Picking a freakin kicker in round 2 is insane. Whats more insane is that nobody at hofstra talked him out of it. I would have laughed at him at told him to find a position player or your out, and take ur head coach with you.
Mike Hickey ran the Jets' drafts from 1978-1989. To be fair, one would need to look at each of those drafts, consider what the Jets needs were, and who he passed up in order to take the players he did draft. I'm also not sure if teams drafted BPA back then as much as they do today. He did draft some very good players for the Jets, but he also drafted some serious busts. He was the guy who took Kenny O'Brien over Dan Marino. He drafted such notable busts as Johnny "Lam" Jones, Ron Faurot, Dave Cadigan, Russell Carter, Roger Vick, Alex Gordon, Onzy Elam, and others. His drafts from 1986-89 were especially bad. In the '85 draft he took Toon, and some serviceable DBs (Rich Miano, Kerry Glenn, Lester Lyles and Donnie Elder). He had two 1st round picks in '84 and took Russell Carter and Ron Faurot (OUCH!). By the same token, however, he drafted such notable Jets players as Chris Ward, Mickey Shuler, Mark Gastineau, Marty Lyons, Pat Ryan, Lance Mehl, Freeman McNeil, Johnny Hector, Reggie McElroy, Bobby Humphrey, Jo-Jo Townsell, Jim Sweeney, Kyle Clifton, Tony Paige, Dan Fike, Al Toon, James Hasty, Dennis Byrd, Paul Frase, and Marvin Washington.
That was the worst thing about the Jets then, the guy overstayed his welcome big time, it was impossible to fire this guy. Woody had a hard-on for him. He survived many regimes, and it wasn't until Woody hired Charley Casserly as a consultant to see the issue.
Not sure Idzik was there long enough to be rated that bad. His drafts weren't good, but he was new and his first draft was based a lot on the previous regime's scouting dept. Never got a chance to fulfill his vision of building the team. Not saying he would have done well, but he never got to spend the money he left on the table for Mac, so you'll never know.
i gotta call bullshit on those excuses. Idzik had leeway to fire/hire scouts, and he did actually make a lot of changes. Mac was in the same situation, managed to overhaul the entire scouting dept as well as the organizational approach to scouting. He didn't seem to have the same problems as Idzik out of the gate. and Idzik's drafting got even worse his second year (one of the worst drafts ever, in a deep talent class). Idzik also had plenty of opportunity to spend in 2014. he showed no understanding of the market, and really never demonstrated any type of vision. he sat on his hands while leaving the coaches, players and fans out to dry. i don't think you could've done a worse job over 2 years. he didn't deserve any more time to fuck things up.
It's a murky question b/c Idzik's arguably biggest mistake was putting Bradway in charge of that first draft & whatever the hell happened in that second one. The whole organization misinterpreted the changes that were needed after the Tannenbaum era. They seemed to focus on the cap management/football asset allocation aspects which yes needed to improve but so did the personnel department. That was a major major oversight. Finally it seems like Mac has brought the scouting infrastructure up to a optimal level.Time will tell.
its a pretty easy assumption to make that his hire/fire authority was limited at best considering, 1. he was a saddled with a head coach he had no authority to replace 2. terry bradway was the ultimate cockroach in the organization, untouchable even after being fired from his g.m. position. like i said, idizck biggest mistake was taking the job in the first place.the fact is, we were not going to get any one worth while under the state the franchise was in at the time.
nicely done--well stated. My only reservation is Reggie McElroy being lumped in with the good picks. I remember a night game against Pittsburgh in 1984 where Reggie was called for holding about 5-6 times. Not all were accepted because some came on unsuccessful 3rd downs. Agree totally with the rest of your post.
Agree. As I have posted in the past, I seriously believe that over half the people on this message board could have drafted better than Boobway, Tannebaum or Idzik.
I'd give it hands down to Bradway. Idzik got us Ivory for a 4th rounder. Wiffed on Miliner, but hit a 3 run home run with Richardson. Bradway traded up for Dewayne "bone on bone" Robertson, took a kicker in the 2nd round and, I'm done.
You got that right. Bradway even screwed up matching Chad Morton's offer sheet with Washington if that is even possible. Basically all you have to do is photocopy the offer sheet and change the name of the NFL team (from their team to yours) and file. Bradway somehow screwed that up and to top it off then agreed to using an arbitrator to decide who owns Morton's rights AFTER the arbitrator had earlier disclosed that he had redskins season tickets. Surprise! He ruled for Washington. Not appealable once you agree to that arbitrator.
we could look back at that hiring / firing as a major turning point in this franchise. Woody finally realized he needed help and got Casserly here to hire Mac / Bowles.
Thanks. Maybe time and an aging memory made me be too kind to Reggie McElroy. I remembered him as being pretty good, and he was with the team a fairly long time, but perhaps he shouldn't have been with them so long. The OL never was what it should have been when Kenny O was the QB. Perhaps a lot of that was due to McElroy and Hickey's failure to replace him.
I don't know if he was the worst but overall he wasn't very good.....Maybe he would have turned out OK since he finally got us a bunch of cap space then was dumped Atleast he didn't leave us with a bunch of overpaid bums and no cap flexibility His problem was being too stubborn.....In today's NFL (especially in NY and for the Jets) you need to atleast field a somewhat competitive team...He just went straight up rebuild with no care in the world. He also didn't make it work with Rex which is a disaster waiting to happen Not drafting one of the 18 stud WRs in the draft available was a joke at the time and he thought he was smarter than everyone else
John Ivy League Idzik was a great Accountant and penny pinched us to having the $ that Mac Thank God knew how to use wisely 4 QBS could of been had under that Idzik draft Overall a complete bust of a GM
