see if Fant holds his job at LT and what happens to Becton. IMO Fant could still be an ascending player. Becton at RT is interesting and wonder how viable this is. The OL has been solid overall and depth is decent. With that being said, upgrading at RG and or adding more depth along the interior is important
The two starting tackles are going to be Fant and Becton. I'm not sure if they will keep Fant at LT even though he has been great in pass protection on the left side this year. Not sure if many remember, but Fant was miserable at RT in the first half of the Carolina game before Becton went down. I'm also not sure how receptive Becton would be to moving to RT based on past comments from Duke Mayweather (his personal OL coach), but he might not have a choice.
Round 1 (4) - Hamilton (S) This obviously depends on what happens before us. Det, Hou, and Jax all pick before us. Det will likely take KT or hutchinson. Jax will take neal. So it depends on houston who will take either haimlton or whatever edge rusher is there. Honestly I think They take the edge leaving us with hamilton and i'm not mad about it at all Round 1 (7) (from seattle) - Karlaftis (EDGE) with the seattle pick right now it stands at 7, i think by the end of the year it'll drop down to 10ish area. still at 7 Karlaftis should be there as the 3rd best edge in the draft in a draft full of edge rushers. I'm going to go heavy on defense and this covers edge and safety now. Karlaftis will rotate with lawson, JFM, and huff and possibly blair in a good edge group Round 2 (36) - Wydermeyer (TE) was originally thought of as a late 1st early 2nd and has slipped a little. should be there at 36. Wydermeyer likely starts as a rookie and goes with kroft who we bring back and yebiah who sticks around. wesco, griffin and brown can all go away. gives us an instant upgrade at TE in the receiving department even as a rookie Round 2 (39) (from carolina) - Lecitus Smith (OG) O-line isn't a big priority right now surprisingly. even without becton the jets o-line has went form worst to average this year. JD has turned it around. Still IDK if LDT is a long term answer and we always need depth. Smith is a converted TE and big and athletic and fits our scheme well. Could battle for a starting job as a rookie and solidfy the o-line. Fant has been great as has mcgovern. AVT is doing great for a rookie. becton and smith complete thelineup. LDT can be depth for us. GVR can be cut. Round 3 (68) - Kylar Gordon (CB) again were going heavy on defense. We do need some CB help as well. hall is great, echols has been a pleasent suprise. Carter is a nice nickel and guidry a good dime. after those 4 though we are not looking good. Gordon has all the traits to be a CB1 for us allowing more depth and an upgrade at CB1/2 with hall and echols can move into a reserve role Round 4 (109) From Carolina - Owen Pappoe (LBer) I'd prefer chad muma personally if he falls here but not sure he'll drop out of the top 100. Pappoe should be here though and he's a speedy LBer that fits our system perfectly as a WILL and can take over for mosley in 2023 when we cut him and provide much needed depth to a thin LBer group in 2022. Round 4 (111) From Minnesota - Tykee Smith (S) or Cade Otten (TE) THis depends on how the offseason goes. I like both players here. If we keep maye Then it's a no on smith as we'll have hamilton and maye starting with davis and riley as depth which is good enough. If we keep maye we can take otten since we did keep 4 TEs this season and I think brown, wesco, and griffen are all gone. otten would be the TE3 in a competition with yeboah. If we don't take maye then we take smith who would provide depth at safety with davis and hamilton starting along with riley who has done well here so far and deserves a roster spot in 2022 but not as a starter Round 5 (145) Calvin Austin III (WR) A small speedy WR who can play slot or outside. he's basically low budget elijah moore and can replace crowder as our WR3 as a rookie if crowder walks and if not he'll be good depth for injuries and eventually take over. Round 5 (156) (From Pitt) - OT Obinna Eze Massive 6-8 330lb OT with athleticism. a project player who needs to work on technique but it's the 5th round and he has potential to be our starting RT in a couple of years when we move on from fant. Combined with becton thats 700lbs protecting the edges. So with this draft I didn't do any trades. Defense the defense needs most of the help so taking the BPA avilable on defense who can be a game changer at safety with our 1st pick followed by the top edge avilable who is still a top 10 talent really adds to what we need on defense. more pressure up front and more playmakers in the back end. Adding Pappoe adds depth and an eventual replacement to mosley in 2023. these days Nickel is base defense so it's likely sherwood and mosley start in 2022 and then pappoe, quincy, and nasirildeen provide the depth. maybe phillips makes the roster too. I think cashman and davis are both gone. CB Gordon will improve the secondary as well and should start opposite of hall. which means carter is the NI and echols slides into the dime roll with guidry as depth. If maye walks we'll have tykee smith in the 4th who will be depth. I'm gonna assume we keep maye though for the sake of this so projected lineup EDGE Lawson, JFM, Karlaftis, Huff, Blair DT Q, Foley, Rankins, Shepard (no change here, none needed) LBer Mosley, Sherwood, Quincy, Pappoe, Nasirildeen CB Hall, Gordon, Carter II, Echols, Guidry S Maye, Hamilton, Davis, Riley (23) Not too bad Offense Offense doens't get as much love in this draft as it's been the focus for the past 2 offseasons but We do get some instant help. Mostly in 2nd round TE wydermeyer. He's an instant upgrade at TE for us and should be better then any TE we've had in the past decade. OG Smith is the perfect RG for us and our scheme and should be an upgrade over LDT who can stay as depth. Cade Otten in the 4th provides depth and an overhaul at TE where 3 of our current 5 TEs should be gone (keep kroft and yeboah). FInally with 2 5th rounders We get a future RT in eze to take over when fant walks in a year or 2 as well as austin III who is the perfect WR3 for our system to take crowders place if he walks. Probably in 2023 though QB Wilson, White RB Carter, Coleman, Ty, Walters WR Davis, Moore, Crowder, Austin III, Berrios, Mims TE Wydermeyer, Kroft, Otton, Yeboah OT Becton, Fant, Eze, Mcdermott OG AVT, LDT, Smith, Clark C Mcgovern, Feeny FB Bawden (27) K Pinero LS Hennesey P Mann PR/KR Berrios (3) Thats a full 53 man roster with only bringing back a few guys (maye, Berrios, Crowder, Sherpard, Foley) Obviously we can also improve in Free agency as well to take some of these spots and cut back end players and injuries will happen. Still i'd be ecstatic with a draft like this
Here's the thing: we need defense desperately and offense desperately. We need both. You don't fix that kind of problem by trading up. You fix it by trading down. You don't fix it by cherry-picking players you like and over-drafting them in the process. You fix it by taking the most talented players on the board at your picks. If you need everything then taking the most talented player is just adding value to the roster because as long as he is the most talented player at the slot you can't go wrong. You don't fix it by focusing on a given side of the ball or position group with your early and mid-round picks. You fix it by taking the most talented player on the board at each pick. You multiply the effect of drafting for talent over need every time you trade down and give yourself another pick. The big caveat of course is that your scouting and talent evaluation have to be good to maximize value. Garbage In/Garbage Out.
The big problem will be finding a trade partner who wants to move up. With no Q/B's at the top of the draft, I can see a few teams wanting to trade down but few willing to pay the price to trade up
BPA is what has gotten the Jets multiple interior defensive linemen in the first round. BPA at a high impact position.
That's wrong though. Our evaluation was the the best players were interior defensive line. Then you look at how the drafts played out and we drafted under performer after under performer. QW is a different case but he is the only DL we have drafted in a decade that was genuinely the BPA at his slot. The last one before him you could make the argument for was Muhammad Wilkerson and that's because Wilkerson was drafted late 1st round. When you have Rex Ryan making the choices for your team DL is always going to wind up prioritized because he wants to build a better version of his dad's 46.
How is it wrong? The Jets took the BPA on their board and wound up taking 5 IDL in the first round in 10 years. At a certain point you have to allocate your resources to the entire roster and you have to consider need when making a draft selection.
You can almost always find somebody convinced they have a great guy available in the first few picks and willing to trade up. The phenomenon is more pronounced in QB fever dreams but it is always there. As an example: are the Jets better off taking one of the top edges on the #3 next year or making the #X in the 1st round plus the 2nd, 3rd and the 2023 1st rounder? There are very few scenarios where we're not better off with 4 high picks than with the edge that we think is best.
This just means the Jets were over-valuing the IDL they scouted and under-valuing other positions. This is one of the problems that happens when you allow your scouts and evaluators to get stagnant. There's a lot of groupthink around the position those guys think they know best. One of the things that is true about the NFL is that it is very hard to find talented 300lb+ guys. This leads to people intensively evaluating the heavy's in every draft. When a franchise runs a 3-4 it's easy to overvalue those guys when you see ones you think might be special. Over the period of a decade the Jets did exactly that. They kept over-valuing 3T's and 5T's at the expense of other positions. Then their pick, while clearly talented, would have warts, and they'd do it again. Because talented 300lb+ guys are hard to find. Nowhere in the process did they stop to ask themselves if over-valuing those guys and slightly missing on them was hurting the talent base on the team. Rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat and suddenly you have taken 5 of them in the 1st round in 10 years and your OL, WR's and CB's suck and BTW you never found an Edge to make the whole thing work.
Do you know how many times since 2000 a QB hasn't gone in the top 5? I didn't until I just looked it up. Twice. 2000 (18th overall - our beloved Chad Pennington) and 2013 (13th overall - EJ Manuel). In that same time span, there's been 8 instances (2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014) out of 22 where multiple QB's weren't taken in the top 10. History shows us that, most likely, a QB will be drafted in the top 5 and there's a decent chance that another QB will go in the top 10. All you have to do is look back at the 2011 draft to see that subpar prospects get over drafted by QB-needy teams (Jake Locker-8th, Blaine Gabbert-10th, and Christian Ponder-12th). I'm still very optimistic that Detroit and/or Houston falls in love with either Pickett or Corral.
I don’t really see how Corral and Pickett don’t end up with these massive hype machines around them by draft time and they can make it even bigger if they have good to great bowl games.
With Goffs contract and the amount of holes, I’d be shocked if Detroit takes a QB with their top pick. Houston probably wants to see what they have in Mills but should be getting an extra 1 or 2 picks this year from a Watson trade so I’d idk if they’d use their 1st of several on a QB. I believe our 2nd pick is in a better spot for a trade back but can’t wait to see how it all plays out.
Goff's contract does make it a little tricky but they have a potential out after the 2022 season because they would "only" incur 10M in dead cap at that point. I could definitely see a scenario where they take Pickett or Corral and have a QB competition in TC. Same with Houston, especially if they're able to trade Watson for some picks because then they could use those Watson picks to build around Mills or *insert rookie QB here*.
If Detroit takes a QB with their first pick, they deserve to stay in NFL purgatory. They’ve experienced having a FQB with no support and it didn’t bode well. Having a top prospect in a position of need from your home state is a dream scenario, I’d be shocked if they pass on Hutchinson.
I can’t see the Lions passing on Hutch. The Texans present an interesting scenario where they don’t love Thibs over having a young QB to sell to the fan base. I hope we get to our pick at 4-6 and the hype train for Corral and Pickett was so immense someone gives us a haul for that selection (assuming Thibs and Hitch are gone).
Right now I'm thinking Pass Rusher and OL in the first. Preferably after a trade back, but those are very hard to predict. WR and LB in the second. Both huge needs IMO. Mims is donezo and as much as I love Quincy, there needs to be an upgrade there. DB in the third.
