That should be a surprise to nobody. You generally don't beat your kids one time. I get tired of these high profile people acting like the time they got caught was an isolated incident or their worst moment. Ray Rice is a woman beater, not a guy who hit his girlfriend that one time. Peterson is a child abuser, not a guy who let his temper get the best of him one time. You either have an anger issue or some sort of rationalization for your actions or you dont.

People don't go to jail unless they break a law. In Texas, Peterson's actions were legal. From Texas Penal Code Sec 9.61 PARENT-CHILD (a) The use of force, but not deadly force, against a child younger than 18 years is justified: (1) if the actor is the child's parent or stepparent or is acting in loco parentis to the child; and (2) when and to the degree the actor reasonably believes the force is necessary to discipline the child or to safeguard or promote his welfare.
No charges were filed against Rice. Suspended a year. AP indicted on criminal child abuse charges. Reinstated.
