You have got to be kidding me? Trump?????? I'd rather have needles stuck in my eyes and all my teeth pulled than have that flaming a$*hole as the owner of my favorite sports team. Think about how the NFL went out of its way to keep the man out of the league back when the USFL existed. Trump was such a good owner, he took all those other nice rich men who owned USFL franchises and convinced them to move to the fall and compete with the NFL, thinking that the USFL would be another AFL and would merge. When the NFL told Trump to pound salt and as the USFL began to sink into financial trouble, Trump convinced the league to sue the NFL for anti-trust violations. The USFL "won" that lawsuit and was awarded $3. Do you work for Trump? Do you know that he demands and gets the best from his employees???? How do you know he would be a good owner??? How do you know that Johnson does not demand the best from his employees? How do you know that Johnson is not pissed with the state of the Jets? How do you know that Johnson has not given Mangini and Tannenbaum an ultimatum regarding next year's performance of the team? I just don't get it. I'm not saying that Mangini or Tannenbaum have performed well this year, but most fans on this board wanted Mangini as the coach. The alternative was Mike Tice - remember? Mangini was worth taking a chance. Hiring a retread is not the way to go. How did Johnson screw this up? And what would Trump have done differently 2 years ago??? And don't give me the usual crap you dish out - hire some coach away from another NFL team like you used to say about that "genius" in Baltimore - Brian Billick- who still hasn't found a QB or an offense and was easily the worst coach in the NFL this season.
This is another amazing, incredible post. Does anybody know any of the real facts? Does anybody follow NY sports. If Dolan had purchased the Jets, he would have given the team to his son - just as he did with the Knicks and Rangers. It was Johnson who wanted to spend the money to build the WSS and Dolan who blocked it. And Dolan's handlilng of the Knicks has been one of the most embarrasing runs of ownership in the history of sports. The Knicks are a train wreck and a laughing stock. Great insight!!!!
Cowher has unequivocally stated he is not coaching in 2008. Period. Maybe it will work out well for the Jets if the Tangini alliance fails in 08 and the Jets are in the market next year.
Jet fans need to realize that owners don't make teams win - GMs, coaches and players do. Being a hands on owner doesn't guarantee success - look at the Redskins and the Falcons. There are no more hands on owners than Snder and Blank. Johnson has done his best to make good hires. Parcells left Johnson at the alter. When the Jets hired Edwards, there were no other "Parcells" types out there. The hot coaches in 2000 were Fox and Lewis. Lewis has been a complete failure and will likely get fired after this season. Fox has gone downhill after the 03 Super Bowl. What did Johnson do wrong? Who were the assistants that he should have broken the band for??? Did Parcells bring a championship to Dallas? Gibbs to Washington???? As for the stadium, I still think the WSS would have been great for the Jets and NYC. Johnson was visionary with that idea. Too bad some politicians, the Dolans, and some whiny Jet fans who wanted tailgating rather than the best stadium in sports on the biggest stage in sports for the Jets, or who wanted the stadium close to their homes in LI so they didn't have to commute to NYC blocked this move. When that fell apart, the only choice Johnson had, as a businessman, was to get on board with the Giants as he did. Johnson could have easily taken this team out of NY after the WSS stadium was opposed. If he waited, the Giants would have built on their own and he would have been left starting from square one , having to spend over $1 billion in a location that was less than ideal, be it Queens, Yonkers, Aqueduct or whatever. At least the Jets will play in a state of the art, top notch stadiuim in 2010 and the Jets will be in better shape to attract free agents with a first class stadium and a first class practice facility near by. The Rooney family may be considered good owners, but they went decades without winning. Same with the Maras. The 49ers won for 15 years - was it Walsh or the Debartolos??? Is Jones the reason Dallas won in the 90's or was is the dozens of draft picks they got by fleecing other teams??? Let's face it - the Cowboys personnel was so good in the 90s that Jones hired Switzer and still won a title. Is Kraft such a great owner or do you think it helps that the Patriots drafted well, stole a coach from the Jets who turned out to be a "genius" and fell into a star QB??? This is not baseball and the Jets aren't the Yankees. In the NFL you can't just throw money at a problem and fix it. Besides, Steinbrenner would never have won anything with the Yankees after 1978 if he hadn't been suspended and people like Michaels were able to build a farm system. Otherwise, Steinbrenner would have remained the joke that he was, trading away Jeter and Williams for some mediocre veterans like he did in the 80's and early 90s.
I would agree with the other posters who feel he should sell this team! Not so sure if he should sell it to Donald Trump i dont think he would fare much better as an owner lets not forget about the USFL!
We went 5 years with Herm and Bradway pointing fingers at each other for inept personnel management/acquisition, and I think the blame went to both of them. It was actually publicized that Bradway was phoning his job in from Atlantic City for the latter portion of his tenure at GM. What did Woody do? He demotes Bradway to Director of Player Personnel and puts an accountant in his place. He allows his HC to cavort with a conference rival barely any distance into a disaster season for a new job and let's his new accountant GM bring in yet another rookie HC (his bestest friend in the whole wide world) who hasn't achieved any true success at a coordinator position. The rookie HC hired a bunch of other rookie coaches. I understand there's wasn't a lot to choose from in the HC pool last offseason, but the upper level of management went almost completely untouched. Does any of this sound like it's something done with the balls to demand success for his franchise? Woody is an absentee owner. If he wanted to truly send a message 2 years ago, he would have cleaned house instead of just rearranging the jobs.
While I like Mangini, your post points out some of the real problems with the Jets since Woody took over. I still can't believe Bradway was kept on the staff and I really believe part of not bringing in a top football executive was it would undermine Tanny who is essentially a numbers guy.
I like this question. 1) Demand the firing of both coordinators and spend $$ on two quality guys. 2) Have a one on one with Mangini and explain to him that if there is not significant improvement he is gone next year 3) Give Westoff a bonus and ask him to give a speech to the entire organization entitled " It's nice to have balls" 4) Kick Jmac in the nuts on his way out 5) Cut Drob, Graham and possibly B Thomas. 6) See if I can get something of value for Vilma, Coles and Pennington. Either way Penny is off the books. GONE 7) Find veteran OL talent so we dont have to reach on a tackle with a top 5 pick. Address the DL and LB situation the same way if at all possible. If not, beef up with draft picks. 8 Send hate mail to J mac just for fun 9) Sign a kicker to compete with Nugent. Light a fire under his ass and se if he becomes more reliable. 10) Sign a veteran QB to compete with Clemens for the job. May the best man win. 11) Demand sex from at least 3 of the flag girls. That's all I have so far. Must be nice to be Woody
Charls Dolan blocked the WSS because they viewed it as competition to their own venue, MSG. Also, You have zero proof that Charles would have gave the team to Baby Jimmy. Also, The Kincks are a huge laughing stock but you can't knock the Rangers, or the fact that the Garden, run by Baby Jimmy pulls in the biggest concert acts in the world. To compare everything to the Knick is shortsighted. Is Jim Dolan a pomopus ass? Hell yeah, but if his dad purchased the team I would bet my life they would be getting a stadium of their own. Maybe it would be on the westside, maybe it would be in Queens, but you can sure as hell know it wouldn't be shared with the Giants.
are the pats doing better under kraft than under victor kiam? wasn't bellichek a retread from cleveland? were the jets, pats , cowboys, giants much better teams when tuna left than when he arrived? didn't the ravens get much better tratement from the refs/league when modell was the owner? doesn't the cowboys, pats get better treatment from the league than the jet and raiders? if you don't think an owner makes a difference, talk to a lions fan sometime.
I do not think that Cowher is that great of a coach. I would not want him as the Jets coach, and I would certainly not give him the level of control he would want.
If I were Woody Johnson, I'd be booking the best room at the best Hotel in Rio DeJanero for the upcoming Festival season. The Jets are making him oogobs of money win or lose so why worry bout it???
Actually, that's not true, in relative terms. Take a guess where the Jets rank in total revenue in the NFL - go ahead. I won't post back until you guess, but promise not to look it up.
Does that tell you that Woody is a great owner? Have you taken into account the huge boost in merchandising efforts the Jets have made? Or how much they have jacked up stadium prices since Woody bought the team? None of this has anything to do with the success of the team, it's how the success of the team is perceived from a marketing angle. It's pretty nice to have a 10 year pool of season ticket holders, prospective season ticket holders, and brainwashed consumers looking for easy-buy market items built on symbolism and media hype. Welcome to the largest consumer fondue pot on the table. Thy name is New York. Now look at the stands on Sunday.
one of the things i have completely lost touch of over the years is the hierarchy in the "front" office..... the front office in sports is a very very interesting phenomenon...it ususally consists of baby faced educated newcomers or older, experienced retreads that know how to get into and/or stay in the "circle" not very different from a fortune 500 company for that matter. i really do not know who or what fills the gap between tannenbaum and the owner. is that where this chap cross comes in? some teams have the owner as the obvious top dog and he/she defers all football operation decisions to a person or persons that have titles such as head of football operations, VP of football ops, etc etc. Do we have someone like that??? the GM can be titled with that as well but IMO, it should be a separate individual that has an NFL track record. my perfect set up would be.... owner - head of football ops - GM - asst GM/salary cap. obviously your coaching and scouting staff comes next. jil
I would bet that after the stadium is built and he gets through gang raping the season ticket holders the revenue and valuation of the team is going to look very good regardless of the crap he puts on the field.
