There is nothing fundamentally wrong with super-delegates. The problem was that an outsider crashed the party in 2016 and predictably was shut down by the super delegates because hey who wants an outsider crashing the party? Note that Hillary Clinton won the majority of the pledged delegates before the convention and the controversy revolved around the absurd notion that the super delegates might instead choose the party crasher. The election that spawned the super delegates was 1980 - which was a fiercely contested primary between an embattled incumbent and several polarizing rivals trying to unseat him. The Democrats of that Age, 40-odd years ago, decided that the party should have a voice in a contested convention after a vicious primary season. In part due to the controversy in 2016, which I think was overblown, the super delegates are no longer allowed to vote on the first ballot. This means they only come into play when the electorate has not spoken clearly on who the candidate should be.
The Democrats have been weak since 2010. Everybody points to the ACA as the reason but the real reason is that Howard Dean's carefully crafted attempt to move the Dems a step to the right fell apart as he was demoted by Obama's transition team. This was one of the bigger mistakes the Democrats have made in the last generation.
Dems have been addicted to big donor money for a while. I know the economy was great by many metrics during Clinton's presidency, but his signing of NAFTA was a big reason why Trump emerged in the first place. And Obama had many Wall Street alum in his cabinet which mean the change he ran on wasn't going to happen.
Steve Bannon found guilty of contempt for defying congressional subpoena for the January 6th investigation. He will be sentenced in October and will spend a little time in jail
If Bannon gets caught up in the Oathkeepers trials and winds up convicted of something there he will be a three-time loser.
