I would rather have a stud WR/CB for the next ten years rather than a project player. Everyone is so enamored with Mariotta.
No, the crappy QB play overall cost them the game. Green Bay gifted the Jets 7 points early on and played truly awful defense for the entire 1st quarter giving 2 rare long drives to Geno and the Jets. From the point that they scored early in the 2nd the Jets had 8 drives for 3 points. It was the beginning of a stretch in which the Jets scored 4 TD's in 50 drives. Geno went 8-21 for 86 yards in those 8 drives and threw a pick from the GB 27. That's why the Jets lost that game by 1 score. Their QB wasn't capable of getting 1 score in nearly 3 quarters of play.
Answering a question with a question is not an answer at all. Answering a question with four questions shows that you have something to hide. If you want to nail down some variables, how about this?: If 12 Gauge wins the starting job, starts all of the games, looks as good as he did last year, and OSU wins the championship again next year would you still think Mariota was better?
I have nothing to hide. This is the Internet, nothing I say matters. But you've now presented a much better question. And my answer is, it depends. I have to watch the player play and I have to watch how he handles himself off the field. I can't answer today those what if's based on hypotheticals- it's too amorphous. My first inclination when I first saw him off the field was he had way too much Cam arrogance in him for such an unaccomplished player but the more I watched him I found him to actually be quite engaging and likeable and more confident rather than arrogant, he's just a big kid about it. So in that regard I think he may have "it" in off the field stuff but if he stumbles my first impressions will crop up again. I just can't tell enough about his game yet. I am not looking at him this year the way I looked at Mariota or Winston going into last year or Teddy or Carr going into their final college season. But that could change based upon how he actually plays and not hypotheticals. _
I think Marty M. cost us the GB game, first with the stupid pass play at the end of the 1st half which cost us the FG attempt, and then with the boneheaded timeout as Geno was lifting his leg and about to take the snap that took Kerley's TD off the board. Allowing Rodgers to go 90 yards down the field didn't help. But he is the best of the best. You're not gonna keep that offense contained for very long.
Thanks for asking. There are a number of things. Spread system or not, Mariota played at a very high, consistent level for three years. He has a high football IQ, so he should be able to pick up all the subtle nuances necessary, learn the system and make the necessary adjustments to succeed. He loves the game and has a great work ethic, so you know he will work hard to learn what he needs to learn. He has great character, so you don't have to worry about him getting into trouble off the field, getting distracted by the big city or creating a circus, and will be a great face for the franchise. He has great athleticism, prototypical size, a strong arm that can make all the throws, a quick release, can throw the ball very well on the run, and in spite of your thinking his accuracy isn't very good, I think it's very good. In short the only two characteristics that he doesn't have are that he's not a "once in a decade" type QB and he hasn't played in an NFL-type offense. Those are hardly overwhelming negatives. Neither Joe Montana nor Steve Young were thought to be once a decade type QBs. With regards to your bolded paragraph, I don't believe that one would waste a pick in taking Mariota. His floor is much higher than Geno's. Someone said that they though his floor is Alex Smith. One can win a SB with a QB like Alex Smith. Even a QB like Alex Smith is more valuable and more important than a stud WR, OLB, CB, or any other position you can name. QB is the most important position on the team and the hardest to fill adequately, bar none. When you are in a position to take one following a bad season and don't have to trade up, you have to roll the dice. The position is just too important and the Jets' need too great. Is it a gamble? Yes, but in order to achieve greatness, you have to take risks. You won't get there playing it safe. Would it hurt if the Jets took him and he didn't turn out to be much better than Alex Smith? Undoubtedly, but it would certainly hurt a lot less than if they passed on him and he wound up being a top 10 QB in the NFL, a perennial Pro Bowler, and winning a SB or two with another team.

Your post reminded me that Geno was a value pick. There were only 2 players in this round that turned into quality offensive starters. Bell and Lacy. One has the best QB in the NFL and one has a top 5 QB. Kiko Alonso is pretty good too. 39 Geno Smith West Virginia QB NY Jets 8 40 Cornellius (Tank) Carradine Florida State DE San Francisco from Tennessee 9 41 Robert Woods USC WR Buffalo 10 42 Menelik Watson Florida State OT Oakland from Miami 11 43 Johnthan Banks Mississippi State CB Tampa Bay 12 44 Kawann Short Purdue DT Carolina 13 45 Kevin Minter LSU ILB Arizona from San Diego 14 46 Kiko Alonso Oregon ILB Buffalo from St. Louis 15 47 Gavin Escobar San Diego State TE Dallas 16 48 Le'veon Bell Michigan State RB Pittsburgh 17 49 Johnathan Hankins Ohio State DT NY Giants 18 50 Jonathan Bostic Florida ILB Chicago 19 51 David Amerson North Carolina State CB Washington 20 52 Jamie Collins Southern Miss OLB New England from Minnesota 21 53 Margus Hunt Southern Methodist DE Cincinnati 22 54 Jamar Taylor Boise State CB Miami From Indianapolis 23 55 Vance McDonald Rice TE San Francisco from Green Bay 24 56 Arthur Brown Kansas State OLB Baltimore from Seattle 25 57 D.J. That doesn't even make sense. Mariota isn't going to be a project player for 10 years. 1-2 years tops, and then the Jets could have at long last found their franchise QB. Even an average QB is better and more important that stud at another position.
No Offense guys, but Mariota, is a bust waiting to happen...Am I the only one that watched the National Championship game? What happened when he was exposed to a defense? Mariota looked like shit against a good defense. OSU is not a great defense, they are better than average. OSU turned it over 4 times, and that game was still a blowout until late. Mariota, is Sanchez, without the balls. Trade the pick for a number two this year, and a one and a three next year, then tank next year, and draft jones. this year take D.Smith at the top of the second, Grab Jones, next year. JOners is the same size as Rapelisberger with athletic talent... just sayin.

i kinda just hope mariota is taken by the time he gets to us. if thats the case, we'll get a mighty fine defensive player or cooper and call it the right choice. if we had to pick between cooper/mariota....oh boy
