The other way to look at it is that we don't have a QB that will try to force it to Coles every down even if we have other receivers, Delhomme often throws it to Smith even if he is doubled or triple teamed
He's the perfect receiver for Chad. Sure, Moss and others are faster, but Chad would only underthrow a speedster. Not sure how anyone could say someone whose second in the league is not a #1
I'm the father of the poster. I think that Coles is a magnificent WR. He's not a game breaker and he's approaching 30. I think he only has a few good years ahead. The Jets need an elite WR. Coles would be a tremendous #2 WR on a team with a game breaker on the other side. Under our dink and dunk system he?s been marvelous but our running game has suffered with this philosophy and will continue to suffer under our present philosophy. Adding to a speedy WR only begins to address our problem. We also need a QB who can throw the ball more than 10/15 yards consistently. The addition of Michael Turner in free agency would solidify our offense. :jets:
If Coles was playing with Peyton Manning or Carson Palmer and putting up the numbers he was putting up you could make the argument he was a #2. Assuming, that is, that another receiver on his team was putting up better numbers. Coles has started for his team at receiver for 6 seasons in a row. He has led that team in receptions and receiving yards for 6 seasons in a row. Anybody who sees that as a #2 receiver needs glasses in my opinion and maybe a course in NFL talent comprehension.
Look at Cris Carter, Terrell Owens, Marvin Harrison, Tim Brown and the other great receivers in NFL history early in their careers. Coles blows them away. If not for the toe injury Coles would be on a historic pace, second only to Jerry Rice, in terms of receptions and yards at this point in his career. If Coles lasts for 14 years like some of the guys above did he's going to catch 1,300+ balls for 16,000+ yards. You have to look at the numbers to understand exactly how good Laveranues Coles actually is. If he was playing with Peyton Manning he'd be the second highest paid player in football right now.
Hey everyone...look at the old man back pedal. We are talking about the here and now Pops. Coles is 3rd in the leauge in receptions and 9th in yards last I looked. He is on track to break the Jets single season record in both catagories. He was just voted team MVP. What else do you have to do to get the number #1 moniker? There may be an arguement of whether or not he is an elite NFL receiver...but give it up old man.... he is a legit #1.
Well in regards to the future I would think we don't have to worry about replacing Coles for 5 more seasons.
very true and impressive. as for the question ill say coles is a #1 receiver. Good poll for a day that we are just sitting here and watching.
definitely a number one. even those receivers who apparently get doubled have "GREAT" WR's as there number 2. ex. harrison - wayne owens - glenn boldin - fitzgerald his numbers prove it every year. "your ol' man's full of it" (Christmas Story reference).
Upon first glance, I thought this was referring to the first round of the draft. I was getting all geared up for my "let's just focus on getting into the playoffs" speech. Glad the playoffs is what the 1st round was referring to.
I voted Coles is not a #1 as I was reading the question as "is Coles an elite WR". I agree he is a consistant if not spectacular #1. But definitely not elite by any means.
Kewl... If I were your Dad, I'd have to look under that tree and remove an item or two... "in jest".... Merry XMas!
