I don't think that Fournette will be there at 6. My preference is that they trade down. I like OJ Howard as a TE but maybe not at 6. So CB's Ol's and WR's are in the mix.
I can agree, I can see a few teams taking him. I've even seen a CBS mock having him fall out of the first round. I don't think I'll be pleased with this draft unless Maccagnan adds more picks. We've both seen players fall unexpectedly come draft day so anyone could fall into our lap though. Either way if we select at 6, I want a playmaker, if no one fits the bill Maccagnan hopefully trades down.
I would be very happy with Howard, Hooker, Adams or Foster at #6. If one of those is there, I don't think the Jets should trade down. I like Fournette a lot, and wouldn't be angry if the Jets draft him, but I don't think he's the best choice. RBs have the shortest careers of any other position. I think it will be at least 2018, if not 2019 or 2020 before the Jets are serious contenders. If it's the latter, Fournette's career could be winding down or over by that point, or at best, maybe only have a couple of years left. Barring serious injury, I think all of the others I mentioned will be entering their primes and still have 5-6 years with the Jets at that point. I could be wrong, and if the Jets draft Fournette, I'll sure hope that I am and that Fournette's career will last as long as Peterson's.
I like the players you mentioned with Howard being my least overall 6th pick worthy .. IMO I just think we can still land one of the above mentioned players with the right trade down. Of course there's many factors involved .. including how Maccagnan values one of said players vs. how he values other players on his big board coupled with another pick(s) on a trade down.
I forgot to add this in my reply .. Would you move up .. even 1 slot .. to add any of the players you mentioned?
It's possible that we might be able to land one of those players if the Jets trade down, but not very likely imo. IMO the draft would have to fall perfectly for the Jets and they would have to be very lucky, and how often does that happen for the Jets? I understand not liking a TE at #6, but imo Howard is a playmaker, and with the combination of the Jets' dire need at the position and Morton's probably use of the TE in his offense, Howard would be one of the best possible picks we could make. He could have a HUGE impact on the offense and the effectiveness of either Petty or Hack as a receiver, in the Red Zone, in pass protection and in blocking for the rushing attack.
No. The Jets cannot afford to trade up unless they use Richardson to do so rather than draft picks. I'd rather get a pick outright for him rather than use him to move up in the draft.
I understand that, historically, certain positions have been rarely considered worthy of a top ten pick, but I'm not sure if in today's NFL this theory should necessarily still apply to tight ends. At least one wide receiver is selected almost every year in the top ten, and many are colossal busts, but that's a separate argument, yet to my thinking, a great tight end, particularly one who is a very good blocker and receiver, can positively impact an offense just as much as a great wideout. Most NFL scoring drives center around moving the chains, and only rarely involve home run type plays.I know the fear factor that a deep ball threat taking the top off of the defense has its value, but a fast tight end wreaking havoc through the center of a defense has its merits as well. Hell, teams have been using it against us with almost unlimited success for years now. That's why, if the scouting reports are accurate, I would have no problem with the Jets picking O.J. Howard at six. He'd be a great safety valve for a young quarterback, or McCown, especially playing behind a likely suspect line, plus he'd be an asset in the running game as well. IMHO, he'd be a great building block towards our future.
That's what I was thinking, using Richardson. It's going to be interesting to see what kind of value Maccagnan can get for him during the draft and what he does. I'm going to take a long look at Howard's tape though. As much as I like Petty, I think if Hackenberg is close or remotely close to being close, he's going to get the nod, and Hack throws a lot to TE's.
This is a strong possibility, unless they're ready to start the move on from Bortles. Pick the QB they like and let him sit for two years while they use the last two years of Bortles to either decide to re-up Bortles and trade the newbie or let Bortles go. I'd do that if I had doubts about Bortles at this point. The insight on Fournette is a good one though. Missing piece of the triad and all.
In regards to Howard...you need to look at not only what you'll get out of him at the TE spot but also the effect his presence has on the rest of the playmakers. You put Decker in the slot, Smith or Anderson to stretch the field with Enunwa on the other side, then add Howard to the mix...that's a pretty formidable O. Add to that Powell's contribution in both the run game and catching passes out of the backfield, that doesn't look too bad to me.
We had a hard time running the ball last year with our O-line NOT blocking. So lets get another running back!!!!
