Rex didnt take over a 9 win team. He took over a 4 win team without Favre. You really think the team he picked up without Favre could win 9 games? sure
Favre was as big a detriment as any Jets QB I have ever seen. Pennington won 11 games with the Dolphins that year and they were 1-15 the year before. Put Pennington on the 08 Jets and they win more than 9 games easily. Favre played three good games that year - against the Pats in Foxboro and against the Cards at home and against the Titans on the road. Other than that, he plain stunk- even before the so-called boo boo to his arm.
I don't care that Weeb ended up with a losing record. A couple of playoff appearances and a Super Bowl make him the best Jets coach ever. He stays that way until someone else wins a SB.
He left us with Belichick and a ton of talent, talent that would make Herman Edwards look like a semi-competent HC for 3 seasons. We knew he was like that before he took the job, Belichick as a successor wasn't a bad plan.
 You credit Favre for the 9 wins? He can easily be credited for most of the 7 losses, thats for sure.
Sam Baugh gets my vote. He was a hell of a coach. Loved the way he got after players who took 'plays off'.
a 9 win team in 2008 is ther equivalent of a 5-6 win team the last 3 years, the sched was the easiest I have ever seen. w/o a doubt Rex is the best we have had in my lifetime. I wasn't around for Weeb but I imagine if this board was around back then Weeb and his 2 playoff apps would have been run out of town pretty quickly- actually before he ever even got a chance to make the playoffs.
The talent he left uis w/ was vastlky overrated, 3 HCs aren't walking away from the Jets w/ that supposed talent. Parcells did an AWFUL job as GM, the only good draft we had Al groh ran that draft in 2000 then promptly quit on us a year later.
Weeb Ewbank is the best coach in Jets history. Just from the standpoint of football history, Weeb Ewbank coached the winning teams in perhaps the two most important games ever played. That's been said before. What hasn't been said is that he molded two of the most influential franchises (Colts long-term and Jets in the late 60s) in football history. He coached two QBs who changed the way the game was played. Unitas was more influential, but we must remember Namath in the context of his era. Weeb's losing record with the Jets can be looked at as a consequence of Namath being injured in 1970, 1971 and 1973. Weeb is in the HOF in part because of what he did as Jets' coach. If Parcells makes the HOF, his Jets' "accomplishments" will be a foot note. Rex is a good coach. At 32-21, including play-offs, he currently has the best record of any coach in Jets history. You could've said the same thing about Joe Walton after 1986. Rex needs to win Super Bowl pretty soon, however, or fans will force him out as Jets coach. If Rex does win a VLT, then he will be considered the best coach in Jets history.
Yes but when you talk of NYJ history U have to go way, way back since sometimes the players of those era are far superior to the players you have seen since you became a fan. Actually that was not the question I posed also which was did RR or BP win championships as NYJ HCs?
