Without an epic collapse this year and getting less than 5 wins, Rex stays even if we don't have the best year. Rex has at least 2 more years, depending on how Sanchez does.
I dont think Rex would be fired this season even if the Jets finished last in the division. All it would do would cause a make-it or break-it year next year. Then he'd be on the hot seat. This season, not so much.
I think it would take a late season collapse (2-6 in the last 8 games) sans injuries for Ryan to get fired. They've done a lot to make him the face of the franchise, and I don't think they want to give up on him unless they absolutely have to. That said, I would be STUNNED to see Rex Ryan coaching the Jets in 2014.
I don't think 2012 will make or break Ryan. He's toned his act down quite a bit and barring another revelation about lost lockerrooms, dysfunctionality amongst the player, a public meltdown or other embarrassment (videos/arrests/etc..), Ryan is safe for now. Woody is very PR aware and anyone that brings shame or embarrassment to the organization (Braylon Edwards) won't be around long or won't return at season's end. Now if any of the above mentioned happens again, then 2013 becomes the make or break year for Ryan barring another deep playoff run.
Some older Jet fans (those that were born after 1980) may remember Walt Michaels and the infamous plane ride home after the Miami loss. Rex's status as Jet's HC is secure as long as his defense plays like it did in 2009.
Older?.....as in AFTER 1980? After the Miami loss (the AFC "Mud Bowl"): Walt Michaels, after leading the Jets to a blowout win at Cincy vs the previous year's Super Bowl AFC represenitive Cincinati Bengals and following that up with another underdog road playoff victory versus the Raiders (this, after convinced that Al Davis--during his L.A. stint--was going "Belichick" on Jet practices leading into that game) then suffered an NFL-corrupted and sanctioned AFC Championship Game loss (0-14) loss vs. the Miami Dolphins during a time when Don Shula was the head of the NFL "Rules" Committee. Go research the "tarp" regulations leading up to that game.....recall, this was not a wildcard game but a CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP game......pro football has never forgotten the AFL upstart New York Jets' 16-7 SB-III dressing down of Shula, the NFL, etc.....and while Richard Todd and Mark Gastineau (and David Woodley) may've spit the bit come crunch time during that Jan., '82 AFCC game, Shula (& NFL "Rules" Co.) was nevertheless (and not surprisingly) given a 'pass' for the "broken pipes during a Miami deludge-flooded field" conditions (the following is for those who actually follow NFL football): ....slowing the field so as to protect the relatively slow-footed Miami cornerback (Don McNeil anyone?) vs Jet WR tandem led by Wesley Walker. again, pro football (NFL) has never forgotten the Jets' 16-7 dressing down of "Mr. NFL / Colts, later Rules Committee" Don Douchebag Shula, and that includes Pete Rozelle, that local (Harrison, NY) uppity scumbag whose KYLE ROTE (tv media) syncophants were upchucking non-stop as Namath jogged off the OB (Orange Bowl) that day in Jan., '69 with his 'index finger' digit in the air .... So...up yours PatsTexFan, and yours as well, no-zilch Bills Over Jets troll, and "F" ALL of you never-played-the-game bandwagon-jumping trolls who add absolutely NOTHING to TGG beyond your run-of-the-mill "wicked" NE (and Toronto) provincialism.
My prediction to that he won't be isn't meant to be a slight on his coaching abilities. It's more based on my belief that the talent on the roster isn't very strong this year and I don't believe they will have the capital next off-season to make necessary improvements. They're gonna lose plenty of games over the next two years, and it won't all be Rex Ryan's fault, but he WILL take the blame.
Nobody is HC for life in the modern NFL. The longest tenured head coach right now is Andy Reid and he's managed to keep his job because the Eagles have been competitive almost every year since 2000. 4-12 next year would get him kicked upstairs or out in a hurry after the 8-8 last year. Belichik is #2 in terms of tenure, arriving in New England a year after Reid was hired in Philadephia. 8-8 followed by 4-12 would get him moved out of the head coaching position also. If the Jets suffer a collapse this season the odds are pretty good the broom comes out. If they stay competitive but don't make the playoffs Rex is probably safe but if they become uncompetitive he's toast.
For Rex to not be HC going into 2013, it would take a drastic failure IMO. Something like a 3-13 record along with locker room issues or a similar fallout or a big scandal. I think they like his persona, and with another non-playoff season he'll still be 2-2 in making the AFCCG. The fact that it would be the last two seasons that were duds hurts that stat slightly, but still. His defenses have all been top 5 as well. I don't think he has much to worry about, especially because I see us as a 10 win team maybe more next season.
Best record incl postseason of any HC in franchise history. Too bad that SOJFs and a few of our beat writers (Hi Dick Semen-i) cant be put on the hot seat.....AKA the electric chair Sent from my SGH-T679 using Tapatalk 2
Rex isn't bullet proof. The organization has some kind of agenda as can be seen from the Tebow trade which makes zero sense from a football perspective. Getting Tebow playing time may not be consonant with winning games. Rex needs to do both.
Please stop Sunshiner. No AFC East titles, no AFC Championships and no SB's. It doesn't take much to set records as a Jet coach. Even the shiniest of Sunshiners has to admit the Jets franchise history sets the bar very low. Rex won't be on the hot seat in 2012, but an 8-8 season or less would be a pattern of regression. 2 years where the team was 1 game from a SB, to two consecutive years of .500 ball or less would be going in the wrong direction. Throw in locker room issues and a coach who admits to losing the pulse of the team last year and it would be a problem. Considering all the sh*t Rex talked, if he were to go 8-8 or less, he deserves to be on the hot seat. I don't think it will happen, but to say it's impossible is just wrong. Stop crying SOJF anytime people critique the team.
Enjoy wallowing in your misery and suffering benigno Ill just enjoy the Jets this season Sent from my SGH-T679 using Tapatalk 2
Except you actually are an SOJF, and not simply an objective critic. I mean seriously, you even make Bradway look like a sunshiner these days with the way you constantly rip the team and blow things out of proportion for the worse. Just do us all a favor and root for the Giants already you whiny bitch.
When this team wins a Super Bowl or establishes itself as a year-in/year-out contender the SOJF cohort will dwindle and the Sunshiners will ascend. Until then the Sunshiners will look like eternal optimists. The guys banging the drum in half-empty bleachers in Major League.
I got one better.... IF our beloved Jets win the ring, then all dark siders and all SOJF will be perma banned from TGG.
