Don't see any problems? Ok you lock up Revis 5-6 years. Then you lock up KcKlevin for 5-6 years.

First those are some pretty large rookie contracts at both CB positions.

Second let us assume they both pan out (the way we all would want them too). That means in the same year, or consecutive years, you will have to negotiate new contracts with both players. Now keeping in mind that above average/elite CBs are some of the highest paid players in the league, also taking into account the inflation of contracts in 5-6 years, AND the possibilty of NO cap, and you will have 2 BIG contracts. All at the same position, CB.

So there is a VERY good chance we will lose one player to FA. Now it might be worth it in the end. But it can come back and bite us in the ass. It is not like one will be a 1st rounder and the other CB a 2nd or 3rd (which would mean an easier rookie contract to swallow).

IMO, it might be a better idea, to reach at another area, spread the wealth to other positions. Then again it might work out. But like I said reaching is the WORST possible scenario this year.

you don't not take somebody cause they might leave in free agency in 6 years. u take the best player available for your teams schemes thats how you build a good team.

i would love to get one of the 2 top cb's in the draft, only if the others are gone, mcfadden, gholston, the longs e.c.t, if its a cb i hope it meant we traded out of 6 and picked up some more draft picks, lets be honest, niether mcklevin nor cramartie is worth the #6 pick

Really....Lots of GMs put 3 high draft picks in the defensive backfield....happens all the time.

    (Revis 1,14)(Miller 2,25)

Especially when their best receiver is so old they wont take his contract beyond the two years they owe him....

The problem is the people on this board would rather draft guys that can run fast and not catch.....year in year out its the same thing.

Here are some RBs that will probably be available in the 3rd or 4th rounds:

    Felix Jones, Arkansas
    Chris Johnson, East Carolina
    Matt Forte, Tulane
    Jamaal Charles, Texas
    Tashard Choice, Georgia Tech
    Kevin Smith, Central Florida

    Um...my problem came from:

If you have to Reach from 6, take the best WR available.

The fact that you couldn't even name a specific WR kind of says "hey, I know it's a major reach but we REALLY need one." Thats not how you draft.

I didn't say anything about wanting another CB...

And what are you talking about with this:

    ?

    Who fits that description?

No way Felix Jones and Chris Johnson make it out of the 2nd round.

Jones might even go in the first.

Forte and Charles should be first day picks, while Smith and Choice could, but shouldn't fall into day 2.

    Who fits that description ?????

75% of the board. Every April.

#2 CB is probably the least important position on the starting 22. Yet, here we are contemplating spending 6 overall on it....When we dont have a #1 WR...

And as to Naming one, I prefer Sweed, however others prefer someone else...Kelly,or Doucet... for instance...

The draft is a crazy thing. There was no way Quinn was going to fall in the 1st, but he did.

I mean, sometimes teams pass on guys like Sapp and Wilfork for Becht and Vilma:grin:

Here's the scoop on Revis' contract. We seemed protected on every front, and I like how at best, we can (more than likely) buy back Revis' 6th year below Franchise Tag value leaving us to Tag another player at another position.

This is why i've come to greatly respect Mike T. He's number crunching football nerd and I'm damn glad he's in my FO.

Point being that, I know at #6, a CB will require more money, but I'd leave Mike T to figure it out. Yes, it's possible that when both their contracts are up, we'd be stuck with a few scenarios.

    1) They both bust (which we already know won't happen, at least with Revis. See Revis highlights on 2007 season) and we let them end their contract and simply go.
    2) They both turn out to be shutdown corners. Which would give us the flexibility to then choose to keep 1 of 2 shutdown corners. Which to me, is better than letting the only shutdown corner go on our DB roster.
    3) McKelvin/Cromartie end up being a bust (it happens on every draft) which by then, u cut ur loses and let them go.

Either way, u don't NOT draft a player because in the future 6-7 years from now, they're gonna wanna get paid. They all do. They have agents and they're players. If u wanna play it safe and save the team some money 6-7 years from now, then we should draft a Kicker or Punter. Those come real cheap around contract time.

You're not even going to try to understand what I'm saying, are you?

What WR is even a top 10 talent in this draft?

What WR do you suggest picking at 6?

Is that WR really worth a top 10 pick?

Is that WR a better fit for us at 6 than other top 10 talents?

At least all the guys the Lions did it they got top talents in those drafts...Rogers may have busted but he and Andre Johnson were both considered top 5 talents...Mike Williams was a legit top talent at WR and still had a ton of fans on draft day...Roy Williams was a great pick then and now...CJ is a great talent and came after two of those first 3 bousted anyway.

No one in this draft is anywhere near the prospect those 4 guys were.

this is a good point on mike t working revis contract. lets get real here we got revis a number 1 corner in the league for less then market value for 2 years. thats worth the what 2 weeks he held out of training camp this year. but we were all calling mike t a retard and stubborn for not giving in and compromising for a 4 year deal. yeah our front office is run by retards alright, we should sign all first rounders to 4 year deals so they dont hold out of training camp for a few days and reach for a wide out cause even though a corner would be the best player available, we took one LAST YEAR in the first and after all in SIX YEARS he might leave via free agency.

Mike Williams hadn't played a game of football in a year, he was a total reach, no matter how many 'fans' he had on draft day. Rogers I sort of agree with, although you never know who would have taken him and where if the Lions hadn't drafted him. You can't just go by scouting reports. The draft hardly ever plays out the way the 'scouts' say it will. And you never know how many teams knew Rogers was a totally useless stoner; sometimes the teams that get fooled on draft day are the ones that take the 'safe' pick by taking a player that is projected very high. Obviously their 'prospects' were completely incorrect for at least 50% of the Lions' WR drafting spree. Whose to say the 'prospects' aren't completely incorrect now? Does the name Anquan Boldin ring a bell?

Roy Williams was an excellent pick, and while CJ looks very talented he is a sophomore and the jury is out.

Yeah...I guess a few crazy things always happen. I just can't see Felix Jones falling any further than the beginning stages of round 2.

I realize all of that. That is the point I was making. But it is not as simple as, "Well if we are going to reach, get a CB because we have a need and the Pats want him." Well I could careless who the Pats want. And we are talking about "Reaching." And so if we have to reach, I would not want to dump more money in one position with cap ramifications. I would rather think long term, and spread the wealth into other positions.

And I am ONLY making this point because the question was asked if we had to reach. I would never say NOT to take a high value player just because of contract problems down the road. But that point is moot, since by the very definition of the question the player is not worth where you are taking him. So if that is the case, which is why I keep stressing this is the worst possible scenario, I would rather diminish as many negatives down the road as I can.

So to answer the question, IMO, if we had to reach, I would rather go WR, RB, or DE.

Normally, I would agree abt the #2 CB position. My problem is that our best #2 CB is soon-to-be 31 year old Hank Poteat. Looks like you're still holding out hope for Miller or David Barrett whom I believe had an entire thread dedicated to him, called, "Who's dick is David Barrett sucking that he's still on the team?!?".

Not to mention that we have nobody who could play FS. At least if we had a good or solid Safety, I could see why you'd say a #2 CB is over-hyped.
