this is what happens when you go 5 years without a 1st string qb.

Well, we had Favre for half a season otherwise you're probably going to pre-injury Pennington if you're talking about the last time the Jets had a real first string QB.

Simms mistakes today, thinking Kerley could catch and Cumberland could run.

You can hate on him, but he stood in this lame pocket and made passes. He didn't turn the ball over, there were no panic scrambles and he has a great arm.

Who cares if he cleared waivers 9 weeks ago. It was a very small sample, but he looked decent today. He showed enough to see more.

yes, he gives us the best chance to go 1-15 and get the #1 pick

in all honesty, it doesnt matter. all our qb options are terrible and we are so bad everywhere else we arent going to win more then 1 or 2 more games

Only Jets fans would be rooting and hoping for the third string quarterback who was released then resigned to the practice squad.

    This is bad.

This. What do we have to gain from playing Vick or Geno? 100% chance those guys are not the future. 99.9% chance Simms isn't either, but let's find out if he's worth keeping around as a backup or if we're wasting our time there, too.

The worst case is that he'd win just enough games to knock the Jets out of getting Mariota, make the Jets have to give up a buttload of picks to get him, or worse, make them think Simms could be the answer at QB and not draft a QB or sign a FA QB, then Simms' play is worse than Geno's next season. We know that Vick and Geno suck and there's little chance that the Jets will win a game with either of them playing. More than likely, there's no chance they'd win with Simms either, but with our luck they would. Right now, I want the team to lose out to force Woody to fire Idzik and Rex and hire a new GM who will have a clue about personnel.

Start either Vick or Simms. I don't care. Every time I think of Geno I puke in my mouth.

Why destroy another QB? Wait for the Jets owner to clean house and get people in who know football and how to mentor talent

Get it through your heads, Simms is our second string / backup quarterback.

    Geno Smith is done!

Simms has given us solid play every time the kid has has a chance to show us what he has. Why did Geno Smith deserve the many, many chances that he got yet Simms is some kind of a joke? Which one of them is primarily responsible for our current record?

why not? 1-8, 1-9 guaranteed. If you can live with a guy who throws a lot off his back foot and under throws wide open receivers, why not? It is tough to come in off the practice squad in the middle of a game, cold, when everyone else is hot. I saw nothing encouraging yesterday, but Vick looked like he was sleepwalking, so why not? Team effort was mediocre yesterday. One more nail in Rex's coffin. Pitt will kick their ass and the Jets will probably suffer still another 20+ point loss. Something Rex has been pretty good at the last few years.

Based on Pittsburgh's play the last 2 weeks, the Jets will probably get a 40-50 point loss hung on them.

One of the beat reporters should ask Rex what he'd like as his last meal this week.

I understand the OP's point and there is much merit to it. Simms is currently third string. But going back to last year I felt the CS did not give him enough support and opportunity to show whether he could be effective starting, or at a minimum be a dependable backup. But...

I don't buy this whole the season is lost so play to lose for a better draft pick. Even with more than usual changes to the roster there are many players who will still be on it. From young guys who will want to show that they can do to vets who you want to have them playing at a higher level than the team was under Smith, I think Vick gives the Jets the best chance to get back to some kind of winning football.

Plus I don't understand why so many here are so sure Vick will be gone next year. He may well be, but it's not a given.

Playing Vick right now also allows the Jets to see how durable he is. I have some questions in that regard, heh, but that was a bad hit to the back of the head yesterday. And he did get back in the game, so let's see how he holds up, play some winning football and see if Vick can perhaps come back next year as a hold the fort guy.

Having said that, yes, there is upside to playing Simms. Just not that other guy. I don't want to see him play another down for the Jets.

I said it last year when all was shit and I'll say it again this year, the primary case for starting Simms in a situation like this is to just see what you have in him. I remember when the Cardinals started that one guy at QB who was absolute garbage (can't remember name), it was the game when the Jets benched Sanchez and put McElroy in and he basically handed off the ball to the only TD scoring drive for either team all day. Anyways, that guy who Played QB for Arizona SUCKED, but the position that the Cardinals were in they said why not and let him play. Why? Because you never know what diamonds in the rough you MIGHT have on the roster, now this guy went and played horribly and proved he was not a NFL caliber QB, but at least the team was able to find that out, and they had nothing to lose in finding that out honestly. I'm saying when you have nothing left to play for there is no harm in throwing in 2nd or 3rd string guys and seeing what they can do, because if they suck, oh well they suck you weren't playing for anything anyways. If they turn out to be solid, when then, now you know what you have in the guy and can utilize him properly. Overall, this team is 1-8, Rex is gone after this season, might as well see if the kid can play just like Arizona did, you have nothing to lose.

The problem is this ... You have 52 other guys on the team who still want to win. They're busting their asses all week and they don't plan on throwing the last 7 games down the toilet. They don't give a shit about giving Simms a chance. They want the best QB on the field so they can win the damn game. If you have Micheal Vick on your roster, and you let him hold a clip board while Matt Simms is taking snaps, there will be a riot in the locker room.
