Penn State fan, OSU played the Lions 4 times with VG there, never saw him make one tackle, had to ask my son who he was
It is obvious that it is just a matter of time before Smith takes over as the starter. Sanchez looks like Sanchez and Smith would have started last night if he had been healthy. A good week of practice did not change anything. Sanchez was awful after the first drive and left 6-14 points on the field. We just have to wait at this point.
Honestly though I think the OP is right. I feel like whoever the QB is they will at least be serviceable under the system. I mean it's just two preseason games but guys are getting open and Gates/Hill/Kerley all look pretty good. Combine that with an allegedly good defense and run game and I really don't think we're at the bottom of the barrel as every "expert" likes to place us at.
This is true, we aren't going to be bottom of the barrel. But imagine how much better we could be by not giving away points and capitlizing on opportunities in the RZ? Sanchez has given away so far: 7 via pick 6 at least 3, maybe 7 via INT in RZ 3 by not understanding clock. For a team that lacks explosive playmakers on offense right now, these are the mistakes we cannot have.
That last play of half was ridiculous and sums up Sanchez perfectly, STUPID, as starting QB you have to know how much time is on the clock, they had time for one pass and if they didn't score kick a field goal,, instead Sanchez runs around for too long, throws a crap pass, wasted the time on the clock and they come away with nothing,,, This is his 5th year in the league, He shouldn't be making rookie mistakes.
We're going to be bottom of the barrel if Sanchez is the starting QB this year. For a Rex Ryan team that probably means 5-11 or thereabouts. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the Jets high level meetings at this point. If Idzik really wants to hire his own guy next year all he needs to do is let Rex win all the arguments now because then it is Rex's baby all year long and when it turns into an ugly baby Rex is gone. If on the other hand Idzik is really trying to change the perceptions in those meetings and trying to get Rex to go with people like Geno Smith, Ryan Spadola and Brian Winters then he's extending Rex a life line, trying to keep the season from becoming a referendum on Rex's failed choices.
Don't let the Rexaholics see you post this stuff Brad or they'll burn your house down. 5-11 should get Rex a one way ticket to palookaville as those back to back AFCCG losses seems like a long time ago instead of "only yesterday". Idzik just might be giving Rex all the rope he needs to hang himself by letting him pump Sanchez over Geno. While I don't blame Rex for not putting his job in the hands of a rookie, his stubborn support for Hairband will be the nail in the coffin. 5-11 might not be bad enough to give us a shot at TB, but the Jets had better find out THIS SEASON if they do have their QB of the future or go back to the well and draft another candidate.
I think this is huge and why I'm all for starting Geno the whole season. I mean, we know what we have in Sanchez and with a stacked QB draft class next year, why not see what Geno has and if he flops use your high pick on a QB?
Someone please explain to me who Ryan was supposed to play in Sanchez' place the past four seasons and how that isn't more on Mike T than anybody? Brunnell? McElroy? Let's face it, Ryan's "loyalty" to Sanchez last season was nothing more than a wise choice to keep Tebow off the field and to get him the hell out of here. Mission accomplished. He played McElroy last year and McElroy squandered the opportunity and just does not have enough physical talent for the NFL. The Jets have never ever had a viable alternative to Sanchez on the roster in Ryan's tenure until now. You people talk of Ryan's loyalty to Sanchez as if the Jets had a legitimate alternative. There is one now. Let's see how long it takes before Smith gets the job. I say half a season at most.
I'm in agreement on this. If the Jets don't have a strong feeling that Geno Smith is the guy going into next year they need to pull one of those strong QB candidates out of that draft and have him and Geno go at it until one of them proves good enough to win in the NFL. If you don't have a QB you don't have openers at the big NFL table and right now the Jets don't have a QB. Hopefully they'll get a good enough look at Geno this year to either confirm him as the guy going forward or bump him down the depth chart a bit in 2014 with a better option above him.
Can't remember which play it was, the INT or the grounding, but Gates was wide open in the EZ and was going nuts when MS failed to see him. How does MS NOT see him? I just don't get it.
Star syndrome? Gotta be the star? I'm running towards the end zone, if I score somehow it will make up for all the screw ups? Everybody who has ever played a sport at any level has that fantasy track running in his mind where he's the big star and the most important player on the field. Good professional athletes turn that off and see the game as it is, with whatever is in front of them determining what they do next. Wanna-be's stay stuck in star mode trying to make everything be about them. In the process they often make everything about them.
