When you have the best defensive coordinator in football you can do that. When you have Bob sutton........you can't
That's a fair point. The more I think about this, the more I'm getting tired of this 3-4 anyway. I wouldn't even mind if a different coach wanted to change to a 4-3; as long as he has a good track record with Defense.
Yeah you're completely right. New England utilizes the 4-3 when it suits the purpose. Everyone here is so afraid of change because they've spent the last 3 years watching one of the most non-flexible coaches in NFL history.
I just think the Jets would be limiting themselves bigtime if they only looked at coaches that fit the defensive scheme. A great coach is a great coach regardless of scheme- if they think that a 4-3 coach can take the Jets to the promised land, you sign him bottom line. Also, the transition back to the 4-3 is a natural move for these guys and can easily be implemented in an offseason. Are we going to keep the 3-4 just to get value out of Bryan Thomas? Almost every other defensive player had just as much success with Donnie Henderson or the previous 4-3 scheme they played in. They just don't have any consistent pass-rushers right now. I do see the benefit of continuity, but I think we might miss out on a good coach if the Jets are inflexible.
I dont thing Spagnolo or any other coach should be ruled out because of defensive scheme. Maybe a 4-3 scheme wouldn't be so bad. Most of our personnel have played in it before and it may benefit someone like Gholston who cant seem to grasp playing LB. He'd probably be more comfortable in the 4-3.
Sutton would be gone if Mangini is fired. My point was that a 4-3 head coach could be hired. Then, considering the 3-4 scheme the Jets have utilized these past 3 seasons and considering the personnel in place, the new head coach could possibly bring aboard, as his defensive coordinator, a coach with a 3-4 background.
This could very well be true. I'm not ruling out getting a 4-3 guy; I'm just saying that there may be a setback because the players have to readjust to a different base defense with different schemes -- whereas, a 3-4 guy will use the same base with some different schemes, which the players would (most likely) pick up quicker.
Exactly There's nothing inherently better about the 3-4, its really all about utilizing personnel. Guys like Demarcus Ware are going to be successful in any scheme, but best utilized in the 3-4. I'm not sure the Jets have any guys that are so good in the 3-4 that its worth keeping. Like I've said, whatever gets me a pass-rush, I'm down with whether its 3-4 or 4-3 right now with the available personnel.
If anything, I think moving to a 4-3 would help out Gholston a lot. What concerns me is Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas... Calvin Pace has only been successful in a 3-4 scheme, and Thomas... ugh...
Wasn't Chad noodle arm? I think everyone would want to play that beat up jalopy of a team you have right now.
I can't answer that right now but I don't think thats the point. The head coaching market is hardly overflowing with great candidates and I really don't want the team to limit itself by insisting on the defensive scheme.
Some names off the top of my head: Brian Billick Steve Spagnuolo Rex Ryan Jim Schwartz Doug Marrone And those are just guys who are available; after the firings around the rest of the league you might be able to add Jon Gruden and Lovie Smith to that list. Any coaching search should involve a call to Bill Cowher and Pete Carroll as well.
Mike Smith. Tony Sparano. John Harbaugh. Playoffs- all three of 'em. I don't think that at this time last year many fans would have called those three fellows great head coaching candidates. Leslie Frazier. Jim Schwartz. Todd Haley. All three will be NFL head coaches soon enough. Nobody knows how good they will be, but it's near certainty they will get a shot. Do they have the name power of Bill Cowher? No. But who was Bill Cowher before 1992? I wish this board would stop with the Cowher stuff. I highly doubt he would coach the Jets and it doesn't sound like he wants to coach anywhere in 2009.
