The weather must be truly fair these days for this to even come up. Leon is explosive, shifty, hard running, hard working, the total package out of what you'd want from a player. He is definitely worth the money and the Jets should do everything they can to keep him around at a reasonable price.
Leon needs to stay a Jet. If we can get him for $3-4.5million a year for 3-4 years, that would be perfect. Just because Shonn Grenne had a great game, it doesn't mean he can handle the load when TJ is not on the team anymore. Greene/Leon has the potential to be one of the best duos in the league.
As much as I agree with the majority here that Leon should've signed the contract put forth during TC. I hope the Jets do take care of him and offer him a reasonable contract this offseason (provided he has a full recovery from his injury). I mean...he could've held out....but he showed up during TC and played his ass off for us over the long haul. I understand this is a business....and the Jets FO will do what's best for the team. I just hope Leon's dedication and accolades are taken under consideration when discussing a new deal. Alvin Keels needs to go though....fuck that moron.
If he can. The guy just suffered a compound fracture so there is a good chance that Leon comes back a step or two slower. With such a severe injury, his marketability took a serious hit and there is no way he is worth $6 mill right now. Prolong any decision on his future for as long as possible, see how his recovery goes, and then make a business decision. If you can shore him up for a substantial discount right now, it's worth the risk IMO. Greene's emergence relates more to TJones's future than Leon's.
I agree with this completely. The Jets should tell Leon to get a new agent and then they'll work a deal for him now while he has time off, that way he's secure in his job, secure with his family, and is very focused on putting his efforts into returning to the Jets at 200% next season.
Leon is worth his money to this team. Probably not more $ then the Jets offered but you cannot argue the fact that everytime this kid gets the ball in his hands he makes things happen. I would not give up on Leon no matter how good Greene looks from here on out. IMO Leon is a vital part of this team with his ability as a returner and his catches out of the backfield. We have to get him back and keep him a JET.
for the people claiming that his injury is cause of his higher workload is just silly. Im pretty sure working more didnt make a fat ass defense back fall on his leg.
I cant agree with this ...he will walk sign with Miami or another conference foe ...and beat up on us for years to come.
Good one. Honestly, Leon was far better at returning punts and kicks than he was at playing RB...and with that, because you excel at a non-skill position, you DO NOT command 6 mill/year. Sorry Leon. Should have signed when you had the chance. Dolphins don't need Leon, but the Patriots will prob get him.
News from Rotoworld: Leon Washington, out for the year with a fractured fibula, reportedly took out a Lloyds of London insurance policy before the season. In the final year of his rookie contract, Washington turned down multiple offers from the Jets this summer in hopes that he'd attract a Maurice Jones-Drew type of deal in free agency. Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum is throwing his full support behind Washingon, saying he expects the big-play threat to be with the Jets a "long, long time." http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2009/10/ny_jets_knew_right_away_leon_w.html
Yeah looks like Tanny will offer Leon a 2-3mil contract next year and Leon will take it next time. Although I wish we could show some loyalty to this guy, I think Tanny knows his offer will be more attractive the second time around.
News from Manish, jets beat writer- "ManishMehta1 #Jets RB Leon Washington update from agent RT @AlvinKeels @JimmyJets he is doing well. Upbeat & ready to rehab. #nfl #nyjets"
Hell yes, Leon and Greene are our future after Jones leaves. The run blocking just started to pick it up last week and Leon put up a 100 yards, he is our most explosive player. Darren Sproles is an extremely similar player to Leon and he had this injury in 2006 and recovered fine and is still as fast as ever. Stop underrating Leon and calling him injury prone because of one fluke injury.
Yeah he has done more work then most in the past few years. He is a tough guy and no where near injury prone. He'll be back and just as good as ever.
its been posted in an article before, Tanny is going to wait out on as many of these contracts as possible- washington and edwards as two examples, tender them for draft picks and if teams out bid we recoup draft picks. I am not sure if we have seen enough of Leon this year to determine that giving him more work load is lessoning his production. I do know though he has been taken off punt return duty and leanord is safe and solid but no leon and I believe the offensive struggle early in season has had alot to do with trying to propertly sub in Thomas Jones and Leon Washington.
but even in that occasion he chose the smaller of the two bones... I actually would like to keep TJ next season but not for all the money he is supposed to be getting. I'd like to resign him fr like 2 years at 1.5 each.. or next year 2 and the next one 1 (which would be about veteran minimums anyway).
this is TJs contract, no way we keep him for that cap number: http://www.nyjetscap.com/thomasjones.html
Leon and Greene are the future 1-2 punch RB combo for this franchise and going to be one of the best for many more years to come, c'mon son!
