I STRONGLY recommend this book for people posting in this thread. I really enjoyed it:

    J-E-T-S! JETS! JETS! JETS!

Comprised of exclusive interviews with Jets players, coaches, and other figures surrounding the organization, Sack Exchange: The Definitive Oral History of the 1980s New York Jets is aneye-opening account of a memorable era in one team's history, which also takes a step back and looks at the state of the National Football League as a whole during the 1980s.

From the events that shaped the 1980s Jets, such as the legacy of Joe Namath, to their multiple playoff appearances during the decade, each triumph and disappointment is chronicled and supplemented with insider information. Other highlights include examinations of the beginning of the Jets' rivalry with the Miami Dolphins; the controversial firing of head coach Walt Michaels; the defensive line, given the nickname "The New York Sack Exchange" and steroid use by certain players and throughout the NFL.

Featured are original interviews with Joe Klecko, Mark Gastineau, Marty Lyons, Abdul Salaam, Wesley Walker, Al Toon, Ken O'Brien, Richard Todd, Pat Leahy, Walt Michaels, and Joe Walton, among many others.

"The Definitive Oral History of the 1980's New York Jets"

The Jets have way too much oral history, they have sucked for way too long.

lol lots of great posts in this thread, guys. thanks for contributing to it! Hopefully some more guys weigh in as well. I actually read that Sack Exchange book, and it was an excellent recap of the mid 80's NY Jets teams. It definitely covers the 1986 collapse at great length.

Joe Walton has his own stadium named after him at my Alma matter Rmu it's kinda craxy. I got to watch the old guy do his thing for those years. But he was avg as best and needed more talent

That is legend. Passing on Marino was from Leon Hess. He had his stupid “family friendly” team concept and Marino had admitted smoking marijuana in college. Hess’ asinine insistence on having only “players of acceptable character” is a major reason the team sucked for so many years. (Also the reason we didn’t have cheerleaders for so long)

Fun Fact - The Jets were actually one of the first teams to actually have cheerleaders. My 5th grade teacher was an ex- cheerleader from 69 (she was smoking hot.) They were disbanded after winning SB III.
I have my signed Namath photo because of her.

We used to throw peanuts and peanut shells at him when he was in the broadcasting booth. You had to aim just right to get them in. He would get all red in the face and curse at us during commercial break. Total hump.

Anyone on hear old enough to remember Joe Walton constantly getting caught picking his nose on national TV, both home and away? The only winning Jets coach in history? Well, he owns the nose-picking stat hands down. If nyjunc were here, he'd manage to argue there is some other coach out there with more picks on their resume and then try to prove it. Fail, keep trying to prove it, then say it comes down to booger size, not attempts.

Ha, yet someone else beat me on this. There must be something in the water because Joe Walton picking his nose has been mentioned no less than 15 times over the past month. I used to bring it up constantly years ago. Me and Trend were partners in crime on it. Trend and I? Damn, I miss that guy. One of the quirkiest, funniest, sweetest posters ever. We used to have a ball, but you're too much of a sourpuss, Old Man Grumpus.

    45-3 later..... o_O
