Why is this a surprise to anyone? The entire NFL knew what was to come when Watson took this step to get closer to being back on the field. If you don't think that the Cleveland Browns had things like this baked into the pie when they constructed this deal, you're not giving anyone the credit they deserve. This too shall pass.
Let's not forget that all these WR and big signings on Offense assume that your QB will be clicking on all cylinders. I think the common denominator between the Jets and Dolphins are their unspectacular QBs. Miami can gauge what Tua can or can't do. But Can anyone besides NCJets reassure me Zach is gonna shine next year? He went from a 65 to an 86 passer rating from start to finish last season so I guess that's progress. But those pictures in my head of him throwing passes at the ground , sky high and out in left field on game day haunt me ..smh
Don't ever count put player greed, and the NYS personal income tax rate for people making that kind of dough is ASTRNOMICAL. I sincerely believe that is the reason why NY rarely, if ever, gets star talent to sign here. Besides, NY is a toilet bowl. It's racist, wretched State Government notwithstanding, (South) Florida is MUCH more appealing as is the Tampa area. Even Jacksonville would be a much more desirable destination to most sane people than freezing your ass off, paying 35% of your salary in NY.
Basically its a reason why the Jets will NEVER get a stadium of their own unless someone with Cohen level funds buys the team from Woody. Land too expensive, taxes too high, environment too toxic, people too invested in their own agendas.
That’s my take exactly… I think we missed out on Anderson and Cooper because we didn’t want to “overspend”…I get it…I’d rather our GM be on the stingy side as opposed to what Mac did. But I agree there comes a time when you have to pay…even if it’s a bit more. I think JD was thinking next year would be the year to do that…this is really year 2 of the rebuild, so he figured next year was the time, but then as he sees so many AFC teams go bonkers with top players, he realized that shit, even if we do improve with the draft this year, we are still losing ground to most of the teams in the AFC, and that means our record will not look much better…I think he feels like maybe he can withstand another 4 to 6 win season, but not two…he needs to show real improvement in the wins column, and based on what’s happening in the AFC, that is going to be really hard. agree one very good draft, and could be great if Wilson pans out (though I am not at all convinced he will based on the performance last year…we can make all the excuses with OL and injured receivers we want, but he threw WAY too many balls in the dirt even when the scrubs we had were open…I just think a truly great QB would not look as bad as he looked even with those circumstances…but we’ll see…I’m supportive but skeptical) so yeah…I like JD a lot, and I think he’s been better than anyone we’ve had since Parcells or I guess Tannenbaum before Tannenbaum went off the deep end with three player drafts. But like Tanny and Mac, JD really will go as far as Wilson can take us. I wonder if Wilson flops next year again, if Mac will draft another QB hIgh. in no way would I advocate getting rid of JD, I do think overall he’s done a very good job rebuilding the roster, but had he been a bit more aggressive in free agency, it could have been a GREAT job. And at some point, you gotta start winning
not to get too personal, but I actually agree with NC more often than not…but I don’t agree with calling other people names or calling them idiots when they disagree…I’m all about a fun debate and challenging points of view…just doesn’t need to get to name calling
The only way I can defend JD is if Wilson turns out to be a top 10 QB. I lost all faith in him when the most valuable pick we've ever had fell into our lap, a rebuilding gold mine, and he used it on a sucker pick. Zach Wilson was a late riser with no pedigree of success, especially against valid competition. But his throwing motion was...blah blah blah. He was the textbook definition of fools gold. A mid round gamble at best. I'm sorry but after one season it seems pretty obvious if Zach does come around, his ceiling is Baker Mayfield'ish. He looked nothing like the great QBs first years of recent past like Burrow, Herbert, Murrey, etc. I'm still not convinced he's isn't the 3rd best QB on our roster. This is going to get really ugly when at least one rookie QB this season, maybe more than one, turns out better than Wilson. And other year 2 guys continue to progress faster than him.
Well you could be right. Except i am willing to credit the entire scouting department, who had any QB they wanted after tl, with some kind of exhausitive selection process. I throw out 2021 for all the reasons previously posted. Could be he is the second best qb in a year of not great qb. Could be he will be a hall of famer. Could be he is just terrible.Could be anything in between. Why people have such harsh opinions gven such a small and skewed sample Size is subject to caution. Sure the pick had enormous value, but they needed a qb. Waiting till this draft doesnt seem like a good idea
yeah. we shoulda tanked so we got Trevor... who all evidence shows was just about as bad as Zach last year but is " a generational talent"
No, i think ouchy's point has nohing to do with tl. He is saying the value receved from trading the number 2 pick far out weighs the value from zw. He is not a zw fan. Begs the question of who he thinks thejets should be playing at qb. I don't recall him stating an answer, but perhaps he did.
He doesn't want people to remember but at one point he wanted the Jets to draft DeVonta Smith with their second selection overall.
The name rhymes with Ma'am Arnold. In which case we'd be paying him $20 million this year and facing a draft with QB prospects who are likely to turn out to be bigger reaches than Wilson was. Wilson may not work out, most of the evidence so far indicates he won't, but he was the right pick at the time.
I was calling to bring in a veteran to guide team through a rebuilding year while we filled out the roster. Wanted Minshew, who Phily got for a 6th. Also entertained the idea of trading down and taking a QB that fell to us. Never entertained the idea that we should stick with Sam. You always go back to that, even though for most of draft season I was vocal about trading down and gaining a fortune in capital - while also getting Smith. The main argument around here last season was we were in position to get a QB with our pick, and how much capital we'd have to give up to get a QB this season. Now we are talking about giving both 2nds and our 3rd, plus a huge contract, to get Zach a #1 WR. The irony isn't lost one me.
That would have been a much better pick than Zach Wilson. Devonta Smith is going to be a pro Bowl WR at some point and maybe better than that. Zach Wilson is most likely going to be a guy sitting on his front porch in 50 years telling everybody he would have been a great QB if... I'd much rather have traded the #2 into the QB frenzy last year than picked either of them but Smith over Wilson was a no-brainer if the Jets were actually going to make the pick.
Yeah yeah yeah. Go make someone else hang themselves. You wanted to trade for Jimmy G. I'm sure that would be great to.
I most likely thought Jimmy G could help Lafleur install the offense. Combine that with a pick of Devonta Smith and the Jets actually would have had something going on offense last year without getting a 5th round pick or a lifelong practice squad guy in over center.
Come to think of it if Jimmy G's trade market is really as bad as the pundits think it is right now the Jets might want to make a run at him. It's sounding like he's a 3rd round pick or thereabouts and that would be a great value for a team trying to get back on it's feet again.
Right or wrong, agree or disagree, the Jets are NOT bringing a guy to create a QB competition, and I doubt Jimmie G is willing to accept a pure backup role yet.
