Why all the fascination with Trent Richardson? If he was drafted by the Jets, he wouldn't perform that much better than Shonne Greene. The Alabama o-line was creating huge holes for Trent, when he played there. The Jets O-line needs re-tooling, and with the way the offense is limited because of Sanchez, which allows defenses to put 8 men in the box, Trent won't have holes to run through. Upgrading the o-line is significantly more important than trading up for a running back.
A 1st and 2nd round pick is great for starters, and Kyle Wilson is an immediate starter on the Vikings at one CB spot. Kyle Wilson broke out last year but no one seems to notice because we have Revis. He was a 1st round pick of the Jets two years ago and has been groomed by Rex Ryan. He started 6 games opposite Revis and played in the 10 others covering the slot (Welker, etc.) or on 3rd downs and in that limited playing time tallied a whopping 41 tackles (35 entirely solo), 6 passes broken up, and 2 interceptions. For comparison's sake, Nnamdi Asomugha started 15 games last season and tallied 40 tackles (35 solo), 5 passes broken up, and 3 interceptions. Again: Kyle Wilson in 6 games starting: 41 tackles (35 solo), 6 passes broken up, and 2 interceptions. Nnamdi Asomugha in a full season: 40 tackles (35 solo), 5 passes broken up, and 3 interceptions. You don't think the Vikings would highly value the addition of Kyle Wilson to their god awful pass defense? Add in the fact that they then have a 1st round pick and two 2nd round picks to use. Instead of getting Matt Kalil and Janoris Jenkins, the Vikings can get Jonathan Martin, Kyle Wilson, Janoris Jenkins, and another player in the 2nd round like WR Alshon Jeffery or Chris Givens. You tell me which is a better deal for the Vikings. Matt Kalil and Janoris Jenkins. OR Jonathan Martin, Janoris Jenkins, Kyle Wilson, Alshon Jeffery. throw out the trade chart, doesn't mean anything anymore. If you make your team better in a trade as opposed to standing still you do it.
Nnamdi had one of his worst seasons in a long time, I sincerely hope you're not comparing Wilson's and his play. Wilson is up and coming but he is no #1 CB . You're assuming way to much in these scenario's. A team just traded 3 first round picks and a 2nd to move up from 6 to 2. I understand that they slightly overpaid because they wanted a QB but its ridiculous to me to think that the Vikings would move all the way to 16 for our pick, a 2nd, and Wilson. The Vikings have a bad defense but also have a huge investment in Peterson and Ponder. They have NO offensive line, they need a guy like Kalil, not someone like Martin who's stock is dropping and IMO is overrated around here. Getting a great LT like Kalil is extremely important. Lets live in your world here and say the Vikings somehow accept that trade, how would that improve the Jets? Richardson is a great player, I'm a huge fan of his, but this team has holes all over the place, RT, #2 WR, OLB, FS, ILB, OG, etc. Why would we risk improving the team for a RB? Its just not a smart move. The day we create a complete team is the day we have a chance to win the SB. No top team out there right now is winning a SB solely because of a RB. Teams like the Jags, Falcons, Vikings, Titans, and Eagles all have top RBs but look at their records. To win a SB without a current elite QB we need a complete team, a team like the Texans, 49ers, or Ravens. Follow their game plan ,add a little bit of luck, and we're in Championship contention.
As for Wilson he certainly isn't Revis or Asomugha, but he's much better than people give him credit for and will only get better. He was given a chance to shine as a starter for 6 games and certainly shined. Those #s, extrapolated over a full season, would have earned him a Pro Bowl nod and a spot on the All-Pro team. The question is can he do it for a full season? As a 3rd year player I'm sure he can. As for T-Rich and our team needs, there is clearly a reason that our front office is heavily looking into moving up for the stud RB -- and the reason is because our offense depends on a true feature back. Offense becomes much more predictable when Shonn Greene comes onto the field. Greene is a non-threat to catch a pass out of a backfield so you have one less receiver to account for. Defenses can load up in the box and if its a pass they don't have to worry about Greene whatsoever -- leaving our TEs and WRs covered with minimal holes to exploit for Sanchez. McKnight is a role player at best, and he isn't a threat to bust a run up the middle. Trent would have to be accounted for at all times by a defense. He can run inside and outside, and he can catch passes out of the backfield and break tackles. On a play action play, the defense is first duped by the fake run but then after they have to account for T-Rich on a swing pass or breaking out into a route. On a 3rd down, he may block or may he release into a route...or he could take a shovel pass up the middle. The MLB and safeties can't just focus on Dustin Keller and our other TEs. Having a running back like that opens up the offense for Sanchez, Keller, Santonio, Kerley, Schilens, and what other weapons we have. T-Rich can also make plays on his own with the ball in his hands like few backs in the NFL can. We aren't going to fill all those holes in one draft. You fill holes in rounds 1 and 2, hopefully round 3, but then the rest is for depth and development. Taking a 1st and 2nd and ensuring that you fill a hole at RB while also boosting your QB (priority #1 for us) is huge. We then have a 3rd to try and fill one of those holes with a player like Bruce Irvin or Mitch Schwartz, or a safety like Janzen Jackson or George Iloka. We can find a nice WR in the 5th round as it's the deepest position in the draft -- guys like Marvin McNutt could very well be available. Tannenbaum isn't looking to move up for T-Rich so we have a better Madden offense. He is doing it to help the team's investment in Mark Sanchez. A feature 3-down RB opens up an offense like no other offensive position.
4/20 is over dude Kyle Wilson is our future #2, why are we trading him plus a 1st and 2nd for a Running Back, when we can just rebuild the line, give Greene another year and see what he does, then next year when the RB class is supposedly deep grab Michael Dyer in the 2nd You dont trade up into the top 10 for a RB, NEVER, you rarely trade up for a RB period unless its in the mid rounds
Trent Richardson is a complete player. That's the fascination. The Jets haven't had a young back who was a complete player in a long time.
Exactly. I'd love Trent on this team. If he slips past 10, I'd gauge to see what the price of moving up is. But it's hard to see him slipping that far, and I'm not willing to pay the price to move up further.
If he somehow made it to Jax, we'd be stupid to not explore the opportunity to pull the trigger on getting him. If he made it to 10 then Tanny should be fired for not putting together a deal to jump up and grab him at that spot. But T-Rich dropping out of the top 5 right now it seems is a less than 10% chance.
Stop using numbers like that to judge a corners performance. If you want to use numbers to judge a corner you need numbers like opposing QB rating when targetted. FTR, he was ranked 51 out of the 66 CB's who saw more than 50% of the snaps last year in opposing QB rating when targeted. Other meaningful numbers would be how many times targeted/snap, yards allowed, td's allowed, things like that. Saying he "certainly shined" based on number of tackles, passes defended and a lousy two interceptions is beyond ridiculous. Watch the games or at least use some reasonable stat metrics. Also, Kyle Wilson never started a game at #1 or #2 corner last season. We may have started the game in a nickel package and that may have made him marked as a "starter" on a stat sheet somewhere but he was never more than a nickel corner. I'm questioning whether you even watched him play or if you just looked at some relatively meaningless numbers and jumped to conclusions about his level of play. Sure he played well last year, but the numbers you're presenting do nothing to describe his play. No NFL team is putting 1st round value on Kyle Wilson at this point and hopefully the Jets aren't even thinking about trading up to #3 to take a RB.
Key pick is going to be Minnesota. If they go Blackmon instead of Kalil, I think you could see Richardson dropping a bit.
Teams don't normally draft RBs as high as they once did now that almost everybody uses 2. I agree that if he gets past 5 he could easily get to 10 and we can only hope Tannenbaum would try to move up then to take him. If they are serious about making the offense run oriented then it would be a no-brainer to try and get him.
I love the idea of drafting Richardson and would cheer the pick, no matter what it cost us, but the logical side of me hates the idea of giving up the house and particularly not future picks. Read the other day that we tried to trade a future first to get up for Percy Harvin in 2009. What would you rather have? Kyle Wilson or Percy Harvin? My major difficulty is that the Jets have a habit of making a series of moves, each based off the assumption that the previous ones will be wholly successful. All of that said, if Tannenbaum and Ryan believe they will be fired if they don't succeed in 2012 there is a lot of motivation to go out and spend the next guy's picks on talent they can use now.
It's always possible that they try to move back, fail in the attempt and then go Tannehill because they're desperate to change the conversation in Cleveland from "Browns never find All-Pros" to "Browns can't draft a good QB for their life".
If we take an early RB as our #1 pick, I'm going to be sad. It makes absolutely no sense. Clearly we need a linesman much moreso than a premium running back prospect. If we trade up for anyone it should be Kalil IF he drops past #5 or 6, otherwise they shouldn't bother. At least we'd be addressing a real need. I'm tired of the myth that Shonn Greene can't be our #1 RB. He is perfectly fine. We don't need Richardson.
The Browns need hope, and yes Trent is an absolute beast of a player, but what is a RB gonna do for that team? They are rebuilding and are a decent ways away from being anywhere near contention. A QB or a WR could have up to twice as long of a shelf life as a RB... Whats the point in running a great RB into the ground when theres nothing around him... Look at MJD- leading rusher, but the offense was terrible. A QB is easier to build around, or even a great WR, and they will be there longer at a higher level than the RB. Yeah, Trent could be the best RB for the next 8 years, but what will that do if you have a QB who cant throw more than 15 yards on a windy day and your best receiving option is Greg Little? Thats the argument against Richardson at 4... I dont agree 100% with it, but theres definitely some truth to it.
I disagree! I don't see anything wrong with making a bid for a player you strongly belief in, but this year we are paying the price. We are cash strapped, and we need players next year.
I may be a bit late to this but if we are looking for a RB that can catch, block, run inside, and get to the outside to complement the ground n pound, what about taking Bernard Pierce in the fifth or sixth round. The man did wonders for Temple and is an all around back, can help in the red zone. He would look great in a set next to Tebow and Greene. There is the history of injuries but I think he would be a steal if we could pick him up in the later rounds.
