The draft pick isn't the problem. I'm sure if able to wed look into trading the #16 pick but his big contract is what prevents us from making the deal. Mario will get big bucks, bucks that we can't afford.
IMO it's irrelevant, because the Jets don't have the money to get a premier FA OLB. Even if they did, I think it would be foolish to go that way. This is a GREAT draft for pass rushing OLB prospects who could be real studs and be very cheap for a while (Mercilius, Perry, Ingram, Curry, Adrian Hamilton, Irvin, a kid whose first name I forget but his last name is McClellin from Boise St.) The team has glaring needs at RT and S. While there are some good S prospects that will probably go in the 2nd and 3rd rounds (Markelle Martin, Harrison Smith, and Winston Guy), imo the best way to address the Jets HUGE needs at S are to sign two FAs if possible, but at least one, then draft one. It would be better for the RT spot to be manned by a veteran, or at least have a veteran for insurance in case the kid they draft and/or Ducasse aren't ready/able to hold down the RT spot. Taking a project in the 2nd round is stupid, imo. Do you remember a player named Ducasse? Did you learn nothing? 2nd round picks, should be solid starters or at the very least very good rotational players by halfway to late through their rookie season or for certain by their sophomore season. There are a lot better OLB prospects in this draft than Jones.
Im not saying its likely to happen, but its certainly possible (there are many ways around the cap, restructuring sanchez as well as draft trades for starters) And look at the guys picked around Ducasse, that wasnt exactly a monster 2nd round. Dexter McCluster ? Arrelious Benn, Gerhart ? Mays ?Clausen? Kindle ? PRice ? Cunningham ? Ben Tate ? Hardesty ? Golden Tate ? Most of that second round was dog shit, there were only a very select few guys in that 2nd round who even came close to earning their worth, and unfortunately 2 of them ended up on the Pats. Again I dont think Williams is likely under any scenario, but there are some worthwhile FA OLBs who will certainly cost less than him and still be solid.
I believe you. Would be nice to have that guy rushing the QB for us but Calvin Pace will have to do.
Tanny's restructuring of contracts is what helped cause the tight cap problem the Jets have now, just as his trading draft picks for more expensive players did. If he hopes to stay a GM in the NFL, he has to learn how to get talent in the draft without always trading up or trading for more expensive veterans. Yes, the 2nd round of that draft was bad, but the point still stands. It's stupid to draft a project in the 2nd round. If you don't think anyone is worth of a 2nd round pick, then you trade out of the round. You either trade down, or trade your pick for a 3rd round pick in next year's draft. You don't stay and take a project who's more likely to bust than develop. Yes, there are other FA OLBs who would be solid, but the Jets don't need "solid" (unless your definition of solid varies widely from mine). IMO they need a stud, a dominant pass rusher, not another guy who's an average or mediocre pass rusher.
