Good to know you've got your finger on the pulse of the wide receiver situation in the NFL, JetsFan.

i wonder how much favre had to do with brad NOT getting much play time. think about it. all these 'gadget plays' take away from favre plus they take a lot of practice time to 'get it right'.

everytime favre defered to brad under center and favre lined up wide, he got knocked on his ass.

favre was not a fan of trickery, motion, gadget plays, etc. favre like to line up simple, hand it off, or toss it 5 yards at 200 mph.

    phone call at 10pm:

    favre: "hello?"

shotty: "hey brett, shotty here. listen, i want you to come in early tomorrow to work on some gadget plays with brad smith under center. it'll be really cool. you'll get to line up wide left and get knocked on your ass"

    'click'

    shotty: "hello? hello? brett?"

I choked my way through your post until I got to the bolded part and realized that you have no idea what you are talking about. Brad Smith is a STs stud. If you don't know that, you don't watch the games. Carry on with your ignorance.

I'm almost positive I read the same article every single year. It would be nice, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I thought this thread was about Brad Smith as a WR, yet the only good things you can say is he can do punt and kick return coverage/blocking.

I will say he can perform on the field as long as he doesn't have to touch the ball.

He won't even be a top five WR on the team this year, which is sad.

You're the one who said he sucked at special teams. That was an inaccurate statement that people corrected.

He's also been productive when he gets the ball in his hands. We almost always had a good gain when he ran the ball. Yes he fumbled twice, but we only lost one of those and it was in shitty conditions. He does need to protect the ball better though, and that's a valid complaint.

he was barely ever put on the field and i think most of the plays that were pass plays he was prolly the 4th or 5th read.

anyone denying him as being talented is moronic, everytime hes in the backfield people know its going to him and he still pulls out 1st downs. and he shows solid hands. most of all, he runs extremely tough, and his best asset is definitely his vision. he runs like hes watching an overhead shot of himself. being fast doesnt hurt also.

but i agree with the general consensus, this is a sink or swim year for him at WR. at least if he wants to break out, with our lack of depth, now is the year.

aside from that hes always worth keeping just for his ST play alone. people who deny this also are pretty dumb IMO.

I chuckled when I read this post.

The Jets should be utilizilng Brad Smith's talents for what they have in the guy.

Now we all understand that the WildCat formation is not as easy as it looks.

It will be hard for him to "break out" since we are going to run the ball far more than we are going to throw it -- look at the Ravens' offense from last year, no WR had a big year. (You can't compare our situation to Matt Ryan + Roddy White, Roddy White had a huge year in 2007 with 83 receptions, 1,202 yards, 6 TDS, the year before Matt Ryan got there.)

He'll prove that he is actually a WR this season, and he will be a reliable target on the outside. Next year if Sanchez progresses as we hope he will, then look for Smith to show off his skills.

The only problem is that I don't think he will really get a chance this year to prove his worth because of how our offense will be schemed, and then we may very well draft a top WR, trade for one, or sign one of the great WRs scheduled to be FAs if they hit the open market.

If he's on the roster, why not give him a shot?

I think Mangini knew of his talents just never put him in to play. I would love to see him on the field and truely start to produce as a wide receiver. I hope this year he get his chance.

the thing about this is, they have a very underrated WR in derrick mason. a very steady WR, i guess we have that in cotch. our biggest threat is definetly keller, which we have over the 08 ravens. x-factor is our run game, which on paper says will match the 08 ravens.

Hope you haven't forgot about Todd Heap, a pretty good TE.

I'm not optimistic, but it'd be nice.

i've never really been sold on him as a receiver. more of a gadget play/special teams guy....but different regime and you never know what you can get when you give someone an opportunity. No one expected Cotch to be anything a couple of years ago.

like i said, not counting on it but you never know
