You settle ties for a wildcard entry in a division before you settle any tie outside. That's step one in the wildcard tiebreak process when more than two clubs are involved. http://www.nfl.com/standings/tiebreakingprocedures The simulator you sent me to has the Jets out if the Steelers, Bengals and Jets all finish 9-7. Unless the Colts also finish 9-7 in which case the Colts are the team handing the Jets a wildcard spot.
This is exactly right. stop will all the other nonsense. We win all 3 and any of the 3 happen and we are in. end of story. We just would prefer the Bengals winning and playing the Ravens for the division so the game means something to the Ravens and its our best chance on paper
Well yeah, we said we need the winner of the Steelers/Bengals to lose the last week so if the Steelers win, we need them to lose week 17. What is so hard to understand. We need the Bengals to go 9-7 or the Steelers 8-8... how's that.
Well the easiest way to look at it is that we win ties with the Bengals and Colts at 9-7 so that's who we want to be tied with at 9-7. If those two teams wind up 9-7 we're in.
Other than what was obviously a fluke due to Indy's run defense, the Jets have played poorly and lost against every good team they've faced this year. They've beaten all of the bad teams they've faced. So, they could conceivably get to 9-7, sneak in, and voila! No bad teams to be beat. Baltimore with their decimated defense and Sanchez-like QB is the only team I can see them even having a chance against. It would get historically ugly against Denver or Houston on the road.
We know how Jets-Ravens ends, in an ugly low scoring loss like in 2010 and 2011. We know how Jets-Broncos ends, in a rout as Peyton Manning figures out the Jets scheme for the day and puts them away in the 2nd half. I think the only team they could plausibly beat would be if things worked out just right to match them up against the Colts in round 1. They could get through to the divisional round in that one pretty easily.
THIS. The memories are comically short on this board. I am shocked that so few can be realistic. Can they sneak in? Sure. But show me where they've beaten any teams the caliber of any of the division winners, or any team with a decent QB (except for Indy, which gave up nearly 300 yards on the ground to us)? Everyone points to us "hanging" with Houston - we got a kickoff return for a TD or we're not in that game. You think we're going to be able to rely on the special teams in the playoffs? ANything is possible, but all this crap going around about the Jets hanging with any division winners is just pure comedy. Any given Sunday is the ONLY way they can, and a lot of things would have to go right.
the best thing would be the colts collapse to get the Jets the 5 seed -- with the hated pats losing last night it would be #6 jets at #3 pats in round 1 since denver controls the #2 seed.
Based on what??? It's not pessimism, it's realism. You can 'get out of here with that shit' with your blind optimism. What makes you think we can beat Denver on the road? They have all the ingredients we've failed against this year: good QB (first and foremost), good playmakers, and a good defense. What team have we beaten with ANY of those qualities all year, at home or on the road? You can't name one. The Colts are the only quality team we beat and they have a horrific defense, with a rookie QB that our defense confused.
The only thing you said there that made sense was that blaming Hill is ridiculous. It's one of many things you can point to. But you are off base - the Hill play came AFTER the fumbled kickoff. He catches that ball, he might make it down inside the 5 or maybe even score. But at worst it allows the Jets to run the clock down, have NE kill their time outs and the FG WINS the game, without giving them a minute-plus to march down and tie it.
I'm laughing my ass off. This is all predicated on the Jets winning out. Why is everyone so confident that they can do that?
Just like when the Jets had to fly out west in the divisional round in 2009 to play the 13-3 SD Chargers, averaging 30 points per game and who had won eleven games in a row? They destroyed the Jets, right?
Well the activity in the thread is probably because it is preferable to be posting here than in a "We're so screwed, just screwed, totally screwed..." thread, which would be the likely alternative. You can start that one up and see where it goes though. Might be interesting to see how many posts and views that one got compared to this one.
I am not even thinking about how we would do in the playoffs. Geez, lets win tonight and setup a big home game, season ticket holder here, and see if we can get what we want for week # 17. If we play in important games here at the end, that's more then any of us would dream of Thanksgiving night say around 10:15. We all know this team is flawed and taking advantage of an easy schedule... aahhh dahhhh!!!!!!!!! I DONT CARE!!!!!!!!!
Just think how much it will piss off Giants fans if the Jets waltz into the playoffs against a patty-cake schedule while the Giants are losing to the Ravens and missing out by a game. Mike Francesa will be must-listen radio for a week straight at that point. Nothing to distract him either after the bowl games peter out. If the Jets actually win a game in the playoffs he may go off the deep end.
