Guidry had a 1.74 ERA but the league average was only 3.63 that year. Santana's putting up a 2.75 when the average is 4.54. Wins shouldn't enter into the equation as they reflect more on the team around you then necessarily the job the pitcher is doing.
Roger Clemens was the last STARTING pitcher to win the MVP. Clemens (86) 24-4 2.48 ERA Santana (06) 18-5 2.75 ERA Santana could possibly not reach 20 wins, and no way does he get to 24
I always find these arguments silly. Don't give a guy an award because he plays on a really good team. Alot of you want to crown Fat Papi MVP when he is protected by Manny in the lineup...
But both of them had a Playoff Calibur team around them, so it balances out. Remember, the Yankees needed to win a tiebreaker in '78 to win the division.
Ditto Roger Maris And Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio and Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig and Ted Williams and .......
Are you trying to say Jeter isn't protected? I've got $100 million dollars worth of contracts that says he is...
I am a Yankee fan, but I still have to go with Jeter. Mourneau and Dye may have great #s as well, but Jeter has kept it really consistant all season. 22 game hit streak going into tonight...
Well, that was certainly a glib response. The Phillies and Astros both have "Playoff Caliber" teams around them(in the 06 NL at least), do you think the Astros staff gets anywhere near the run support that the Phillies staff does? Even pitchers on the same staff can have wildly flucuating RS numbers over the course of a season. How else do you explain 14 wins for Trachsel and 17 wins for Randy? Anyway, I don't believe Santana should get the MVP, Hafner is the pretty clear choice in my mind.
Missing the point... You want to condemn Jeter for having good players around him and in the same breath praise Ortiz...
In terms of the regular season, I see alot of similarities between the '06 twins and the '78 Yankees. That is my point.
Wins by a starting pitcher are a silly thing to base anything on. Clemens ('86): 254 IP, 238 K/67 BB, 0.97 WHIP, 169 ERA+ Santana ('06): 212.7 IP, 230 K/43 BB, 0.98 WHIP, 166 ERA+
translation: keep these evil, scary, allcaps letters out of this thread. it's about clutchosity and being a winner, baby!
I think the top 3 should be Hafner, Santana, and Jeter. As much as I don't care for Jeter, he is having a great numbers season, one of the best in the league, without all this stupid team leader rah rah BS. EDIT: Well, looks like I forgot that Pronk has broken hand, so he won't be accumulating any stats for the rest of the year.
